This decorative sheet print belongs to a group of about seventy prints from the collection of Sir Hans Sloane and so are datable to before his death in 1753. This image shows scholars playing chess in a garden. The scene is set in a cartouche in the shape of a pomegranate. The intricacy of the double image resembles earlier fine Ming-dynasty colour prints illustrating Romance Chamber by Min Qiji (active 1580–1661). Apart from calligraphy, poetry and painting, chess was one of the leisurely pursuits of the educated gentleman or retired official, having been played at least since the third century in China (it was later introduced to Japan). The numerous chess manuals written in the Ming dynasty indicate its increasing popularity. The pomegranate with its abundant seeds (zi) may be read as a pun expressing the wish for many sons.

Chess Strategy in Action

Chess Strategy in Action

$27.97

John Watson extends the theory presented to enormous acclaim in Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy and illustrates it with many practical examples by modern players such as Kasparov, Anand, Kramnik, Ivanchuk, Shirov and Morozevich. In Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy, Watson broke new ground by describing the developments in chess strategy since the time of Nimzowitsch. He explained how modern players are more willing than their predecessors to favor dynamic considerations over static ones, and how a ‘rule-independent’ approach has greatly enriched chess. The best evidence of the effectiveness of this dynamic approach to chess is shown by the dominant results of Garry Kasparov, and the rise of a new generation of supergrandmasters who play uncompromising and unrelentingly imaginative chess. Those who enjoyed Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy will welcome the clarification of important concepts. Chess Strategy in Action can also be read on its own as an outstanding collection of modern games with thoughtful and enlightening annotations.

The Road to Chess Mastery

The Road to Chess Mastery

$33.47

Chess players often reach a certain level and subsequently seem unable to become any stronger. They attain solid and even promising positions without having any well formulated ideas of how to continue the game. They frequently do not understand the strategic requirements of the niceties which go into the building up of a strong position. The Road to Chess Mastery is a collection of 25 games annotated specifically for the purpose of showing how to improve their chess. All phases of chess technique are included: discussions of the basic ideas behind modern openings, explanations of the handling of typical middle game positions, consideration of certain endgames, examples of the kind of technical analysis a chess player must make before deciding on the next move.Through an introduction that explains how the ordinary chess player can improve in the various phases of the game of chess, and in enlightening commentaries far more extensive than space permits in an ordinary annotated game, former World Champion Dr. Max Euwe shows how a chess player should think, by indicating the moves for all but the most obvious moves of each game. By applying what he learns in this work the reader may, indeed, find himself traveling the road to chess mastery.

Collection of Chess Studies by Troitzky

Collection of Chess Studies by Troitzky

$25.92

Alexey Alexeyevich Troitzky (1866-1942) is considered to have been the greatest composer of chess endgame studies ever. To call him a genius is to trivialize his accomplishments, because there are many geniuses, but few can equal the output of Troitzky. In his lifetime, Troitzky composed more than one thousand chess endgame studies. Nobody really knows how many. In this work, published in 1937, he started an ambitious project to collect all of his creations together and then put them into order according to theme. In this, the first volume of the projected project, Troitzky presented in order endgames which either started with a queen or a rook already on the board or else with a solution that involved promoting a pawn to a queen or a rook. Looking at the section starting on page 259 entitled "Classification of Studies by Themes," one can see the logical ordering of this book. Previous reprints of this work have omitted 72 pages which include the analysis of the two knights vs. pawn endgames which Troitzky proved for the first time leads to a win for the two knights, depending on the position of the pawn. By removing this section, previous editors butchered the work, because many of these compositions end with a position involving two knights against a pawn. In these cases, Troitzky simply writes "And wins." To see how White wins one needs the section on two knights against pawn. Here is the complete work. Nowadays, the great sport has become trying to bust or "cook" by computer analysis the long established problems such as those in this book. However, Troitzky’s compositions have stood the test of time more than those of other composers. Computers have a horizon beyond which theycannot see. Thus, endgame composition and analysis is one field where humans can still beat and perhaps will always be able to defeat even the most powerful computers. The problems in this book are truly fantastic. The solutions look impossible. Yet, what seems like many defenses are simply not there. Somehow there are no safe places where the king or queen can escape or there is a knight just in exactly the right spot to give a fork. It is good that the solutions come right after the problems, because nobody could ever solve them if the solutions were put in the back.

