Gnome Hobbit
Can I use the term half-ling?
Can I use the term half-ling? or is it copy righted by J.R.R. Tolkiens.
I was writing my book and I’ve been using halfling but in the I finally remembered that it was in his books and movies.
(halfling in my book is not a hobbit or gnome.)
First, it’s J.R.R. Tolkien, not J.R.R. Tolkeins.
Secondly, “halfling” does not appear in the dictionary (as far as I can see). So it is a neologism to say the least.
Thirdly, if Tolkein chooses to invent a new word (like his uses of “dwarves” as the plural of “dwarf”, for example) then that is his choice – that does not give him copyright over the word itself.
I would suggest that if you are using the word halfling in some different sense than that used by Tolkein, you just invent a different new word, and use that. Using “halfling” is very unlikely to cause you copyright problems, but – given its former well known usage by Tolkein and in derivates of his works – there is a possibility that it may confuse or alienate some of your readers.
