Ethnographic Sorcery $16 According to the people of the Mueda plateau in northern Mozambique, sorcerers remake the world by asserting the authority of their own imaginative visions of it. While conducting research among these Muedans, anthropologist Harry G. West made a revealing discovery—for many of them, West’s efforts to elaborate an ethnographic vision of their world was itself a form of sorcery. In Ethnographic Sorcery , West explores the fascinating issues provoked by this equation. A key theme of West’s research into sorcery is that one sorcerer’s claims can be challenged or reversed by other sorcerers. After West’s attempt to construct a metaphorical interpretation of Muedan assertions that the lions prowling their villages are fabricated by sorcerers is disputed by his Muedan research collaborators, West realized that ethnography and sorcery indeed have much in common. Rather than abandoning ethnography, West draws inspiration from this connection, arguing that anthropologists, along with the people they study, can scarcely avoid interpreting the world they inhabit, and that we are all, inescapably, ethnographic sorcerers. |

Song of Sorcery $2.49 Elizabeth Ann Scarborough’s Song of Sorcery is another light-hearted contemporary fantasy adventure which will please the author’s many fans. Colin Songsmith sings a song to an old witch who takes an unlikely revenge. The witch’s granddaughter rescues him from the dire threat of being eaten alive by the cat. She hears the song, which happens to concern her recently married sister and a gypsy. Convinced that she has to save her sister, she takes the minstrel, the cat and her magical resources to Rowan Castle. The story is rich with descriptive details of setting and encounters with magical and fantastic creatures such as a talking cat, a lovesick dragon, and a bear prince. The characters speak in contemporary slang which plays nicely against the traditional fantastic settings. |

Sorcery in the Black Atlantic $25 Most scholarship on sorcery and witchcraft has narrowly focused on specific times and places, particularly early modern Europe and twentieth-century Africa. And much of that research interprets sorcery as merely a remnant of premodern traditions. Boldly challenging these views, Sorcery in the Black Atlantic takes a longer historical and broader geographical perspective, contending that sorcery is best understood as an Atlantic phenomenon that has significant connections to modernity and globalization. A distinguished group of contributors here examine sorcery in Brazil, Cuba, South Africa, Cameroon, and Angola. Their insightful essays reveal the way practices and accusations of witchcraft spread throughout the Atlantic world from the age of discovery up to the present, creating an indelible link between sorcery and the rise of global capitalism. Shedding new light on a topic of perennial interest, Sorcery in the Black Atlantic will be provocative, compelling reading for historians and anthropologists working in this growing field. |

The Sorcery Club $1.79 Rain is responsible for a great deal more than the mere growth of vegetables it is a controller, if a somewhat capricious controller, of man’s destiny. It was mainly, if not entirely, owing to rain that the French lost the Battle of Agincourt; whilst, if I mistake not, Confucius alone knows how many victories have been snatched from the Chinese by the same factor. |

The Sorcery of Color $30.95 Originally published in 2003 in Portuguese, The Sorcery of Color argues that there are longstanding and deeply-rooted relationships between racial and gender inequalities in Brazil. In this pioneering book, Elisa Larkin Nascimento examines the social and cultural movements that have attempted, since the early twentieth century, to challenge and eradicate these conjoined inequalities. The book’s title describes the social sleight-of-hand that disguises the realities of Brazilian racial inequity. According to Nascimento, anyone who speaks of racism—or merely refers to another person as black—traditionally is seen as racist. The only acceptably non-racist attitude is silence. At the same time, Afro-Brazilian culture and history have been so overshadowed by the idea of a general "Brazilian identity" that to call attention to them is also to risk being labeled racist. Incorporating leading international scholarship on Pan Africanism and Afrocentric philosophy with the writing of Brazilian scholars, Nascimento presents a compelling feminist argument against the prevailing policy that denies the importance of race in favor of a purposefully vague concept of ethnicity confused with color. |

