Century Silks

How did Leek in Staffordshire become a centre for the silk industry in England ?
I have been researching a cousin’s family history and find that whole families were involved in producing silk thread in Leek in the 19th century. It seems odd since silk would most likely be imported and therefore subsequent working would have been close to the port of entry.
Interesting question, if you want to do further research try Macclesfield which was a bigger centre of the silk industry, presumably not all that far away from Leek, they have the major silk museum in the UK and lots of information you might be able to apply to Leek, look as well to see if Leek was on one of the canals which would answer your question about source.
Btw, you’d do better with this question in History or Genealogy under Arts and Humanities rather than Local Business which tends to be contemporary!!!!

The three upper drawers have bold curved moldings, while the two lower larger drawers are plain. Their plainness is offset by the carved side winged spandrels. The front leg extenders are simple, as are the legs. Brass pulls on each drawer. This cabinet would work nicely as a dining room… |

Silks $4.58 Julian Trent you have been found guilty by this court of perpetrating a violent and unprovoked attack on an innocent family including a charge of attempted murder. You have shown little or no remorse for your actions and I consider you a danger to society. When defence barrister Geoffrey Mason hears the judges verdict he quietly hopes that a long and arduous custodial sentence will be handed down to his arrogant young client. That Julian Trent only receives eight years seems all too lenient. Little does Mason expect that hell be looking Trent in the eyes again much sooner than hed ever imagined. Setting aside his barristers wig Mason heads to Sandown to don his racing silks. An amateur jockey his true passion is to be found in the saddle on a Thoroughbred pounding the turf in the heat of a steeplechase. But when a fellow rider is brutally murdered a pitchfork driven through his chest Masons racing life soon becomes all too close to his working life. The prime suspect is one of their brethren champion jockey Steve Mitchell; the evidence is overwhelming. Mason is reluctant to heed Mitchells pleas for legal advice but soon he finds himself at the centre of a sinister web of threat and intimidation. Mason is left fighting a battle of right and wrong and more immediately a battle of life and death his own. ?Julian Trent you have been found guilty by this court of perpetrating a violent and unprovoked attack on an innocent family including a charge of attempted murder. Century Assembly $74.88 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Century Assembly (comitia centuriata or Army Assembly ) of the Roman Republic was the democratic assembly of Roman soldiers. During the years of the Roman Republic, citizens were organized on the basis of Centuries for military purposes. The Centuries gathered into the Century Assembly for legislative, electoral, and judicial purposes. The majority of votes in any Century decided how that Century voted. Each Century received one vote, regardless of how many electors each Century held. Once a majority of Centuries voted in the same way on a given measure, the voting ended, and the matter was decided. Only the Century Assembly could declare war or elect the highestranking Roman Magistrates: Consuls, Praetors and Censors. English Trader, Indian Maid $26.51 On March 13, 1711, an article appeared in The Spectator about Thomas Inkle, a young and aspiring English trader cast ashore in the Americas, who is saved from violent death by Yarico, a beautiful Indian maiden. When he and Yarico become lovers, Inkle promises to clothe her in silks and transport her in carriages when he returns with her to England. Some months later, they are picked up after Yarico succeeds in signaling a passing English ship. But upon reaching Barbados, Inkle immediately sells Yarico into slavery — raising the price he demands when he learns that Yarico is pregnant with his child.Based on a real life account in Richard Ligon’s History of Barbados published half a century earlier, the Spectator story caused a sensation as debate intensified over slavery in the British colonies — and it would be told and retold for decades as perhaps the most compelling folk epic of its age. In English Trader, Indian Maid, Frank Felsenstein has assembled the main English versions of this once-famous story, including a newly rediscovered poetical epistle by Charles James Fox, one of the leading parliamentary promoters of the cause of abolition. As well as George Colman the Younger’s still vibrant comic opera — considered by some the earliest English social problem play — the book contains tantalizing retellings from the Caribbean and from America, where the story has close affinities with the tale of Pocahontas. |

Fabulous Orients $64.52 Narrative moves. Stories migrate from one culture to another, over vast distances sometimes, but their path is often difficult to trace and obscured by time. Fabulous Orients looks at the traffic of narrative between Orient and Occident in the eighteenth century, and challenges the assumption that has dominated since the publication of Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) that such traffic is always one-way. Eighteenth-century readers in the West came to draw their mental maps of oriental territories and distinctions between them from their experience of reading tales from the Orient. In this proto-colonial period the English encounter with the East was largely mediated through the consumption of material goods such as silks, indigo, muslin, spices, or jewels, imported from the East, together with the more moral traffic of narratives about the East, both imaginary and ethnographic. Through analyses of fictional representations (including travelers’ accounts, letter narratives such as Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy, and popular sequences of tales such as the Arabian Nights Entertainments) of four oriental territories (Persia, Turkey, China and India), Ros Ballaster demonstrates the ways in which the East came to be understood as a source of story, a territory of fable and narrative. Fabulous Orients is structured according to territory rather than genre. Each section opens by re-narrating an oriental story in which a feminine character serves to figure western desire for the territory she represents: the courtesan queen of the Ottoman seraglio Roxolana; the riddling Chinese princess Turandocte; and the illusory sati of India, Canzade. The book goes on to explore the range of fabulouswritings relating to each territory in order to illustrate how certain narrative tropes can come to dominate its representation: the conflict between the male look and female speech staged in the seraglio in the case of Turkey and Persia, the inauthenticity and/or dullness associated wit |

