Reynolds High School students honor Ben Brooks, their award-winning music teacher, at his last concert
Ben Brooks hardly betrayed the bitter sweetness of the moment as he warmed up his jazz band for the year’s final concert last week. It was also the final concert of his career. Next month, the Reynolds High School band instructor of 34 years will retire. “It’s supposed to be about the kids,” Brooks, 63, says. “I was trying to keep things light.”

The Violin $85 The violin was first mentioned in a book in the sixteenth century. An abundant and diverse literature on the instrument has grown since then, and a complete general guide to these materials has not been produced in the modern era. The last, Edward Heron-Allen’s De Fidiculis Bibliographia, was published in1894. This book fills that void, organizing and annotating information on the violin from a variety of fields and sources. 3 Fervent Travelers $12.99 Time for Three — fiddlers Zach DePue and Nick Kendall and standup bassman Ranaan Meyer — bill themselves as a genre-stretching, boundary-demolishing trio with a sound all their own. They do have impressive chops and Meyer, the main composer, has skills that draw on a wide range of music, but they’re not the only band in the land that’s blending classical, bluegrass, Gypsy jazz, and swing in its music. Groups like Leftover Salmon and the Hot Club of Cowtown explore similar territory, maybe without the classical European touches. That said, there’s still plenty of remarkable playing on 3 Fervent Travelers. “Wyoming 307″ opens the disc in a dark, droning, classical mode, then slowly evolves into a bluegrass barnburner with DePue and Kendall trading off sizzling lead lines and seguing directly into “Forget About It,” which continues the bluegrass-style mayhem with the fiddlers slipping up into their ear-tweaking higher registers, each playing a different variation on the melody while Meyer adds rhythmic accents on his bass. “Don Don” opens with a musical quote from “Jailhouse Rock,” then Kendall and DePue play an extended jazzy, Grappelli-meets-Bob Wills interlude, dropping out to give Meyer time for a brief solo before their Bill Monroe-meets-Monk finale. The violin accents on “Philly Phunk” live up to the tune’s title, while the solos range throughout the blues, jazz, country, and new music spectrum with unpredictable shifts in time, tempo, and timbre. They close the album with a classically influenced arrangement of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” that accents the tune’s solemn tone, despite the rippling violin triplets that accent the second chorus. They close with a jazzy version of “Orange Blossom Special” that features Meyer’s impressive bass work setting up the dueling fiddles of DePue and Kendall, playing at lightning speed and dropping Arab and Gypsy jazz accents into the mix. ~ j. poet, Rovi |

A (w/ Bonus DVD) $24.98 Jethro Tull’s classic A album from 1980 is now digitally remastered and includes a bonus DVD called Slipstream which consists of a mixture of live footage from a 1980 concert in L.A. and studio promos of Sweet Dreams, Too Old To Rock ‘N’ Roll and The Hare That Lost It’s Spectacles. Originally destined as Anderson’s first solo album, A became a dramatically different Tull product with a new lineup (except Barre), minimal flute, and a lot of electronic keyboards and Eddie Jobson’s ( Roxy Music ) electronic violin. Not suprisingly, the album was a shock to many Tull fans and remains quite controversial to this day though it is often cited by critics as one of the band’s best works.Despite instrumentation differences, the general style maintains the surprisingly folkie feel of its album contemporaries. Yet, the album heralds Tull’s early 1980′s segway into electronic music and themes such as the Cold War and economic recession.This new release contains a remaster (with stereo sound) of the Slipstream video. The film mixes live footage of the A tour with various videos including the webmaster’s favourite, Sweet Dream, with Ian appearing as Aqualung and Dracula and apparently unintentional nods to various Tull songs and albums. |

