Dragon Sand
What is the problem with sand for a bearded dragon?
I heard so many people say that sand is bad for a bearded dragon? That if they were to eat it, it would hurt them. And I also heard that sand is good. They like to dig and it’s where the wild is right?
So can anyone tell me in a nice way (not saying that the other is stupid or they are wrong or anything to insult anyone’s thoughts) what’s there thoughts on this and what they use for beding.
Older bearded dragons typically do fine on sand, though there have been some cases where impaction has occurred.
Younger dragons are more susceptible to the impaction however and shouldn’t be housed on any particulate substrate.
An impaction comes in 2 forms. There is the acute impaction, which is when there is a noticeable blockage in the intestine, stomach, or bowel. Then there is the chronic impaction. The chronic impaction is the more deadly of the 2. It is the slow accumulation of substrate that embeds itself in the lining of the intestinal tract. This is a very slow accumulation and can take a few years to develop into a full blown impaction that becomes noticeable. Unfortunately, it is normally too late to do much about it when you notice it.
Tyler B is wrong. Calci-sand is actually more dangerous than normal sand. It is digestible like the bag says, but calcium carbonate is an acid neutralizer. The more that gets consumed, the harder it is for the reptile to digest anything, let alone more of the calci-sand. Avoid the calci-sand as that stuff not only causes impactions, but it also causes hypercalcemia from ingesting too much calcium. The stuff is garbage and shouldn’t be used with any reptiles.
Carpet is not difficult to clean. It’s easiest when you have 2 pieces of it. This way, while one is being cleaned, you can use the other one. The repti-carpet on the market today is even machine washable. Just air dry it after it has been washed. It takes about 10 minutes of hanging time before it is completely dry. I own 2 dragons and both are on the carpet.
As mentioned by another user, sand isn’t even a natural substrate for dragons. Compacted clay is.

Be sure that your Dragon Fish gets plenty to eat, or it may starve to death. Dragon Fish should be kept singly unless a large group can be kept in a tank of about 100 gallons or more. In small tanks and small groups, one larger Dragon Fish will dominate the others and some may be bullied or not get enough food. Dragon Fish can be kept with most peaceful fish that are too large to swallow. |
