Changing Silk

did they change the recipe of silk soymilk?
the plain one?
taste a little different to me.
yes, they changed it and i for one am mucho upset about it. it tastes like vanilla soymilk now. i actually dumped a half gallon out thinking it went bad before i realized it. didn’t notice the new “our best taste ever” exclamation around the opening. i cannot get used to this new taste and will probably switch brands. sucks cuz i’ve been drinking silk for years.

Changing Teachers, Changing Times $140 The rules of the world are changing. It is time for the rules of teaching and teachers' work to change with them. This is the challenge which Andy Hargreaves sets out in his book on teachers' work and culture in the postmodern world. Drawing on his current research with teachers at all levels, Hargreaves shows through their own vivid words what teaching is really like, how it is already changing, and why. He argues that the structures and cultures of teaching need to change even more if teachers are not to be trapped by guilt, pressed by time and overburdened by decisions imposed upon them. Provocative yet practical, this book is written for teachers and those who work with teachers, and for researchers who want to understand teaching better in the postmodern age. All who are interested in teachers and teaching can ill afford to ignore this book. Professor Philip W. Jackson, University of Chicago Hargreaves' description of the collapse of certainty, the crisis of moral purpose and the concomitant struggle to gain clarity in the classroom is brilliant! Professor Ann Lieberman, Columbia University A tour de force of linking the macroworld of society with the microworld of everyday teaching. Nobody identifies the deep dilemmas of teaching in the postmodern age better than Andy Hargreaves…A must-read for those who want to understand and do something about the future of teaching. Michael Fullan, University of Toronto There are few contemporary educational thinkers to equal Hargreaves' ability to write in a clear and readable style about complex matters which defy simplistic solutions. Professor John Elliot, University of East Anglia Andy Hargreaves is one of the most original thinkers and gifted researchers of this generation of educators…His analysis of society in uneasy transition is convincing, and his deeply felt care and critical respect for teachers and their work undeniable. Brian J. Caldwell, President of the Australian Council of Educational Administration This is a fascinating social analysis of the changing nature of teaching and teachers' work in the new postmodern world. Hargreaves does an excellent job of defining and delineating these new forces and locating them within a critical tradition. Professor Ivor Goodson, University of Western Ontario |

Changing Media, Changing China $19.95 Thirty years ago, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) made a fateful decision: to allow newspapers, magazines, television, and radio stations to compete in the marketplace instead of being financed exclusively by the government. The political and social implications of that decision are still unfolding as the Chinese government, media, and public adapt to the new information environment. Edited by Susan Shirk, one of America's leading experts on contemporary China, this collection of essays brings together a who's who of experts–Chinese and American–writing about all aspects of the changing media landscape in China. In detailed case studies, the authors describe how the media is reshaping itself from a propaganda mouthpiece into an agent of watchdog journalism, how politicians are reacting to increased scrutiny from the media, and how television, newspapers, magazines, and Web-based news sites navigate the cross-currents between the open marketplace and the CCP censors. China has over 360 million Internet users, more than any other country, and an astounding 162 million bloggers. The growth of Internet access has dramatically increased the information available, the variety and timeliness of the news, and its national and international reach. But China is still far from having a free press. As of 2008, the international NGO Freedom House ranked China 181 worst out of 195 countries in terms of press restrictions, and Chinese journalists have been aptly described as "dancing in shackles." The recent controversy over China's censorship of Google highlights the CCP's deep ambivalence toward information freedom. Covering everything from the rise of business media and online public opinion polling to environmental journalism and the effect of media on foreign policy, Changing Media, Changing China reveals how the most populous nation on the planet is reacting to demands for real news. |

Changing Education $189 This book responds to the growing unease of educators and non-educators alike about the inadequacy of most current educational systems and programs to meet sufficiently the demands of fast changing societies. These systems and programs evolved and were developed in and for societies that have long been transformed, and yet no parallel transformation has taken place in the education systems they spawned. In the last twenty years or so, other sectors of society, such as transportation and communications systems, have radically changed the way they operate, but education has remained essentially the same. There is no doubt: education needs to change. To those ready to accept this challenge, this book represents a welcome guide. Unlike most books on educational policy, this volume does not focus on improving existing educational systems but on changing them altogether. Its focus is not on doing things better, but on doing better things; not on doing things right, but on doing the right things to prepare students for a fast changing interdependent world. |

