Decoration Hatchling

Garter snakes, advice needed in general keeping of this snake?

I’m a first time snake owner and I will be getting a garter snake in a couple of weeks from a friend. This will be a hatchling that has been fed they are giving us a basic tank of a foot square with heat matt and water dish and hide. Is there anything else special I will need. This friend feeds their garters on frozen mice but I’ve read else where they really should have fish, worms etc… How should this be prepared? Would worms out the garden do? And what tank decoration could I use? Any general advice would be appreciated.
