Chaos Magazine

Engagement party seating…idea for “mingler”–what do you think? Fun or just chaos?
I am hosting an engagement party. Most of the bridal party is in their early 20′s. I don’t like one big long table. Here’s my idea: two tables of 10-12 (rectangle); one for grooms fam and attendants; other for the brides. I plan to put the Bride, Groom, Maid of Honor and Best Man at each end of the table. Possibly a buffet style brunch right after church (everyone is already dressed and in their cars…to keep it simple) or is dinner better?….Any time the B, MH, BM or G go to the buffet table they will be asked to change seats with one of the other four so that everyone will get a chance to meet the 4 key wedding players…I am expecting they will be considerate of each other and it should mean only one or two seat changes before, during & after the meal. What do you think? Cute idea or too many bridal magazines? (First time Mother of Bride an having a ball!) Will this add to the meet/greet for the two fams? AND, we are not expecting gifts…do I say that specifically?
I’ve personally never been to an engagement party that had assigned seating, but I think your idea sounds like fun.
However, I would be more concerned that the actual families meet rather than meet the wedding party. Maybe you could do something that will get the two sides mingling. I’m guessing everyone knows the bride and groom on each side, I think I would concentrate more on the families getting to know each other.

A Billion Lives: An Eyewitness Report from the Frontlines of Humanity By Jan Egeland $17.99 Called “the world’s conscience” and one of the 100 most influential people of our time by Time magazine, Jan Egeland has been the public face of the United Nations. As Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, he was in charge of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) for three and a half years.
One of the bravest and most adventuresome figures on the international scene, Egeland takes us to the frontlines of war and chaos in Iraq, to scenes of ethnic cleansing in Darfur, to the ground zeroes of famine, earthquakes, and tsunamis. He challenges the first world to act. A Billion Lives is his on-the-ground account of his work in the most dangerous places in the world, where he has led relief efforts, negotiated truces with warlords, and intervened in what many had thought to be hopeless situations.
As one of Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s closest advisers, Jan Egeland was at the heart of crises during a difficult period in UN history, when the organization was plagued by the divisive aftermath of the Iraq war, the Oil-for-Food scandal, and terror attacks against UN workers. On the day Egeland came to New York to take up his job, the UN building in Baghdad was destroyed by a huge bomb, killing one of his predecessors, Sergio de Mello. Two months later Annan sent Egeland to Iraq to judge whether the UN could keep a presence there.
Since that first mission to Baghdad, Egeland has been envoy to such places as Darfur, Eastern Congo, Lebanon, Gaza, Northern Israel, Northern Uganda, and Colombia. He coordinated the massive international relief efforts after the Indian Ocean tsunami and South Asian earthquake. As a negotiator and activist, Egeland is famous for direct language, whether he’s addressing warlords, guerrilla leaders, generals, or heads of state.
A Billion Lives is his passionate, adventure-filled eyewitness account of the catastrophes the world faces. Company They Kept $13.66 Our most remarkable writers share what has influenced them the most: each other. Many of the illustrious contributors to The New York Review of Books have had deep and abiding relationships-both personal and intellectual-with other poets, writers, artists, composers, and scientists of equal stature. The Company They Kept is a collection of twenty-seven accounts of these varied friendships-most of them undeniably fraught with idiosyncratic complexities. One of the sweetest and funniest is Prudence Crowther’s memoir of her romance, at age thirty, with the seventy-four-year old S. J. Perelman ( As a friend of mine put it, ‘Yeah, too bad you couldn’t have met when you were twenty six and he was seventy-or when he was thirty, and your parents hadn’t met yet.’ ). Darryl Pinckney recalls his unsettling stint as Djuna Barnes’s handyman. Susan Sontag’s piece on Paul Goodman is more about how they never hit it off; Seamus Heaney’s remembrance of Tom Flanagan has all the melancholy affection of a bereft and beloved son. Larry McMurtry and Ken Kesey were grad students together-for years afterward, McMurtry recalls, the Merry Pranksters would show up unannounced, and throw his family and neighbors into hilarious chaos. Derek Walcott recalls his parting of the ways with Robert Lowell, and of their bittersweet reconciliation. And Robert Oppenheimer writes that he wants to dispel the clouds of myth surrounding Albert Einstein: As always, the myth has its charms; but the truth is far more beautiful. From Anna Akhmatova’s dreamlike description of wandering through Paris with the impoverished Modigliani to Joseph Brodsky’s account of his first meeting with Isaiah Berlin (from whichhe returned to report, around the kitchen table, to Stephen Spender and W.H. Auden), these pieces are tantalizing glimpses into the lives of those who have made The New York Review of Books into what Esquire magazine calls the premier literary-intellectual magazine in the English l |

