Fairy Print
Need name or author of book of fairy tales!?
I am looking for a book I read in my childhood–details are fuzzy. Help will be greatly appreciated!!
This is what I remember:
- collection of fairy stories
- published pre-1994 (could actually be old, maybe out of print)
- one of the stories involves a fairy’s attendants being turned into stones by goblins and goblins trying to break into a castle during a ball
- same story has a ring (w/ butter in it?) someone wears to tell if someone is a goblin impersonating a fairy at the ball
I know it’s a long shot, but I’m desperate to find it!
Italian Folktales by Italo Calvino perhaps. There are 200 tales in it listed in the site below. I have not read these but have read other of his books and they seem like fables and something you would like even if it is not the one you were looking for. In compiling More English Fairy Tales 1894], Joseph Jacobs flouted the Florklorists creed, choosing to present stories that would fill childrens imaginations with bright trains of images. Vividly painted princesses, Pied Pipers, pots of gold, giants, speaking cats, Kings, Hoybahs, wise men, washerwomen, and more overflow from the pages of this volume, all bound by the common threads of basic moral lessons. Many of the tales were recorded verbatim from storytellers. They are by no means in an authorised form, and even touch on the vulgar using archaic and colloquial English.
