Issues in Morphosyntax $180 Of particular interest to morphologists and syntacticians Issues in Morphosyntax aims to contribute to the discussion on the question whether there exists a separate morphological module in the grammar, distinct from the other modules, with special focus on the connection of morphology with syntax. The view that is defended is that morphological operations do not take place in syntax, but that they are governed by the same principles that govern syntax. There are morphological categories distinct from syntactic categories, which appear in their own domain, below the zero X-bar level, so in this sense there is a morphological module. However, this module is not distinct from the syntactic one, in the sense that the same principles apply equally to the morphological and the syntactic domain. Specific topics of discussion include Noun Incorporation, past participle constructions in Germanic (passives, perfects, and auxiliary selection) and Lexical Integrity effects. |

Current Issues in Teacher Education $42.95 In this edited volume by experts in the field of teacher education, Current Issues in Teacher Education combines forces from the United States and Canada to present and discuss positions on current topics and concerns in the field of teacher education. It provides an overview and multiple perspectives of issues rather than one author’s position or viewpoint. This will allow the reader to reflect on multiple perspectives and to form his or her opinion and route for further action or discussion. Divided into four parts, Part I looks at overarching issues, such as preparing for the realities of teaching imposed by state and federal mandates, curriculum delivery models, and worldwide issues. Part II explores issues related to the teacher education institution, such as preservice teacher placement, accreditation, and partnerships. Part III contains chapters on training teachers in multicultural education, technology, assessment, special needs, and family involvement. And, in Part IV, leaders from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education propose ideas for the future of teacher education. Teacher educators who work in the field and/or are involved with professional organizations related to the field will find the book to be useful at the college or university level. Policy Issues in Modern Cartography $177 Modern cartography, as the two earlier volumes of this series on Geographic Information Systems: The Microcomputer and Modern Cartography (Taylor, 1991), and Visualization in Modern Cartography (MacEachren and Taylor, 1994) illustrate, is deeply interested in the technological advances of the information revolution and their impact on the discipline and profession. The vast majority of the growing literature in recent years has dealt with some aspect of technological change. The driving forces of the information era are developments in computer technology and related developments in satellites and telecommunications and these forces have had a fundamental impact on all aspects of cartography. It is understandable that the attention of cartographers has been focussed on technological change, especially in a situation where the speed of that change is so rapid. The half life of knowledge in some areas can now be measured in months, rather than years, and cartographers have been fully occupied with the struggle to adapt to rapidly changing technological circumstances. Computer technologies are now so all pervasive that there is little cartography without them and earlier terms such as digital cartography, automated cartography or computer assisted cartography which emerged in the 1960s and 70s are now anachronistic. What can be described as obsession with technological change has, in the last two decades in particular, led to a relatively narrow “technologized” normative and formalistic approach to cartography and to the relative neglect of the consideration of a wide range of policy issues which are imbedded in the societal context in which modern cartography finds itself. It is to a discussion of policy issues that this book hopes to make a contribution. As with the technology of the information revolution, the policy issues involved are not unique to cartography but several key policy issues are of special interest to cartographers. Some of them, such as copyright and intellectual property rights, are not new but take on new significance as a result of technological changes. Modern cartography has largely come to terms with the technological developments of the information revolution and the considerable adaptations required have been made although in some instances not without considerable difficulty. The same cannot be said, however, for some of the key policy issues discussed in this book. In many instances we are simply at the stage of defining the nature and extent of the problems which is a necessary first step in determining solutions. There are differences in opinion as to what the key policy issues are and how they should be approached. The various chapters of this book reflect these different perspectives. In selecting authors to contribute to the volume an attempt was made to ensure that the major policy issues were dealt with from a variety of different perceptions. An attempt has also been made to achieve a comprehensive |

