In this volume Joseph Jacobs has proceeded on much the same lines as those which he laid down in compiling Celtic Fairy Tales. In making his selection he attempted to select the tales common both to Erin and Alba. He included, as specimen of the Irish medi eval hero tales, one of the three sorrowful tales of Erin: The Tale of the Children of Lir. For the drolls, or comic relief, of the volume, he drew upon the inexhaustible Kennedy and the great J. F. Campbell, who still stands out as the most prominent figure in the history of the Celtic Fairy Tale. Jacobs attempted to do what the brothers Grimm did for Germany, so far as that was possible. In Jacobs own words The Celtic materials are so rich that it would tax the resources of a whole clan of Grimms to exhaust the field. In this volume you will find 20 Celtic tales of Jack the Cunning Thief, Paddy oKelly and the Weasel, the Dream of Owen OMulready, The Farmer of Liddesdale, The Greek Princess and the Young Gardener, Elidore, the Ridere of Riddles and more. In Jacobs own words, The Celts went forth to battle, but they always fell. Yet the captive Celt has enslaved his captor in the realm of imagination. In an attempt to give a library of the Celts wealthy imagination to his readers, Jacobs has attempted to begin the readers captivity with the earliest recordings of these tales. And captivate he doesMore Celtic Fairy Tales not only preserves a cultural history, but is also richly entertaining. We invite you to curl up with this unique sliver of Celtic folklore not seen in print for over a century; immerse yourself in the tales and fables not heard in homes for many a year. A percentage of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the Princes Trust for their work with youth across the United Kingdom. Author: Jacobs, Joseph/ Batten, John D. Joseph Jacobs (18541916) was a literary and Jewish historian. He was a writer for the Jewish Encyclopaedia and a notable folklorist, creating several noteworthy collections of fairy tales. He was secretary of the Society of Hebrew Literature from 1878 to 1884, and in 1882 came into prominence as the writer of a series of articles in The Times on the persecution of the Jews in Russia. This led to the formation of the mansion house fund and committee, of which Jacobs was secretary from 1882 to 1900. In 1890 he edited English Fairy Tales, the first of his long series of books of fairy tales published. Others include Indian Fairy Tales (1892), Celtic Fairy Tales (1892), More English Fairy Tales (1894) and More Celtic Fairy Tales (1895). Delve into a world of kelpies, mermaids, selkies, ghosts, warlords, and fairies. This collection gives you Celtic tales, previously unrecorded or only found in obscure compilations. Mostly collected by the author on her ancestral home of the Isle of Barra in the Hebrides, these lesser-known tales from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales are supported by a brief history of the Celts, a glossary of the Gaelic integrated in the stories, an appendix of superstitions about fairy protection, and bibliographies that reflect the author's extensive research. Seventeen ballads collected almost one hundred years ago and excerpts from the author's journal of travels in Scotland make this book a unique and valuable resource for anyone who tells stories.

The chief object of this volume is to exhibit, in a manner acceptable to readers who are not specialists, the application of the principles and methods which guide investigations into popular traditions to a few of the most remarkable stories embodying the Fairy superstitions of the Celtic and Teutonic peoples. Some of the subjects discussed have already been dealt with by more competent inquirers. But even in these cases I have sometimes been able to supply additional illustrations of the conclusions previously arrived at, and occasionally, I hope, to carry the argument a step or two further than had been done before. I have thus tried to render the following pages not wholly valueless to students.

THE author has become convinced, by several years intimate intercourse with students of medicine, that their acquaintance with the subjects he has endeavored to include in this little volume would be facilitated, if the views, which are now taught and scattered throughout the often expensive works of their authors, were collected in a convenient form for study and reference. Taking it for granted that a knowledge of this subject, is of fundamental importance in its bearing upon the study of physiology and pathology, and stimulated by the frequent inquiries of students for an appropriate source of information, he has prepared what he now submits to them. He has sought to obtain a continuous history of the evolution of the cell doctrine up to its present state, without embarrassing his pages with a large number of isolated facts. He has attempted, however, to secure a completeness, and to make the work useful to physicians and others engaged in research, by careful references, and the addition of a bibliography, which he has sought to make accurate and extended. Some authors may have been overlooked such the writer cordially invites to send him references to their own papers, or to those of others they believe to have a bearing upon the subject. THE idea that animals and plants, however complex their organisation, are really composed of a limited variety of elementary parts, constantly recurring, was appreciated by Aristotle, while it appears to have been even more clearly conceived by the acknowIedged father of medical science, Galen….. A modern retelling of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this story of a 15-year-old American girl’s experience studying abroad in the Irish countryside borrows elements from Irish folklore and escapist-fantasy fiction. Adjustment to life with an Irish family is hard at first, but she forges a bond with her new school friends when, late one night, they slip out into the surrounding woods and revel with fairy-like creatures at a magical wedding party. Real settings in Ireland provide the backdrop for the story, and the Shakespearean storyline serves well to depict an adolescent’s breakthrough from outsider status to membership in an enchanted society.

 Bavarian Legends

Bavarian Legends

$12.99

A classic tale in the vein of Beowulf and Ivanhoe, Bavarian Legends is set circa 150 B.C. in a Celtic world of harsh realities and hard-won battles. Men fight and die to rid the land of a dragon menace. And they fight for lovefor the favor and hand of the fair Princess Lydia of Bavaria. A curse hangs over the realm, a threat of usurpation caused by an age-old rivalry that one man alone can resolve. That man is Prince Edward of Pannonia, great-grandson of the late Burgundian Prince Frederic. To succeed, he must brave the Bitter Mountains and return to the western empire. There in Bavaria he is confronted by the Burgundian captain of the guards, a proud man who embodies the malice of the late King Dominic, fraternal twin of Frederic and cause of his foreign exile. Will Edward prevail in his valiant quest to reclaim his family honor? A fairy-tale legend of spirited adventure with a gripping climax!

This move allows for lushly beautiful settings and diverse landscapes. More importantly, it a

Our book contains Volumes 1 and 2 of the original work. The superiority of Celtic folktales is due as much to the conditions under which they have been collected, as to any innate superiority of the folk imagination. The Celtic folktales were collected while the practice of story telling was still in full vigor, though there were every signs that its term of life was already numbered. Nowhere else was there so large & consistent a body of oral tradition about the national & mythical heroes as amongst the Gaels. Jacobs endeavored to include the best & most typical stories told by the chief masters of the Celtic folktale, Campbell, Kennedy, Hyde & Curtin, and to these he added the best tales scattered elsewhere. Handsomely illustrated.
