What study structure does a PhD take in comparison to a masters degre?

Does it still involve coursework and exams? Or is it simply research? And if so, how is it examinable to see if the student has attained the relevant qualification?

For the US:

A master’s degree can either require a thesis or not. If there is no thesis, getting the master’s degree is very much like college in that you take a lot of classes and they are your main focus. If there is a thesis, you will balance your time between research and coursework, and many of your courses will likely further your research (e.g., you can submit your research for the final project). The number of exams you take will depend on your field; some fields have no exams in their graduate programs, and others have many. There are no qualifying exams or anything for master’s degrees.

A PhD will also require coursework at the beginning; usually it will be a superset of the master’s coursework, although this is not universal. (Note that students at top-tier universities often can’t get out of these class requirements even if they have a master’s ahead of time, so a master’s will often be redundant with the PhD curriculum.) PhD students need to focus on research so they will take a lighter course load per semester than master’s students, and the classes they take will be more focused on their area of interest. Classes are usually only taken the first year or two; after that, PhD students only take special interest classes and spend all their time doing research.

There are a few types of PhD student exams. Some schools (Stanford is known for this) let you test out of all of your class requirements if you can. Others have an entrance exam (e.g., UCLA’s math program) that you take the first few weeks of entering. Nearly all universities have some time of “qualifying” or “preliminary” exam that is taken after a year or two in the program; this exam can either be broad or just on the student’s area. This is an important exam since it determines whether the student has enough knowledge to become an expert. Usually it is oral, or part oral. After that, you will have your thesis proposal and defense.