Sorcery (Album) $60.54 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Sorcery is the debut album by Kataklysm released in 1995 by Nuclear Blast. It was later reissued with The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation as bonus tracks. Kataklysm is a Canadian death metal band. They call their musical style northern hyperblast after an advertisement in M.E.A.T. magazine describing another band, Fear Factory, as hyperblast. The term refers to the extremely fast blast beats that Kataklysms drummer, Max Duhamel, fuses into the music. Kataklysm was formed in 1991. At the beginning of their career they were mostly known for being one of the fastest, most chaotic metal bands. However, their music changed after Sylvain Houde left the band, and bassist/backing vocalist Maurizio Iacono took over Houdes vocal duties, and another fulltime bassist was recruited. A School for Sorcery $5.99 Nothing could have been more unexpected – or exciting – than the letter that arrives in the mail informing Tria Tesserel that she has been accepted at the prestigious Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted. Tria has known since she was a child that she had special gifts. Now she will be able to master her craft among peers as powerful as she. But Tria is crestfallen to discover the school is…well…a bit less grand than advertised. The shock of her dismal, tumbledown surroundings, however, is nothing compared to the surprise that awaits her: her roommate, Lina Mueller. An insufferable snob and haughty dilettante, Lina violates Simonton’s rules by casually flaunting her power whenever she pleases-and toward whomever displeases her. Unluckily for Tria, that includes her. When Lina eggs Tria into retaliating, it begins a sorcery civil war that lands both young women in front of the furious headmistress. But real trouble looms when Oryon-a classmate of formidable power but bent to dark purpose-decides to ally himself with evil forces. Conspiring with witches known as Dire Women, Oryon causes two classmates to disappear . . . imprisoned in a terrifying world beyond the reach of anyone but Tria. Has she the power to subdue Oryon and the Dire Women? If she fails, her classmates will die. Tria will have to make a journey unlike any she has ever undertaken. A journey alone into the heart of Evil. |

But prophecy spoke of a time when he would awake and again seek dominance over all the world. Now the Orb had been stolen by a priest of Torak, and that time was at hand. The master Sorcerer Belgarath and his daughter Polgara the arch-sorceress were on the trail of the Orb, seeking to regain it before the final disaster. And with them went Garion, a simple farm boy only months before, but now in the focus of the struggle. He had never believed in sorcery and wanted no part of it. Yet with every league they travelled, the power grew in him, forcing him to acts of wizardry he could not accept. THUS CONTINUES BOOK TWO OF THE BELGARIAD |

A New Orleans Voudou Priestess $112.69 Against the backdrop of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century New Orleans, A New Orleans Voudou Priestess: The Legend and Reality of Marie Laveau disentangles the complex threads of the legend surrounding the famous Voudou priestess. According to mysterious, oft-told tales, Laveau was an extraordinary celebrity whose sorcery-fueled influence extended widely from slaves to upper-class whites. Some accounts claim that she led the orgiastic Voudou dances in Congo Square and on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, kept a gigantic snake named Zombi, and was the proprietress of an infamous house of assignation. Though legendary for an unusual combination of spiritual power, beauty, charisma, showmanship, intimidation, and shrewd business sense, she also was known for her kindness and charity, nursing yellow fever victims and ministering to condemned prisoners, and her devotion to the Roman Catholic Church. The true story of Marie Laveau, though considerably less flamboyant than the legend, is equally compelling. In separating verifiable fact from semi-truths and complete fabrication, Long explores the unique social, political, and legal setting in which the lives of Marie Laveau’s African and European ancestors became intertwined. Changes in New Orleans engendered by French and Spanish rule, the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Jim Crow segregation affected seven generations of Laveau’s family, from enslaved great-grandparents of pure African blood to great-grandchildren who were legally classified as white. Simultaneously, Long examines the evolution of New Orleans Voudou, which until recently has been ignored by scholars. |

Anthology 1975-1984 $24.99 Few bands in the history of hard rock/heavy metal shifted stylistic gears as abruptly as Rainbow did. And unlike some veteran acts that attempt this makeover and only draw the wrath of their already-built audience, Rainbow enjoyed further chart success after the switch. Case in point, the 2009 double-disc set, Anthology, in which two contrasting styles — medieval metal and radio-friendly rock — are gloriously on display throughout. Immediately after splitting from Deep Purple in early 1975, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore enlisted the help of the then-largely unknown singer Ronnie James Dio, and issued a trio of albums that are basically a 101 course on the aforementioned medieval metal style. In other words, lots of swords-and-sorcery imagery (which would eventually become Dio’s trademark), epic compositions, organ/synth vs. guitar battles, etc. And some of metal’s all-time great tracks were composed as a result, tops being “Man on the Silver Mountain” (one of the best tracks that either Blackmore or Dio has ever been a part of), as well as “Stargazer” and the Jimi Hendrix-influenced”Catch the Rainbow” (which lyrically, is almost a carbon copy of Hendrix’s “Little Wing”). After Dio’s exit (to sign on as Ozzy Osbourne’s replacement in Black Sabbath), singer Graham Bonnet briefly signed on — lasting only one album — and bridging the two aforementioned styles that Rainbow is synonymous with, with another metallic off-shoot approach…party metal! For the sonic proof, check out “Since You’ve Been Gone,” while one of this set’s biggest errors is including a live version of another Bonnet-era classic, “All Night Long,” with his subsequent replacement, Joe Lynn Turner, on vocals (tsk, tsk, tsk). And it was upon Turner’s arrival as lead vocalist that Rainbow embarked on their last stylistic speciality — radio-friendly melodic rock, obviously constructed with the aim of doing battle with such then-chart toppers as Journey and Foreigner, as evidenced by such … |

Beyond the Myth $8.95 The king was going mad…So begins Polly Schoyer Brooks’s account of one of history’s most compelling stories and one of the world’s most popular heroines — Joan of Arc. Brooks tells us of a fifteenth-century France ravaged by war, plague, and religious conflict; of a king who suffered fits of madness and his weak son who made a disappointing successor; and of a girl from the countryside who accomplished what appeared to be miracles by rallying the dispirited French nation with her desire to see the rightful king rule. Little more than a year after her astounding triumphs — uniting the nation and securing the throne for Charles VII with her victory over the English at Orlean — nineteen-year-old Joan was imprisoned on charges of witchcraft and sorcery, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake. Polly Schoyer Brooks’s detailed narrative unveils the spirited young woman who became a patron saint and continues to inspire courage and faith. |

Bloodprint: A Novel of Psychological Suspense By Kitty Sewell $12.99 Haunted by black magic, ruthless human traffickers, and her own personal demons, a psychotherapist must cross a deadly line in order to save her new patient in this searing novel of psychological suspense.
Madeleine Frank knows all too well that it’s impossible to recover from some losses. She herself has escaped devastating heartbreak, fleeing her native Key West to begin life anew in the ancient city of Bath. But Madeleine’s demons have never left her and may, in fact, be closer than ever — in the mad visions of her mother, formerly a priestess of Santeria, the mysterious Afro-Cuban religion.
Rachel Locklear appears in her office seeking therapy, but Madeleine becomes increasingly troubled by the history of this hostile, damaged young woman. As the relationship with her new patient deepens, Madeleine discovers that Rachel’s childhood eerily echoes her own darkest secret. Reluctant to act unprofessionally and risk having Rachel walk out of her life forever, Madeleine keeps her suspicions to herself.
But Madeleine is unaware of sinister forces gathering strength in her patient’s life. On the run from her ruthless partner — a man who will stop at nothing to control her and her son — Rachel is desperate to keep her child safe from his father’s dangerous “associates.” Finally she has no choice but to involve the only person she can trust in a murderous web of revenge and deception.
From the tropical lushness of Key West to the imposing Georgian streets of Bath two women and their painful pasts collide dangerously with Cuban sorcery, prostitution, and coldhearted murder — culminating in a tale as terrifying as it is compelling. |
