Griffith Large

Which University should I go to when I study abroad?

I’m hoping to study abroad a year from now and am using AustraLearn and going through my own University (NCSU) to do so. However, I have hit a wall as far as making my ultimate decision on where I want to go. I have done all the research, looked for pics, videos, etc. So I want to know from people that actually live in Australia and/or who have experience with some of these schools to help me make a decision.
I have it down to Griffith University Gold Coast, CQ University, James Cook Cairns, and James Cook Townsville.
I am a zoology major looking for a very warm climate, lots of wildlife, beach, larger campus, and a few other small things. So based on this please give me the pros and cons of each university and which you think would be best suited for me.
Thanks so much for the help; I’m also open to talking with anyone that may be able to give me more in-depth information.

Griffith is not recognised for its science degrees, so I wouldn’t recommend going there for zoology. That being said, James Cook and CQU (especially CQU) do not rank very well amongst Australian Universities. On the subject of CQU, another reason I wouldn’t recommend it is that the main campus is in Rockhampton which is um… I don’t think it’s what you’re looking for.

From what you’ve narrowed it down to, I’d definitely suggest James Cook. Whilst James Cook may not rank particularly high overall, I do believe that subjects pertaining to wildlife are one of the uni’s greatest strengths due to its close proximity to the Barrier Reef, as well as rainforests etc. The Townsville campus will be the largest.

There are quite a few beaches to see in Townsville. It’s a great place to relax. It’s warm, and if you like outdoor activities there’s Ross River that runs through the city where you can walk, run, bike ride, fish, or rowboat. Plus there’s lots of places you can go to from Townsville such as Mount Spec – up there you can visit many rivers, rockslides, and go camping. Lots of critters to see, too… there are so many pretty birds and delicious wild raspberries. There are many lovely beaches out of Townsville too, as well as tropical islands including Magnetic Island and Dunk Island. But be warned, you will need a car. The public transport in Townsville isn’t very good, and places you want to go will often be way too far to walk.

Cairns would be a similar environment to Townsville. The only thing I can think of which may be better in Cairns is the shopping. It’s also easier to access the Great Barrier reef from there. But like I said, the James Cook campus in Townsville is the biggest.

All I can say is that Townsville is a great place if you can tolerate the heat and have a car. Also, don’t expect city life.

If you were considering the Gold Coast, why not the University of Queensland in Brisbane? It’s a good uni. Brisbane’s quite big (very spread out) and more culturally diverse than Townsville. Ok public transport too. Beaches may not be as accessible and wildlife slightly more difficult to find, but the education will be of better quality. One other thing to note… the University of Melbourne is the ultimate uni for science in Australia. So if you are seriously considering furthering your studies in zoology after your undergrad, this is the place to be, even though you may not like the colder weather. The reason I’m yapping on about the major universities is because their facilities will be a lot better than the smaller unis’, and there will be more opportunities for postgraduate work and scholarships. But like I said before… if you only plan on doing an undergraduate degree, then there’s no problem in choosing a university according to which environment you prefer.