Chess Blueprints: Planning in the Middlegame

$19.49

Planning is critical to winning in chess. While other writers offer you thinking tools for building an effective plan, in Chess Blueprints: Planning in the Middlegame Nikolay Yakovlev gives you the bricks – the positional themes and patterns that you need to know in order to make use of those fancy tools. With 188 positions and 559 diagrams ranging from the classics to little-known gems of Russian chess, the author challenges you to form your own impression and then see how the masters honed in on the key elements to achieve victory, or neglected them and went down to defeat. Should you castle, or press the attack? Are rolling center pawns worth a piece? Where does determination end and obstinacy begin? Far from a dry listing of ideas and examples, Chess Blueprints: Planning in the Middlegame is a rich collection of strategic tips and psychological advice to help you conduct the attack, defeat your opponent’s aggression, and cash in on a tiny endgame advantage.

Premium Lewis Chess set

Premium Lewis Chess set

$550

This premium Lewis Chess set has a high quality wooden board, and is an authentic replica of one of the British Museum’s most iconic pieces. The remarkable chess pieces were found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides. No exact account of the discovery remains, but they apparently came to light after the collapse of a sand-bank on the coast of the island revealed their hiding place to a passing islander. 93 pieces from the hoard are known today. They are all carved from walrus ivory and include a belt buckle and some plain draughtsmen as well as the 78 chessmen. They date from the mid to late 12th century, and the style of carving, especially the intricate interlocking animal and floral designs on the thrones of the seated figures, indicate that they are of Scandinavian workmanship; however, their exact origin is not certain and they may have been made in Britain by a craftsman skilled in this style of Viking art. The British Museum bought 67 of the chessmen towards the end of 1831. Read more about the Lewis Chess pieces

Viktor Lvovich Korchnoi, one of the world’s two leading chess players and five times candidate for the World Championship, defected from the Soviet Union in 1976 at the age of forty-five and now lives in Switzerland. Describing Korchnoi in his introduction to this book, International Master Bill Hartston writes: ‘… Korchnoi is unique. When he sits down to a game, he brings to bear a combination of concentration, determination, and energy which no other grandmaster can match.’ Korchnoi’s style of play is of immense interest to spectators and chess enthusiasts because of his great fighting spirit and his frequent battles against the chess clock. Korchnoi’s Chess Games comprises almost 1700 games played up to the beginning of 1978 and is the most comprehensive and systematic collection of this great player’s games ever to be published. The editors have included every available tournament and match game played by Korchnoi since 1945, and there are a number of miscellaneous games from blitz tournaments and simultaneous exhibitions. My Best Games of Chess 1908-1923

$25.05

This is the book that every chess master and grandmaster has read and studied and every aspiring chess master should be reading. The author, a World Chess Champion, clearly explains the most complex and difficult concepts. Grandmaster Reuben Fine wrote that Alekhine’s collection of best games was one of the three most beautiful that he knew. World Champion Garry Kasparov wrote, "Alexander Alekhine is the first luminary among the others who are still having the greatest influence on me. I like his universality, his approach to the game, his chess ideas. I am sure that the future belongs to Alekhine chess." Bobby Fischer wrote, "He had great imagination. He could see more deeply into a situation than any other player in chess history. It was in the most complicated positions that Alekhine found his grandest concepts." Chess Journalist Jerry Hanken writes, "The study of this book added 300 points to my rating and made me a master." In 1927, Alekhine became World Chess Champion by defeating Capablanca in a match. He lost the world title to Euwe in 1935 but won it back in 1937. He held the title of World Chess Champion from then until his death in 1946.