Understanding Drug Issues $59.95 Praise for the first edition:. ‘…scores above many others is in its layout, particularly from the trainer’s point of view …this publication appears challenging without patronising its audience …an accurate, innovative and practical resource which trainers can either use systematically or selectively depending upon their audience.’. – Probation Journal. ‘…of use to teachers, youth workers, probation officers and indeed any professional having responsibility for groups of young people …it has been of great interest to me as a parent and will be used in my advice to schools and community groups.’. – Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. This fully updated edition of a successful resource succeeds in engaging and involving young people where many other methods of drugs education – including attempts to shock, inform, or promote decision-making – have failed to make a lasting impact. This is largely because they don’t utilize young people’s own views, intelligence and insight. The range of 30 original exercises in this resource is designed to expand and challenge participants’ understanding of the issues surrounding illegal drug use, with activities that will enable them to make active and informed personal judgements about drugs. Understanding Drug Issues features informative and balanced material on all the key issues involved, including: the facts and fiction about drugs; peer pressure; the social consequences of drug use; buying drugs; the dangers involved in using; the pros and cons of drug use; legal implications; the effects of drugs on health. The activities are ideal for use in groups and feature all the latest developments surrounding the use and abuse of drugs, as well as useful contact details for those wanting further help. The material is photocopiable and designed to be used flexibly – for example as worksheets or overhead projections. Understanding Drug Issues is an essential resource that will be valued by teachers, youth workers, probation officers, those working with offenders, and any professionals working with young people. This workbook can be used on its own, or ideally in combination with its companion volume Understanding Drugs: A Handbook for Parents, Teachers and Other Professionals, a complete reference on drugs issues (second edition forthcoming, September 2005). |

Mapping Environmental Issues in the City $129 This book complements the growing body of literature exploring the relationships between arts and cartography. It is distinct from the previous ones by its main focus: the multiple ways of representing a database. In the context of the exponential increase of the volume of geospatial data available, addressing this issue becomes critical and has not yet received much attention. Furthermore, the content of the database – environmental issues in the city – gives a strong social and political texture to the project. The expected audience for this book are academic as well as students interested in the relationships between art and cartography, place and technology, power and representations. This book could serve as an inspiration for local groups and communities dealing with environmental injustice all over the world. Finally, at a local scale, this book could become a major reference for individuals, communities and institutions interested in environmental issues in the city of Montreal. |

Issues in Heart Failure Nursing $11.18 The number of people suffering from this debilitating condition is predicted to grow exponentially over the next decade. This has serious implications for the health services. Investigating heart failure is not cheap even where facilities exist. The drugs used, though effective – often remarkably so – are also costly as are laboratory investigations. These again are not cheap. People with heart failure require frequent admissions to hospital and occupy many beds and much staff attention. All of these factors are set to increase over the next decades. This eclectic collection of papers tackles many of the issues that concern those who care for individuals with heart failure; organisation of services, exercise, palliative care amongst them, but also novel and rarely discussed issues. |

Medicines Issues in Nepal $95.59 As a preliminary project aimed at stimulating further research, this study provides an overview of key issues relating to and influencing healthcare in Nepal, Austria and New Zealand. By looking at health from a broad crosscultural perspective, it provides a basis for further work in the field of social pharmacy as it applies to different medical systems. The thesis explores similarities and differences in the healthcare systems in the three countries with a particular focus on access to healthcare and medicines. It attempts to understand the determinants of health and describes the multiple issues affecting access to healthcare including geography, poverty, gender, minorities and funding. Somewhat surprisingly, it suggests there are fewer differences than expected between Austria and New Zealand as developed countries on the one hand and Nepal as a developing country on the other. Each country seems to be dealing with similar issues despite socioeconomic differences but each is doing so in the context of their specific circumstances and history. The thing about those who breed success, is if you leave them stranded on an Island, instead of them building a canoe to paddle across in no time, they would rather save their energy by becoming conversant with their environment by thinkingSURVIVAL fi rst, thus charging up their instincts as the sea roughens. Understanding Environmental Issues $51 The arena of environmental issues is a minefield for undergraduate students seeking clarity about key problems and solutions. This is where Understanding Environmental Issues will play a major role, providing a stimulating guide through the wealth of material and complex ideas. In particular, the unification of social and physical science in the case studies provides an holistic approach to the subject that is essential for students and a refreshing innovation for environmental textbooks' – Anna R. Davies, Trinity College, University of Dublin. '..provides an excellent foundation for developing critical thinking about contemporary environmental concerns and the ways in which these are debated, represented and managed. The book should achieve its aim of stimulating students to engage with how ideas of sustainability and environmental justice can be applied both in policy and in practical action' – Professor Gordon Walker, Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University. 'Straight outta Uxbridge something special emerged from the grim surroundings of Brunel University, a concrete jungle in the London suburbs, in the 1990s – a passionate, committed group of geographers and geologists with a commitment to innovative pedagogy, to the application of knowledge, and to tackling the big environmental issues of the day.. This book, written by a team that includes at least two media stars, shows that understanding the environment should involve engagement, and reaching out beyond the campus. It also tackles the big issues of the day, and how we value them and approach them as scholars, citizens and activists. A useful set of thematic chapters introduce students to key environmental issues – the food and waste streams, climate change, natural hazards, and urban environments. Highly recommended' – Simon P J Batterbury, School of Resource Management and geography, University of Melbourne and ECI, University of Oxford. 'The book's strengths are to do with the pedagogic backgrounds and commitment of the authors and the spread of expertise revealed. I do like section 1 where some of the big ideas and concepts are explored followed by section 2 where case studies are written by partnerships of scientists and social scientists. The case studies provided are of worldwide environmental significance and the final chapter on Mexico City touches on many of the concepts and cases written about earlier in the text.. A key objective was to stimulate interest and action by the readers – I think it will achieve that and not just for an undergraduate audience. I found it was written and illustrated in an accessible way. Highly recommended' – Professor Ashley Kent, Institute of Education University of London. 'Understanding Environmental Issues will stimulate critical thinking and debate about the inextricable links between the physical and socio-political determinants of our planet's future' – Julian Agyeman, Associate Prof |

Social Issues: Challenges, Opportunities, Innovations $147.5 Social Issues: Challenges, Opportunities, Innovations is an anthology that uses the sociological perspective to enhance understanding of the social, economic, political, and cultural forces that shape social issues in the United States. Based on the premise that not all social issues are social problems, this anthology expands the definition of social issues from problems that need fixing to opportunities for improving what already seems to work. This anthology is not intended to be exhaustive. The articles discuss social inequalities in selected institutional contexts, and were chosen to stimulate readers to think about social issues for which there are no precedents (for example, impacts of the Internet on patterns of communication and interaction), as well as to think about familiar issues in unprecedented ways. Conceptualizing social issues not only as challenges but also as opportunities will hopefully encourage approaches to social issues that are flexible, creative, and innovative.Cheryl B. Leggon, an associate professor in the School of Public Policy at Georgia Institute of Technology, was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for her work on the impact of the intersections of race/ethnicity and gender on science and engineering careers. Also a member of Sigma Xi, she earned a BA in Sociology from Barnard College, Columbia University, and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Author: Leggon, Cheryl B. Ethical Issues in Forensic Psychiatry $78.99 Ethical medical practice and treatment in psychiatry are based on the concept of first do no harm. However, this cannot, and does not, apply to forensic cases where there is no doctor–patient relationship and the forensic psychiatrist may indeed cause harm to the examinee. In this book, Robert Sadoff analyzes the ethical issues affecting forensic psychiatric practice, especially those promulgated by the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Within those guidelines, he looks at individual bias, vulnerability of the examinee, and potential harm to the mental health professional.  The book discusses each of the procedures of the forensic expert separately with respect to minimizing harm. It has been written with an international audience in mind and features chapters reviewing the European and UK perspectives, by Emanuele Valenti and John Baird, respectively. Robert Sadoff addresses the long-term harm that can be either avoided or minimized through careful planning and application of ethical principles. He is not advocating that the harm can be totally eliminated, because that is impossible in the adversarial system in which forensic psychiatrists work. However, there are means by which harm may be minimized if care is taken during the assessment, the report writing, and the testimony phase of the proceedings. The book develops the scope of forensic psychiatry from the standpoint of administrative, civil and criminal cases. It presents the practical issues involved in conducting forensic psychiatric assessments under various conditions plus special considerations, such as bias, minimizing harm, developing a therapeutic approach, and elaborating on various vulnerable individuals who are frequently examined in forensic cases. These include juveniles, mentally retarded, autistic, sexual assault victims, the elderly, the organically damaged, the psychotic, and mentally disabled prisoners. Immigrants are covered in a chapter by Solange Margery Bertoglia. The ethical issues in conducting forensic psychiatric examinations and presenting psychiatric testimony in court are examined and discussed. Cases illustrating the difficulties involved punctuate the presentation. The book closes with a fascinating account of the legal perspective by Donna Vanderpool. In summary, this book illustrates the ethical and practical issues that affect forensic psychiatric practice. The question is not what we do, but how we do it, and which standards, ethical guidelines and personal values contribute to the total picture. Despite the fact that we cannot always adhere to the doctrine of “primum non nocere,” we can minimize the harm caused inherently by the adversarial system in which we participate. Praise for Ethical Issues in Forensic Psychiatry “One of the founding giants of the forensic psychiatric field has written here far more than a “mere” ethics textbook. Instead, this compendium serves multiple purposes: it is a valuable primer on foren |