In the Shadow of the American Dream $172.93 Few artists have captured the emotional, sexual, and political chaos of modern urban life as perceptively as David Wojnarowicz, whom Out magazine has called an acute observer of the unmapped region surrounding his heart and one of the best writers of his generation . Killer Heels $6.99 Hilarious, sexy, and loaded with suspense, Sheryl J. Anderson’s slick debut novel pits advice columnist Molly Forrester against the magazine world, Manhattan’s singles scene, and cold-blooded murder… When murder plays havoc with your career, sex life, and Jimmy Choos… Molly Forrester enjoys playing a Dear Abby type for Zeitgeist, a Manhattan glossy. She’s always hoped opportunity would knock, not throw itself at her feet as is the case when she stumbles literally over a colleague’s body in her brand new pumps. Now her chance to get closer to real news has presented itself as she stares at her spoiled Jimmy Choos planted firmly in a pool of blood… It’s time to call your girlfriends… Molly recruits trusty chums Cassady and Tricia to help her solve the crime. But she’s getting distracted by the adorable homicide detective on the case. Unfortunately, she must first deal with Peter, her pretentious boyfriend. After a second name is brutally struck from the masthead, Molly investigates and stumbles again. This time, it’s on dangerous secrets within Zeitgeist’s ranks. Now her involvement in this gory chaos might just cost her a whole lot more than a pair of upscale designer footwear… Sparkles like fine champagne….will tap right to the top of the Best First lists. -Carolyn Hart, author of Murder Walks the Plank |

Live Free or Die Hard – Used $12.99 After a twelve-year hiatus, Bruce Willis is back as New York City detective John McClane, who still plays by his own set of rules. Following DIE HARD (1988), DIE HARDER (1990), and DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE (1995), the fourth installment in the popular action series stars DEADWOOD's Timothy Olyphant as Thomas Gabriel, an evil mastermind who is determined to bring down the entire infrastructure of the United States on Independence Day, sending the country into anarchy and chaos. Joining him on his mission of destruction is the elegant Mai, played by Maggie Q from MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III. McClane becomes involved when he gets caught in the crossfire while transporting prisoner Matt Farrell (Justin Long, most well known as the mac in a series of computer commercials), a hacker extraordinaire who is the perfect complement to the old-school McClane, who eschews cell phones, computers, and doing anything the easy way. But when Gabriel kidnaps McClane's daughter, Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, from the DEATH PROOF section of GRINDHOUSE), it gets personal. Full of the sarcastic humor, exciting action sequences — including flying cars — and fun characters that have defined the series, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARDER is an excellent addition, directed by Len Wiseman (UNDERWORLD and UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION). The plot was based on a magazine article, "A Farewell to Arms," written by John Carlin, that appeared in a 1997 issue of WIRED magazine. The movie also features Kevin Smith as a computer geek — er, expert — known as Warlock, who still lives in his mother's basement. Yippee-ki-yay indeed. |

The Texas City Disaster, 1947 $19.95 On April 16, 1947, a small fire broke out among bags of ammonium nitrate fertilizer in the hold of the ship Grandcamp as it lay docked at Texas City, Texas. In the ensuing chaos, no one gave much thought to the ship in the next slip, the High Flyer. It exploded sixteen hours later. –BOOK JACKET. The story of the Texas City explosions – America’s worst industrial disaster in terms of casualties – has never been fully told until now. In this book, Hugh W. Stephens draws on official reports, newspaper and magazine articles, personal letters, and interviews with several dozen survivors to provide the first full account of the disaster at Texas City. –BOOK JACKET. Stephens describes the two explosions and the heroic efforts of Southeast Texans to rescue survivors and cope with extensive property damage. At the same time, he explores why the disaster occurred, showing how a chain of indifference and negligence made a serious industrial accident almost inevitable, while a lack of emergency planning allowed it to escalate into a major catastrophe. This gripping, cautionary tale holds important lessons for a wide reading public. –BOOK JACKET. |
