Electronic Monte
Is it Emission Legal to use a older type Q-jet Carb on a Newer vehicle?
My brother has 71 El Camino and basically we want to use to Q-jet carb on a 86 Chevy Monte Carlo.The only problem is we need to know if it is emission legal to use a NON-Electronic Computer controlled Q-jet carb on a Carb controlled Car.
Why bother? They are almost the same as far as cfm is concerned. also, the only thing the computer adjusts on the elec. q-jet is the fuel at idle. The rest of the rpm range is controlled by the carb. It is not legal to use the old carb on the new engine because it cant be controlled by the computer making the emissions controls useless. Here’s what i would do. Put a big smallblock in the monte(383, 400). Keep the electronic qjet and rejet it for the big motor. As long as the new motor doesn’t have a huge cam, everything will work as it should, and you can still pass emissions. I did this in jersey with an 86 caprice(originally 305, changed to 383). It passed the sniffer test with no problems. Just keep the cat.
