Century Silk

Century Silk
When was the Silk Road established?

What year and/or century?
Can even be like in the ____hundreds, don’t need and EXACT date, but would like to know the gist of it.
Please feel free to answer even if someone else already has. Various answers help me out so I can be sure! Thanks:)

The exact date of the Silk Road’s establishment cannot be perfectly pinpointed, but the Silk Road is believed to have started in the 2 BC century, though ironically did not start out as a trade route for silk (it wasn’t named the “Silk Road” until around the 17th century). The road extended from China to as far as Southern Europe, and reached into Arabia, Egypt, Somalia, Persia, India, and Java.

Men of Silk

Men of Silk

$35

Hasidism, a kabbalah-inspired movement founded by Israel Ba'al Shem Tov (c1700-1760), transformed Jewish communities across Eastern and East Central Europe. In Men of Silk, Glenn Dynner draws upon newly discovered Polish archival material and neglected Hebrew testimonies to illuminate Hasidism's dramatic ascendancy in the region of Central Poland during the early nineteenth century. Dynner presents Hasidism as a socioreligious phenomenon that was shaped in crucial ways by its Polish context. His social historical analysis dispels prevailing romantic notions about Hasidism. Despite their folksy image, the movement's charismatic leaders are revealed as astute populists who proved remarkably adept at securing elite patronage, neutralizing powerful opponents, and methodically co-opting Jewish institutions. The book also reveals the full spectrum of Hasidic devotees, from humble shtetl dwellers to influential Warsaw entrepreneurs.

Foreign Devils on the Silk Road

Foreign Devils on the Silk Road

$11.81

The Silk Road, which linked imperial Rome and distant China, was once the greatest thoroughfare on earth. Along it travelled precious cargoes of silk, gold and ivory, as well as revolutionary new ideas. Its oasis towns blossomed into thriving centres of Buddhist art and learning. In time it began to decline. The traffic slowed, the merchants left and finally its towns vanished beneath the desert sands to be forgotten for a thousand years. But legends grew up of lost cities filled with treasures and guarded by demons. In the early years of the last century foreign explorers began to investigate these legends, and very soon an international race began for the art treasures of the Silk Road. Huge wall paintings, sculptures and priceless manuscripts were carried away, literally by the ton, and are today scattered through the museums of a dozen countries. Peter Hopkirk tells the story of the intrepid men who, at great personal risk, led these long-range archaeological raids, incurring the undying wrath of the Chinese.

The Silk Road in World History

The Silk Road in World History

$52.5

The Silk Road was the contemporary name for a complex of ancient trade routes linking East Asia with Central Asia, South Asia, and the Mediterranean world. This network of exchange emerged along the borders between agricultural China and the steppe nomads during the Han Dynasty (206BCE-220CE), in consequence of the inter-dependence and the conflicts of these two distinctive societies. In their quest for horses, fragrances, spices, gems, glassware, and other exotics from the lands to their west, the Han Empire extended its dominion over the oases around the Takla Makan Desert and sent silk all the way to the Mediterranean, either through the land routes leading to the caravan city of Palmyra in Syria desert, or by way of northwest India, the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea, landing at Alexandria. The Silk Road survived the turmoil of the demise of the Han and Roman Empires, reached its golden age during the early middle age, when the Byzantine Empire and the Tang Empire became centers of silk culture and established the models for high culture of the Eurasian world. The coming of Islam extended silk culture to an even larger area and paved the way for an expanded market for textiles and other commodities. By the 11th century, however, the Silk Road was in decline because of intense competition from the sea routes of the Indian Ocean. Using supply and demand as the framework for analyzing the formation and development of the Silk Road, the book examines the dynamics of the interactions of the nomadic pastoralists with sedentary agriculturalists, and the spread of new ideas, religions, and values into the world of commerce, thus illustrating the cultural forces underlying material transactions. This effort at tracing the interconnections of the diverse participants in the transcontinental Silk Road exchange will demonstrate that the world had been linked through economic and ideological forces long before the modern era.

Aurel Stein on the Silk Road

Aurel Stein on the Silk Road

$18.99

In 1900 a secret sealed-up cave was discovered by a Daoist priest among the many caves dotting the cliff face at Dunhuang, an oasis town on the Silk Road. Its entrance had been plastered over and disguised but, when opened, it was revealed to be crammed with ancient Buddhist manuscripts, printed documents and paintings. The sheer volume and exceptional condition of the finds, preserved in the desert climate since the early 11th century, excited international archaeological and popular interest. In 1907, Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862-1942), a Hungarian-born explorer employed by the British in India, was the first foreigner to gain access to the secret cave archive at Dunhuang. His expeditions, published in full in the 1920s, made him a celebrity whose intrepid exploits helped to reveal the long-forgotten history and exotic geography of the Silk Road.

