OP 98: Catalogue of Punic Stelae in the British Mu $27 This catalogue discusses some aspects of Carthaginian or ‘Punic’ culture as shown by the inscribed and carved stones, or stelae, in the Museum’s collections. These were acquired during the 19th century in North Africa, and come mainly from Tunisia. The stelae provide a window on the religion and language of the Carthaginians, both of which are still imperfectly understood. They date from between the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD, and in the catalogue they are divided into Punic and Neo-Punic, according to whether they pre- or post-date the Roman sack of Carthage in 146 BC. The catalogue describes each stela, giving transcriptions and translations of the Punic and neo-Punic inscriptions, plus measurements and bibliographical references. Every stela is photographic |

Reading Harry Potter $70 J. K. Rowling achieved astounding commercial success with her series of novels about Harry Potter, the boy-wizard who finds out about his magical powers on the morning of his eleventh birthday. The books' incredible popularity, and the subsequent likelihood that they are among this generation's most formative narratives, call for critical exploration and study to interpret the works' inherent tropes and themes. The essays in this collection assume that Rowling's works should not be relegated to the categories of pulp fiction or children's trends, which would deny their certain influence on the intellectual, emotional, and psychosocial development of today's children. The variety of contributions allows for a range of approaches and interpretive methods in exploring the novels, and reveals the deeper meanings and attitudes towards justice, education, race, foreign cultures, socioeconomic class, and gender. Following an introductory discussion of the Harry Potter phenomenon are essays considering the psychological and social-developmental experiences of children as mirrored in Rowling's novels. Next, the works' literary and historical contexts are examined, including the European fairy tale tradition, the British abolitionist movement, and the public-school story genre. A third section focuses on the social values underlying the Potter series and on issues such as morality, the rule of law, and constructions of bravery. |

Cambridge and Clare by Godwin, Harry [Paperback] $65.33 Sir Harry Godwin looks back over sixty years of life at Clare College, the University of Cambridge and its very distinguished school of Botany. He came to Clare in 1919 as an undergraduate, became an early research student and was a Fellow from 1925. A botanist, he was virtual founder of the science of Quaternary Research in England, using the technique of pollen analysis to show the age of plant remains and their distribution, especially in the Fens and peat bogs of Eastern England. His History of the British Flora (CUP 1956) is a classic. Sir Harry contemplates his threefold life, as a deeply loyal college man, as a Cambridge researcher and professor, as a member of the wider scientific world. He remembers the longpast Cambridge of small college societies, still in touch with the Victorian world, and tells of its characters and conventions. He explains his own scientific work in terms that any reader can understand. The Oxus Treasure $5 The Oxus Treasure is a lively and accessible exploration of the individual objects that make up this beautiful collection of treasures from the Achaemenid era, and how they were eventually discovered. In May 1880 Captain F.C. Burton, a British political officer in Afghanistan, rescued a group of merchants who had been captured by bandits while travelling between Kabul and Peshawar. With them was a rich and impressive collection of gold and silver objects dating back to the fifth and fourth centuries BC. From the banks of the River Oxus, the entire hoard was, in due course, bequeathed to the British Museum. Consisting of around 170 objects, including vessels, a gold scabbard, armlets, coins and much more, the collection is an example of ancient goldsmithery at its very best. With exciting and descriptive insight placing the treasure into historical and cultural context, this book takes a closer look at the individual wonders that make up the Oxus Treasure, one of the British Museums most celebrated and cherished collections. The author John Curtis is Keeper of the Department of Middle East at the British Museum. Mainly interested in archaeology and history of Iraq and Iran circa 1000-330 BC, John has directed a number of excavations on behalf of the British Museum. John has authored several books, including Forgotten Empire: The World of Ancient Persia, with Nigel Tallis (British Museum Press, 2005). |

William Harry by Seward, Ingrid [Paperback] $27.27 William Harry is the first authoritative portrait of the two young princes who are directly in line to the British throne. Ingrid Seward, the bestselling author of The Queen Di, draws from her personal conversations with Prince Charles and Princess Diana, as well as a wide range of intimate contacts, to give us the closest look yet at the lives of the men who would be king. William, who is second in line to the throne, turns twentyone this year. He has conquered his natural reticence and is aware he carries the future of the royal family on his shoulders. Harry, his younger brother, is trying to live up to expectations while attempting to control his wild side. Seward takes a frank look at the problems the two boys faced while growing up in the spotlight of royalty. She reveals for the first time how they reacted to the breakup of their parents marriage and their mothers tragic death, as well as how they dealt with Dianas often terrifying celebrity in life. Seward answers the most compelling questions: What really happened after Diana died? How did Charles rise out of the morass of indecision to take responsibility for his sons, and how did he reclaim the affection of his two teenage boys? How did they feel about Camilla Parker Bowles, the other woman in Charless life whom Diana detested? What is their relationship with each other and with the rest of the Royal Family? And how have they learned to deal with being royal in an age when the old certainties are gone? Insightful and engaging, William Harry follows the lives of two remarkable young men, who, like Diana, have captivated the world and now personify the future of the British monarchy. Author: Seward, Ingrid Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 352 Publication Date: 2011/04/18 Language: English Dimensions: 9.02 x 5.98 x 0.72 inches |

William and Harry: Behind the Palace Walls $17.99 William and Harry is a fascinating insight into the lives and loves of two extraordinary young men who have captured not only the hearts and minds of not only the British public, but those the world over. This is the definitive book about the princes, bringing their story right up to date. It is the tale of two brothers who have carried the legacy of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, into the twenty-first century and on whom the future of the House of Windsor largely depends. Drawing on her unique set of contacts Katie Nicholl recounts the royal brothers’ extraordinary lives and reveals William and Harry’s real characters as they become front-line soldiers and modern princes. Through her network of sources, some of which have agreed to speak for the very first time, Katie tells the story of one of Prince William’s earliest romances, and his struggle with his destiny as a future King of England.   As a royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton seems more probable, Katie has spoken to a wealth of contacts close to the couple who reveal how their love affair really started at St Andrews, the hurdles the pair overcame and the challenges they still face. She recounts the story of Harry’s time at Eton, his relationship with Chelsy Davy, and his three months he spent on the front line in Afghanistan. She analyses William and Harry’s complex relationship with their father, and the woman who will one day become Queen Camilla. She talks to their friends, contemporaries and confidants to paint a unique and revealing portrait of the two most famous brothers in the world. |

RP 181: Cosmetic Sets of Late Iron Age and Roman Britain $30 Cosmetic Sets of Late Iron Age and Roman Britain is the first comprehensive research publication of this insular British type intimately associated with bodily appearance and identity. Cosmetic sets are small two-piece bronze toilet implements for the preparation of mineral powders, probably colourings for the eyelids and face. Found almost exclusively in Britain, they range in date from the Late Iron Age to the 4th century. An association with fertitlity is indicated by the crescent shape, by overtly phallic imagery and by the twinning of male and female animal heads. Ralph Jackson’s research led to proper recognition of the type, and subsequently the British Museum has built up the largest single collection (160 examples). This catalogue includes not only the British Museum examples but also those in other museums and private collections throughout Britain. It focuses on typology and function but also considers manufacture, including the results of scientific analysis, followed by full discussions of decoration, context, distribution and dating. |