Silver Lies $12.47 As 1879 draws to a close, this Rocky Mountain boomtown has infected the world with silver fever. It’s not much different than the dot.com mania or the corporate scams that heat up over a century later. Unfortunately for Joe Rose, a precious-metals assayer, death stakes its own claim. Joe’s body is found trampled into the muck behind Inez Stannert’s saloon. Inez already had much more to deal with than pouring shots of Taos Lightning and cleaning up a corpse. A lady educated on the East Coast, she has a past that doesn’t bear close scrutiny, including her elopement with a gambling man who has recently disappeared. Most townsfolk, including Inez’s business partner, Abe Jackson, dismiss Joe’s death as an accident. Death, after all, is no stranger in Leadville. But Inez wonders: Why was this loving husband and father carrying a brass token good for one free screw at the parlor house of Denver madam Mattie Silks? When Joe’s widow Emma asks Inez to settle Joe’s affairs, almost against her will, Inez uncovers skewed assays, bogus greenbacks, and blackmail. Lies and secrets run deep in Colorado, secrets more likely to lead to a hanging than to today’s congressional hearings or country-club prisons for the crooked and the greedy. Then again, maybe Joe’s murder was purely personal…. |

The Silk Road $28.95 The Silk Road, a series of ancient trade routes stretching across Central Asia to Europe, evokes exotic images of camel trains laden with bales of fine Chinese silk, spices, and perfume, of desert oases surrounded by snow-capped mountains, of bustling markets thronging with travellers buying and selling grapes, coriander, Baltic amber, and Mediterranean coral. Along this route, silks were sent from China to ancient Rome; princesses were dispatched in marriage alliances across the deserts; bandits and thieves launched attacks throughout history. Covering more than 5,000 years, this book, lavishly illustrated with photographs, manuscripts, and paintings from the collections of the British Library and other museums worldwide, presents an overall picture of the history and cultures of the Silk Road. It also contains many previously unpublished photographs by the great explorers Stein, Hedin, and Mannerheim. More than just a trade route, the Silk Road witnessed the movement of cultural influences. Frances Wood traces the story of the civilizations and ideas that flourished and moved along its vast geographical expanse. Indian Buddhism was carried into China on the Silk Road, initiating a long history of pilgrimages along the lonely desert routes; Manichaeism, Nestorian Christianity, and Islam also made their way eastwards along its route. The nineteenth century saw a new interest in Central Asia and the Silk Road, as Russia and Britain vied for power on the frontiers of Afghanistan. A new breed of explorer, part archaeologist, part cartographer, part spy, was seen on the Silk Road, while some of the ancient cities, long buried in sand-blown dunes, began to give up their secrets. This book brings the history of the Silk Road alive–from its beginnings to the present day, revealing a rich history still in the making. |

The Unknown Matisse $29.95 Henri Matisse is one of the masters of twentieth-century art and a household word to millions of people who find joy and meaning in his light-filled, colorful images–yet, despite all the books devoted to his work, the man himself has remained a mystery. Now, in the hands of the superb biographer Hilary Spurling, the unknown Matisse becomes visible at last. Matisse was born into a family of shopkeepers in 1869, in a gloomy textile town in the north of France. His environment was brightened only by the sumptuous fabrics produced by the local weavers–magnificent brocades and silks that offered Matisse his first vision of light and color, and which later became a familiar motif in his paintings. He did not find his artistic vocation until after leaving school, when he struggled for years with his father, who wanted him to take over the family seed-store. Escaping to Paris, where he was scorned by the French art establishment, Matisse lived for fifteen years in great poverty–an ordeal he shared with other young artists and with Camille Joblaud, the mother of his daughter, Marguerite. But Matisse never gave up. Painting by painting, he struggled toward the revelation that beckoned to him, learning about color, light, and form from such mentors as Signac, Pissarro, and the Australian painter John Peter Russell, who ruled his own art colony on an island off the coast of Brittany. In 1898, after a dramatic parting from Joblaud, Matisse met and married Amelie Parayre, who became his staunchest ally. She and their two sons, Jean and Pierre, formed with Marguerite his indispensable intimate circle. From the first day of his wedding trip to Ajaccio in Corsica, Matisse realized that hehad found his spiritual home: the south, with its heat, color, and clear light. For years he worked unceasingly toward the style by which we know him now. But in 1902, just as he was on the point of achieving his goals as a painter, he suddenly left Paris with his family for the homet |

Threads of Colour $15.95 Used – Textiles define civilisations as much as architecture, religion or language. From the morning of time, man has judged his fellow man by the fabrics he uses to dress himself and his home. Chinese silks, English flannel, Scots tartans, Hawaiian shirts, Indian saris all immediately identify a time and a place. In 4th century Imperial Rome, only the Emperor himself could wear purple and the manufacture of purple outside the royal dye works was a capital crime. Today we enjoy easy access to hu |

Turkish Delights $66.03 Liotard’s fine portraits of Westerners in Turkish dress, Carpaccio’s turbaned figures, and the coveted Turkey carpets that appear in paintings by Lotto and Holbein bear witness to a deep Western fascination with all things Ottoman. It is this cultural influence, spanning five hundred years — from the fall of Constantinople through to the twentieth century — that unites the wealth of paintings, drawings, photography, and decorative objects in this sumptuously illustrated book. The result is a visual feast of Turkish delights, from the exotic allure of the harem and Turkish baths to Ottoman-inspired Western interiors and pavilions; from paintings of Europeans in Turkish costume to carpets, silks, tulips, turbans, Iznik tiles, coffee, tobacco, and croissants. The delightfully informative text explains how Turkey, the gateway to the East, became a fountain of inspiration for so many artistic and cultural fields — painting, ceramics, textiles, interiors, fashion — in the West. Today the many fruits of this cultural meeting, enticingly displayed in this book, will engage a fresh audience with the decorative possibilities of the ravishing colors, motifs, and furnishings of traditional Turkey. |