Golden-Silk Smoke

$49.95

From the long-stemmed pipe to snuff, the water pipe, hand-rolled cigarettes, and finally, manufactured cigarettes, the history of tobacco in China is the fascinating story of a commodity that became a hallmark of modern mass consumerism. Carol Benedict follows the spread of Chinese tobacco use from the sixteenth century, when it was introduced to China from the New World, through the development of commercialized tobacco cultivation, and to the present day. Along the way, she analyzes the factors that have shaped China’s highly gendered tobacco cultures, and shows how they have evolved within a broad, comparative world-historical framework. Drawing from a wealth of historical sourcesgazetteers, literati jottings ( biji ), Chinese materia medica, Qing poetry, modern short stories, late Qing and early Republican newspapers, travel memoirs, social surveys, advertisements, and more Golden-Silk Smoke not only uncovers the long and dynamic history of tobacco in China but also sheds new light on global histories of fashion and consumption.

The floral pattern of this beautiful silk scarf has been inspired by a wallpaper design by the 19th century writer and designer William Morris. William Morris was one of the most influential figures of the British Victorian era, and in 1861 founded the interior design firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner, & Co. with other leading artistic figures, such as Edward Burne-Jones. Calling themselves “fine art workmen”, they deliberately broke down the modern barrier between fine and decorative art, and established an equivalent to the cooperative guilds of the Middle Ages. Morris & Co. designed murals, embroidery, stained glass, and tiles, often with nature motifs such as this floral pattern.

Royal Gold Cup silk scarf

Royal Gold Cup silk scarf

$35

Design inspired by the Royal Gold Cup, one of the British Museums most precious objects in the medieval collections. The cup is made from solid gold and decorated with translucent enamels which depict scenes of the martyrdom of St. Agnes, who refused the advances of the pagan Procopius and was subsequently imprisoned. Although they were reconciled after Agnes miraculously raised Procopius from the dead. The story decorates the surfaces of the Royal Gold Cup, commissioned by the French prince, Jean duc de Berry between about 1370-80, as a gift to Charles V of France. It was passed down through royal hands until it disappeared into obscurity in 17th century Spain. During the Hundred Years War, it came into possession of John, Duke of Bedford, and in the 16th century it was recorded in the household of Henry VIII. It remained in English Royal hands until James I presented it to the Spanish ambassador who negotiated peace between Spain and England in 1604.

 Birds Every Child Should Know

Birds Every Child Should Know

$13.76

Originally published in 1907, Birds Every Child Should Know is a collection of storylike descriptions of more than one hundred birds commonly found in the United States. Neltje Blanchan’s detailed descriptions of birds — their physical attributes, calls, nesting and mating habits, and other behaviors — are nothing less than enchanting, and some read almost like fairy tales. Take for instance the mockingbird’s call: when the moonlight sheds a silvery radiance about every sleeping creature, the mockingbird sings to his mate such delicious music as only the European nightingale can rival. Perhaps the stillness of the hour, the beauty and fragrance of the place where the singer is hidden among the orange blossoms or magnolia, increase the magic of his almost pathetically sweet voice; but surely there is no lovelier sound in nature on this side of the sea.or the yellow warbler’s nest: an exquisite little cradle of silvery plant fiber, usually shreds of milkweed stalk, grass, leaves, and caterpillar’s silk, neatly lined with hair, feathers, and downy felt of fern fronds.Blanchan includes folk history (how Native Americans and southern slaves thwarted mosquitoes by hanging gourds to attract purple martins) as well as common threats to birds that foreshadow current dangers to avian life (the toll taken on songbirds by lighthouses and electric towers). Such informative details, along with the author’s disarming enthusiasm for her subject, will charm adult bird-watchers as well as children.Cornelia Mutel’s informative foreword places Blanchan’s writing in the historical context of a turn-of-the-century environmental reawakening and burgeoning activism and research by women onbehalf of dwindling bird populations.

Brocaded Paper Bavarian Wild Flower Ultra Lined

$145.31

Gold leaf blocking on leather and parchment had been practiced in Europe since the early 16th century. From 1698 onwards this technique was applied to paper. What became known as brocaded paper was produced in a relief printing process — a design cut in relief using a number of different metalworking tools from a sheet of copper or brass at least 6mm thick. The repertoire of shapes used to decorate brocaded paper, among them ribbons, tendrils, arabesques and floral blossoms, closely echo the patterns adorning the leather wall coverings and silk damask of the time. Towards the end of the 18th and in the 19th century the predominant motifs were leaves with figurative patterns, laid out like a picture sheet.& nbsp; This journal’s cover portrays& nbsp; a beautiful example of this sumptuous variety of coloured paper housed in Augsburg, Nuremberg and F u rth in Germany.