Changing Fashion $75.4 Changing trends in fashion have always reflected large-scale social and cultural changes. Ideal for the undergraduate student of fashion and cultural studies, the book has a wide range of contemporary and historical case material which provides practical examples of trend analysis and change, from the art deco textile designs of Sonia Delaunay to the chameleonic shifts in Bob Dylan’s appearance over time. Key issues in fashion and identity, such as race, gender and consumption are examined from different disciplinary angles to provide a critical overview of the field. Changing Fashion provides a concise guide to the main theories across disciplines that explain how and why media, clothing styles, and cultural practices fall in and out of fashion. |

Body, Subject and Power in China $27.1 For the first time, this volume brings to the study of China the theoretical concerns and methods of contemporary critical cultural studies. Written by historians, art historians, anthropologists, and literary critics who came of age after the People’s Republic resumed scholarly ties with the United States, these essays yield valuable new insights not only for China studies but also, by extension, for non-Asian cultural criticism. Contributors investigate problems of bodiliness, engendered subjectivities, and discourses of power through a variety of sources that include written texts, paintings, buildings, interviews, and observations. Taken together, the essays show that bodies in China have been classified, represented, discussed, ritualized, gendered, and eroticized in ways as rich and multiple as those described in critical histories of the West. Silk robes, rocks, winds, gestures of bowing, yin yang hierarchies, and cross-dressing have helped create experiences of the body specific to Chinese historical life. By pointing to multiple examples of reimagining subjectivity and renegotiating power, the essays encourage scholars to avoid making broad generalizations about China and to rethink traditional notions of power, subject, and bodiliness in light of actual Chinese practices. Body, Subject, and Power in China is at once an example of the changing face of China studies and a work of importance to the entire discipline of cultural studies. |

Palmyra and Its Empire $202.98 In the twilight of the third century C.E., the unity of the Western world was threatened by financial crisis, invasion, and plague. The Syrian city Palmyra had long protected Rome against Persian invasion, but under its queen Zenobia, Palmyra broke away from Roman hegemony. The Roman Empire had never been closer to disintegration, nor had it suffered so much before at the hands of a woman. This volume is the first comprehensive historical treatment in any language of Roman Syria, the revolt of Zenobia, and the city of Palmyra. Drawing on discoveries in archaeology, the history of the Silk Road, numismatics, and Roman and Persian history, Richard Stoneman has assembled a rich collage of knowledge about this intriguing period. As he tells the story of this major revolt and its leader, the author surveys the history of the spice trade in antiquity, the religious ferment of third- century Syria, early modern travelers to Palmyra, and in particular Zenobia’s changing image through the ages. The lucid text and numerous illustrations will attract all who are intrigued by the third- century Roman Empire and its frontiers, by pre-Islamic Arab culture, by Roman Syria and Palmyra itself, and by the fascinating Queen Zenobia. . . . an excellent synthesis of current knowledge and a sound introduction to the third cen-tury, especially in the East. . . . –Journal of Military History . . . Stoneman provides an excellent and readable introduction to what is known about Palmyra, and particularly the astonishing period in the mid-third century A.D. . . . He marshalls recent reinterpretations of the politics of the eastern frontier by both historians and archaeologists, as well as theinspiration of his own visits to Syria, to underline Palmyra’s unique commercial position and the ability over the centuries of Roman rule of its ethnically and religiously highly heterogeneous ruling class to exploit the caravan trade from East and South Asia to their economic and pol |

The Art of Gandhara in the Metropolitan Museum of Art $19.97 Gandhara was an ancient region of Pakistan that controlled a series of key passes for Silk Road trade among India, China, and Mediterranean lands. This steady commerce provided the financial foundation for the sustained patronage of luxury goods as well as Buddhist monastic sites and devotional sculpture. Drawing on the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this book traces the complex and changing artistic tradition of Gandhara, from Northwest Pakistan and Eastern Afghanistan in the 2nd century BC until the 8th century. This book also explores early urban material, international trade, and the emergence and development of Buddhist art in the region, specifically addressing the relic tradition, narrative art, and iconic representations of Buddhas and bodhisattvas. The latest period of production is characterized by the fabrication of monumental imagery as well as the clay and stucco production of Afghanistan. |

The Making of a Japanese Periphery, 1750-1920 $63.32 Contending that Japan’s industrial and imperial revolutions were also geographical revolutions, Karen Wigen’s interdisciplinary study analyzes the changing spatial order of the countryside in early modern Japan. Her focus, the Ina Valley, served as a gateway to the mountainous interior of central Japan. Using methods drawn from historical geography and economic development, Wigen maps the valley’s changes–from a region of small settlements linked in an autonomous economic zone, to its transformation into a peripheral part of the global silk trade, dependent on the state. Yet the processes that brought these changes–industrial growth and political centralization–were crucial to Japan’s rise to imperial power. Wigen’s elucidation of this makes her book compelling reading for a broad audience. |