Chess Movies 2: The Means and Ends

Chess Movies 2: The Means and Ends

$18.45

"Chess Movies" represents a new idea in the Pandolfini Chess Library series. It offers instructional material with every single move diagrammed and explained. Thus a chessboard and pieces are not needed to follow through. This makes it possible to rely solely on the book itself, as one would with a text on tactics and problems, without having to set up the positions. It’s almost as if one is sitting in a movie theater, watching the film roll by, with the narrative carried along by subtitles. But whereas a film seen in the theater just keeps going, here you can "stop” the action and take time thinking about what you’re seeing and what’s being explained to you, as if you were home watching on your own DVD.In this second volume of the Chess Movies series, The Means and Ends, the enthusiast is presented with an assortment of 50 precisely finessed and well-executed endgames from the oeuvres of the world’s foremost chess gladiators. Lasker, Rubinstein, Capablanca, Karpov, Fischer, Anand and other chess gods, offered in stratagem, maneuver, and insightful simplification, provide the subject matter for this newest collection of chess cinema. Taking off from volume 1 of the Chess Movies series, the present volume shows the other end of successful chess play, the actual final moves of winning endgames. Read and watch on, and may all of you play happily ever after.

David Janowski: Artist of the Chess Board

David Janowski: Artist of the Chess Board

$35.99

David Janowski was one of the grandest of grandmasters at the cusp of the 19th and 20th centuries. Victories in individual games against Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca and Alekhine, a phenomenal run of successes in major tournaments and a universally acknowledged elegance of style, combined to make him one of the most feared and respected exponents of the game. Janowski, however, has not been rewarded in English language chess literature with the accolades he deserves. In this book, the first collection in English of his best games and results, the authors introduce us to a great fighter and a great artist, knowledge of whose games will enrich the experience of any chess aficionado. Alexander Cherniaev is a Russian Grandmaster, journalist and author, now – after the collapse of the USSR – based in Guildford, England. He has been a silver medallist in the Moscow championship and is a well known figure in the Four Nations Chess League. He has also scored fine results in tournaments at St Petersburg, Wijk aan Zee, Davos and Hastings where he has come second in the challengers and competed in the premier. Alexander Meynell is the grandson of Lord Killearn, top board player in his day for the House of Lords chess team. Continuing the family tradition for excellence at chess, Alexander Meynell is official coach of the Hammersmith Chess Club, maintains one of Britain’s most extensive chess libraries and has won First Prize in the Major Tournament at Hastings.

Oxford Encyclopedia of Chess Games

Oxford Encyclopedia of Chess Games

$37.9

In this encyclopedia we set out to publish all the important games of chess which have been played since the modern laws came into force in the late 1400s. We have chosen to include all the recorded games played up to 1800, every game played in all major tournaments and matches from 1801, and every traceable game of each player who was at one time one of the best two players in the world. The games are arranged chronologically. Within each year the tournaments are presented first, followed by the matches, and then the miscellaneous games. Each game is allotted a unique code number which locates it in the book. Thus, 1849-LON-3 is the third game played in the tournament London 1849. All tournaments are identified by date and place. We use the year in which the tournament started for events played in December-January. The complete list of places and codes is on page xviii. Matches are indicated by the symbol x and the initial letters of the players, so that the second game of the Lewis-Wilson match of 1819 is 1819-x LW-2. Miscellaneous games are shown by *, as in 1841-*PS-1; for further information see the complete list of symbols. At the top of each game appears the date on which it was played, the place (for miscellaneous games) and, if the game has analysis, the name of the annotator. At the end of the game appears the bibliographic reference which explains (through the full bibliography on pages 455-6) where the game was found. The computer-generated indexes are the most detailed ever produced for a chess book, and present a mine of information and statistical analysis. The ‘player index’ gives, for each player in the book, a complete list of opponents, with the result and code number for each game, and for every major player a complete tournament and match record. The openings index’ lists every opening variation which appears in the book, and the code number for every game played with each. The endgame index’ refers the reader to all those games in which particular endgames occur. These games were buried deep in the chess libraries of the world. Our principal sources have been the British Library (whose system of Cyrillic transliteration we have employed), the Bodleian Library at Oxford, the Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, ‘s-Gravenhage, and the John G. White Collection, Cleveland Public Library, Cleveland, Ohio. Of the many friends, acquaintances, and scholars who have helped us in our search we should particularly like tothank MrJeremy Gaige, Miss K. M. E. Murray (for permission to use the H. J. R. Murray collection at the Bodleian Library), Mr David Lawson, Mr Craig Pritchett, Mr Ken Whyld, and Mr Baruch H. Wood.