A Practical Handbook $17.99 This is a superbly shot, edited, and recorded live DVD, from Portland, OR’s ornate Roseland Theater, November 4, 2005. Even missing the megawatt thrills of later Crane Wife material, this unedited concert — bolstered for homecoming triumph by violin/vocals from Petra Haden, a sharp three-piece horn section, and an encore cameo from Pac NW legend and onetime Young Fresh Fellow Scott McCaughey — shows why they are the best time going. Though the whole shebang is absorbing, those somehow still unimpressed or requiring revelation can skip to the final five epic selections. They’re not only a fabulous, elastic band with wonderful songs; they also spew spontaneous, madcap comedy, like an ever-updating theater troupe drawing big laughs to go with wildly spontaneous performances. As ever, you won’t know who to watch: Jenny Conley’s bedazzling grin/glee? Colin Meloy’s sly merrymaking? John Moen’s nutty clowning? Chris Funk’s wry bemusement? All of them falling over each other? And what a game audience! Watching 1400 people sway hither and thither, pogo, Cossack dance, scream, laugh, hoot, and clap is as pleasurable as the band, especially during the epic, awesome “Mariner’s Revenge Song.” The crowd’s feigned death/sleep then rise as the band kicks back in the finale of “The Chimbley Sweep” is a visual knockout. Finally, a pleasurable documentary Paris Before the War chronicles band origins and the unusual making of the Picaresque LP, as well as five videos (one outstanding, “16 Military Wives,” and two with truly striking animation), making Practical a joy for anyone who has never seen them or wants to again. ~ Jack Rabid, Rovi |

Abattoir Blues Tour [2CD/2DVD] $30.99 It’s got all the look of “deluxe” written on it, the thick, book-like black cover with an inset photo of frontman Nick Cave doing his flip to wig city dance — Bad Seeds fans don’t need much encouragement to rush out and pick up something by St. Nick and his motley crew of bent ministers of melody, and there’s good reason. This double-DVD/double-CD package assembled from the Abattoir Blues Tour in 2003 and 2004 is quite a thing. The 17 tracks that cover the CDs are taken from dates throughout the tour. Sound is wonderful — particularly with the new ambient, noisier aspect of the Bad Seeds put into place by Warren Ellis’ violin. Opening with “O Children” in Dusseldorf backed by a quartet of female backing singers and the sheer drama the Bad Seeds put into backing their boss’ baritone harangue, the Seeds are in prime form. The proof of this is underscored in the freaky-deaky Aussie funk blues of “Hiding All Away,” where Mick Harvey’s guitars sting and spark. And so it goes. The lion’s share of the material comes from the Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus double, but there are some choice moments from the back catalog as well as nuggets such as “Red Right Hand,” “The Ship Song,” “The Weeping Song,” and “Stagger Lee” rounding out disc one, and “God Is in the House” (which could have been left off and made this a single disc!), “Deanna,” and “Lay Me Low.”The DVDs contain a pair of shows. The first is live at the Brixton Academy in November of 2004, and the material is simply woven together so tightly that it’s hard to believe not every gesture is rehearsed. Cave engages his audience in front of a band so utterly in sync with one another they’ve become the complete evil twin version of the E Street Band. The material is obviously similar to the material on the CDs, but being one show, it flows better and there are some different track selections (on the second DVD anyway). There is, after all, a large palette of backlog for the Bad Seeds to draw from … |

Billy Jack $14.99 Fine-tuning the blend of country and coffeehouse Americana that filled their 2008 debut, honeyhoney present themselves as a leaner, twangier band on this pitch-perfect follow-up. Trading licks on the banjo, acoustic guitar, and violin, bandmates Suzanne Santo and Benjamin Jaffe set themselves up as a more commercial Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, keeping the tempos slightly quicker and replacing Welch’s backwoods drawl with Santo’s husky, slow-smoked croon. She’s clearly the focal point here, but Jaffe is the first mate who keeps the ship afloat, whether he’s backing up his partner with vocal harmonies — even taking the lead for a few moments on “Old School Friends” — or claiming the songwriting credits for tunes like “Angel of Death,” a vintage-sounding country ballad that recalls Hank Williams. If 2008′s First Rodeo pointed the band in multiple directions — acoustic folk one moment, ? 60s revivalist pop the next — then Billy Jack narrows the focus and keeps its sights set on the south, resulting in a rootsy track list that’s far more cohesive than honeyhoney’s debut. The highlights are scattered throughout: “Ohio” builds up to a tent revival chorus; “Don’t Know How” tugs on the heartstrings with an archetypal AM Radio melody, and “I Don’t Mind” finds the two bandmates harmonizing like a co-ed Everly Brothers. Released by Lost Highway — a label with far more country clout than Ironworks, the duo’s previous home — Billy Jack doesn’t feel like a reboot as much as a clarification, as it brings to light the nostalgic, rootsy charm that First Rodeo only hinted at. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi |
