Gargoyle Incense
Fellow Catholics, gargoyles and incense?
Ok so supposedly gargoyles are used to scare evil spirits away…..but they look scary/evil/sinister as well, so how is that going to help? Or do I only see that because I am evil/sinister? Am I the only one seeing them as scary carved out things? Are you guys seeing angels or something? O_O
The same way people say incense smells nice (at least for “good” people), well to me it smells like old smoke (?) sheesh

To the medieval mindset, the idea of a big, ugly, demon-scaring gargoyle perched on their buildings (and in some cases, serving as a downspout) made perfect sense. Demons were ugly, so you had to come up with something even uglier to stampede the critters into leaving.
Today, all you need is someone to announce that it’s time to choose new committee members if you want to see a church clear out in a hurry.
As far as the incense is concerned, I am allegeric to so many things that I take no chances. If I see someone with a censer headed my way, I hide out down in the bathroom for a little while until the air clears.
It’s funny that you should mention this because I just read a joke about incense this evening in a book called “We Happy WASPS.” The joke goes as follows:
Back in the ’40′s, a young boy was attending his first Mass. He opened the church door just in time to see the cassocked priest headed down the aisle, swinging a smoking censer.
He jumped back outside, held the door open a crack, and yelled, “Hey, lady, your pocketbook is on fire!!”