If players get stuck, help is at hand Readers can ‘ask a grandmaster’ to obtain the guidance they need to help solve the puzzles. However, they have to use this option carefully, as it will cost them some of their hard-earned points. Either on their own or with friends, this book will provide hours of brain-teasing enjoyment. — Both books include puzzles for all levels — Grandmaster hints to help readers through the most taxing puzzles — Unique scoring system enables players to monitor their progress through the book Grandmaster James Plaskett, a player with renowned tactical ability, tests players of all levels with a collection of tactical chess puzzles.

Quickest Chess Victories of All Time

This book contains a comprehensive collection of the shortest decisive games in chess history. It is an indispensable guide to the pitfalls and traps that lurk in every opening system. An ability to punish errors in the opening is an essential aspect of modern opening play. All too often players fail to seize their chances to win a crisp miniature game. The thousands of games featured in this book show how to detect the opponent’s errors and take maximum advantage

Modern End-Game Studies for the Chess Player

Modern End-Game Studies for the Chess Player

$21.94

In selecting the 101 studies in the collection the aim has been two-fold. First, to present to the chess public the quintessence of the most brilliant and artistic studies of the first half of the Twentieth Century; and, secondly, to demonstrate to the chess-player how useful many of the ideas contained in thse studies can be in over-the-board play. All these studies are miniatures – none contains more than ten pieces – to show the end-game ideas in their clearest and most brilliant form. Harry Golombek, the translator, has enlarged the original collection to include the best examples of all the various present-day schools of end-game composition. Hans Bouwmeester is a veteran Dutch International Master. He won some important first prizes in the 1950′s and represented his country 7 times in the Chess Olympiads. in 1972 he became captain of the Dutch team. Bouwmeester, however, is primarily noted for his literary contribution to chess. An ardent student of the Dutch world champion Dr Max Euwe, Bouwmeester was editor of the celebrated Chess Archives and authored a number of important books on the End-game, of which this is perhaps his most notable. Harry Golombek was the king of chess writers. Chess correspondent for The London Times and The Observer, he possessed an unrivalled gift for transforming a chess game into an heroic saga with himself as the bard, singing the exploits of his chosen heroes of the mind. Several times British Champion, Golombek also played top board for England in the Olympiad and represented the British Chess Federation in the FIDE World Championship cycle. He was fluent in Russian and personally attended the World Chess Championships of 1954, 1957 and 1958 as ajudge.

Chess Movies 1: Quick Tricks

Chess Movies 1: Quick Tricks

$11.59

Lights! Action! Chess!Chess Movies represents a new idea in the Pandolfini Chess Library series. It offers instructional material with every single move diagrammed and explained. Thus a chessboard and pieces are not needed to follow through. This makes it possible to rely solely on the book itself as one would with a text on tactics and problems without having to set up the positions even though the present volume Quick Tricks contains games of ten full moves or more. It’s almost as if one is sitting in a movie theater watching the film roll by with the narrative carried along by subtitles. But whereas a film seen in the theater just keeps going here you can âstopâÂ? the action and take time thinking about what you’re seeing and what’s being explained to you as if you were home watching on your own DVD. In this first offering of the series Quick Tricks the reader (viewer) is provided with a collection 64 neat traps and shots in the opening illustrations often stemming from the practice of the world’s best players. There’s a variety too so that you can sample different openings and variations. All you have to do is read the beginning paragraph sit back in your living room on your favorite flight commuter bus or train ride and pleasure your way through each informative film. It’s also a great way to prepare for upcoming competition. Just find a comfortable chair and spend a few hours watching learning and enjoying your way into shape.

Chess Variant

Chess Variant

$84.44

A chess variant is a game derived from, related to or similar to chess in at least one respect. The difference from chess can include one or more of the following: Different board (larger or smaller, nonsquare board shape overall or different spaces used within the board such as triangles or hexagons instead of squares). Fairy pieces different from those used within chess. Different rules for capture, move order, game goal, etc. National chess variants which are older than Western chess, such as chaturanga, shatranj, xiangqi, and shogi, are traditionally also called chess variants in the Western world. They have some similarities to chess and share a common ancestor game. The number of possible chess variants is unlimited. D.B. Pritchard, the author of Encyclopedia of Chess Variants, estimates that there are over 2000 chess variants, confining the number to published ones. Wadysaw Gliskis hexagonal chess. One of many chess variants. In the context of chess problems, chess variants are called fantasy chess, heterodox chess or fairy chess. Some chess variants are used only in chess composition and not for playing. 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection

20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection

$9.99

Like any record company worth their salt, MCA knows a good gimmick when they see it, and when the millennium came around — well, the 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection wasn’t too far behind. Supposedly, the millennium is a momentous occasion, but it’s hard to feel that way when it’s used as another excuse to turn out a budget-line series. But apart from the presumptuous title, 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection turns out to be a very good budget-line series. True, it’s impossible for any of these brief collections to be definitive, but they’re nevertheless solid samplers that don’t feature a bad song in the bunch. For example, take Etta James’ 20th Century volume — it’s an irresistible 11-song summary of her Chess years. There may be a couple of noteworthy songs missing, but many of her best-known songs for the label are here, including “At Last,” “Something’s Got a Hold on Me,” “All I Could Do Was Cry,” “Stop the Wedding,” “Pushover,” “Don’t Cry Baby,” “Trust in Me,” “Tell Mama,” “Almost Persuaded,” and “I’d Rather Go Blind.” Serious fans will want something more extensive, but this is an excellent introduction for neophytes and a great sampler for casual fans, considering its length and price. That doesn’t erase the ridiculousness of the series title, but the silliness is excusable when the music and the collections are good. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

A Wanderer in the Perfect City: Selected Passion Pieces

A Wanderer in the Perfect City: Selected Passion Pieces

$17

There is something both marvelous and hilarious, writes Lawrence Weschler, in watching the humdrum suddenly take flight. This is, in part, a collection of such launchings. Indeed, the eight essays collected in A Wanderer in the Perfect City do soar into the realm of passion as Weschler profiles people who were just moseying down the street one day, minding their own business, when suddenly and almost spontaneously, they caught fire, they became obsessed, they became intensely focused and intensely alive. With keen observations and graceful prose, Weschler carries us along as a teacher of rudimentary English from India decides that his destiny is to promote the paintings of an obscure American abstract expressionist; a gifted poker player invents a more exciting version of chess; an avant-garde Russian emigre conductor speaks Latin, exclusively, to his infant daughter; and Art Spiegelman composes Maus. But simple summaries can’t do these stories justice: like music, they derive their character from digressions and details, cadence and tone. And like the upwelling of passion Weschler’s characters feel, they are better experienced than explained. Weschler seems so hungry for life that the rest of us become hungry for him . . . a magician, a performer, and a scholar. All in one. –from the Foreword by Pico Iyer Weschler’s essays are exquisitely written–so perfectly and unobtrusively organized that one can’t imagine telling them a better way. — New York Times Book Review Weschler is the owner of a large dose of novelistic vision, and a particularly poetic set of ears, but . . . as important an endowment as a novelist’s eye or a poet’s ear is still thejournalistic nose which led him down the proverbial alley. — National Post (Canada) Weschler is a thoughtful observer and a superb storyteller. — Minneapolis Star Tribune

 All Kinds of Blues

All Kinds of Blues

$11.98

This early-’60s date was the second — and one of the best — of Memphis Slim’s many top-notch Bluesville recordings. Featuring Slim accompanying himself on the piano, All Kinds of Blues is a vintage set of mellow yet deep blues by one of the music’s most urbane performers. Whether reveling in his considerable boogie-woogie chops (“Three-in-One-Boogie”) or tossing off a wryly sexual romp (“Grinder Man Blues”), Slim always seems to be totally at ease and in command. And while newcomers are advised to start out with one of his early-’50s sets on Chess, this will be one collection no Memphis Slim fan will want to overlook. ~ Stephen Cook, Rovi

 Arthur Kaufmann

Arthur Kaufmann

$46.45

This book explores the life and chess career of Arthur Kaufmann, a Romanian-born grandmaster-level player of the 1900s and 1910s. A contemporary of luminaries such as Capablanca, Schlechter, Tartakower, Reti, R. Spielmann and M. Vidmar, Kaufmann remained an enigma despite his high-level play. Through an analysis of primary sources, including private correspondence, diaries and other archival material, this text reconstructs Kaufmann”s chess career in detail. His tournament and match play games in early 1890s and 1910s are explored, as are his little-known matches against some of the top players of his time and his participation in the Trebitsch memorials in war-time Vienna. The book also offers an unprecedented and extensive account of Kaufmann”s close relationship with Arthur Schnitzler, the famed Austrian dramatist, whose diary offers important clues to Kaufmann”s life and work as a philosopher. There is a collection of 70 Kaufmann games with detailed annotations and diagrams.]

Artists of the 20th Century: Marcel Duchamp

Artists of the 20th Century: Marcel Duchamp

$19.99

An artist whose work embraced the influences of dada and surrealism while revealing an influential and expressive perspective all his own, Marcel Duchamp burst into public recognition in 1913 with his famous painting Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2, which caused a sensation at the fabled New York Armory Show of that year. After crafting his masterwork, The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors Even, a large box containing a series of drawings, prints and notes, Duchamp moved on to sculpture, and stunned the art world with his “Ready Mades” series, a collection of common household objects to which he affixed his signature, turning them into objects d’art decades before Andy Warhol became famous for the same trick. Artists of the 20th Century: Marcel Duchamp is a documentary which explores the short but vital career of this trailblazing artist, his decision to leave visual art behind in favor of chess, and the lasting influence of his work and his philosophies. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

 Brand New Day

Brand New Day

$13.98

With customary thoughtfulness and his usual verve, Sting is talking about Brand New Day, his sumptuous new album, a collection of songs exploring the theme of love. I didn’t set out to write lyrics just about love, yet almost all the songs have the theme of broken lives that can be mended by love. My challenge was to write a happy love song without being banal or smug. For example, ‘Brand New Day,’ the last song, begins with a jaundiced view and then moves toward acceptance, to diving back into love. It’s basically the thought that failing in love is an act of optimism – and I think if the album has a tone, for me…it’s an optimistic one. Incorporating highly rhythmic elements, echoes of Miles Davis and medieval plainsong, of Algerian pop and American Country Music, Brand New Day also ranges, with typical Sting audacity, over a world of styles – here’s love in abundance of musical tongues. For every irresistible hook or melody, there’s a rhythmic challenge or instrumental surprise. Trying to write simple pop songs over a compound time is my idea of a crossword puzzle – or three-dimensional chess, Sting explains. That’s my obsession. And, he laughs, I think people expect that of me to throw them a few loops here and there. They’d probably be disappointed if I didn’t.’ Co-produced by Sting and producer/programmer Kipper and featuring Sting’s customary peerless collaborators – guitarist Dominic Miller, drummers Manu Katche and Vinnie Colaiuta – and guest stars James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Branford Marsalis, Chris Boti and Cheb Mami, Sting’s seventh solo studio outing builds on the legacy of a visionary original, impatient with labels, categories.

 Bricks in My Pillow

Bricks in My Pillow

$12.98

This 14-song collection, consisting of tracks recorded on July 12, 1951, and October 25, 1952, completely transforms the landscape where Robert Nighthawk’s music is concerned. Up to now, apart from seeking out his prewar, unamplified work as Robert Lee McCoy (or McCullum) on Bluebird or grabbing a few tracks from some Chess reissues, there hasn’t been a lot of Robert Nighthawk in one place. Now there are 14 hard-rocking tracks, cut for United Records in Chicago and showing Nighthawk in his prime and loving it, playing a mean slide underneath some boldly provocative singing that could have given Muddy Waters a run for his money. The style is there, and the voice and the guitar are there, so why didn’t Nighthawk hit it big? Based on this collection, his style with an electric guitar just wasn’t as distinctive as Waters’ playing; additionally, he just didn’t have Waters’ (or Chess songwriter Willie Dixon’s) way with a catch phrase — there are some OK songs here (“Kansas City,” “You Missed a Good Man,” “Bricks in My Pillow”), but nothing as catchy or instantly memorable as “I Can’t Be Satisfied,” “Hoochie Coochie Man,” or “Got My Mojo Working.” A pair of instrumentals, “Nighthawk Boogie” and “U/S Boogie,” both driven by Nighthawk’s guitar and a romping piano, pretty much make this collection worthwhile and show the man in his peak form. Included on this collection are a pair of previously unissued tracks, an alternate take of “Seventy-Four,” and a loud, crunchy, but, alas, unfinished version of “The Moon Is Rising.” The sound is surprisingly clean and rich, especially given the 1951-1952 origins of the tapes. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