Critical Issues in Israeli Society $123 Fashioning a working political structure in Israel that will bring together all aspects of society, from Jews to Arabs, ultra-Orthodox to assertively secular, has never been easy. However, two developments have intensified this challenge: demographic changes have sharpened the differences between the groups; and open challenges of legitimacy have undermined the previous de facto acceptance of pluralism. There has been no strong civic framework of Israeliness to replace Zionism as a shared identity that would override more parochial identities and interests. Added to these pressures are the collapse of the peace process in late 2000 and the influence of global developments on the Arab-Israel conflict and on Israeli domestic society. In this volume, twelve noted scholars of Israel present authoritative and analytic overviews of these important issues. The ability of the Israeli political system to bridge differences through a Jewish tradition of power-sharing has, in the past, managed to overcome enormous divisions, at least within the Jewish sector. Economic progress and globalization have brought Israel closer to other developed societies in many respects, while exposing Israel to pressures associated with these trends. Closer analysis of these critical issues reveals that there are also positive forces at work as the nation seeks a broader synthesis of its Jewish legacy and universal liberal values. |

The details of each case are given followed by a summary of major issues and dilemmas that each case presents. Restorative Justice: Critical Issues $90.56 The book embodies a timely collection of restorative justice topics and is well structured with some of the most learned authorities in the field Magistrate The team which teaches the Open Universitys Crime Order and Social Control course has long been publishing teaching materials which are gratefully purloined by colleagues elsewhere for use in their own courses. Issues in Phonological Structure $165 This volume contains revised, expanded and updated versions of papers originally presented at the International Workshop on Phonological Structure held at the University of Durham in September 1994. A number of questions surrounding phonological structure are approached from a wide variety of theoretical standpoints, including the frameworks of prosodic phonology, declarative phonology, optimality theory, metrical phonology, government phonology, feature geometry, particle theory and dependency phonology. This range of viewpoints allows the crossfertilisation of various strands of phonological thinking with respect to many of the central issues concerning phonological structure. The study establishes that signed languages, caught between negative societal perceptions, lethargic language and educational policies and an outdated pedagogy, suffer from a paucity of recognition and development as distinct languages; and the development of instructional/learning materials. To remedy the situation, the negative societal perceptions need to be overhauled to recognize signed languages as distinctive languages to be used in teaching and learning backed by sound language and educational policies as well as grounded pedagogical approach utilising relevant instructional/learning materials. Ethical Issues and Guidelines in Psychology $11.69 How do we know right from wrong, good from bad, help from hindrance, and how can we judge the behaviour of others? Ethics are the rules and guidelines that we use to make such judgements. Often there are no clear answers, which make this subject both interesting and potentially frustrating. In this book the authors offer readers the opportunity to develop and express their own opinions in relation to ethics in psychology. There are a number of famous many psychological studies that appear to have been harmful or cruel to the people or animals who took part in them. For example, memory researchers carried out studies on a man who had no memory for over forty years, but because he had no memory, he was never able to agree to the studies. Is this a reasonable thing to do to someone? Comparative psychologist Harry Harlow found that he could create severe and lasting distress in monkeys by keeping them in social isolation. Is this a reasonable thing to do even if we find out useful things about human distress? If you were able to use psychological techniques to break someone down so that they revealed information that was useful to your government would you do it? If so, why and if not, why not? These ethical issues are not easy to resolve and the debates continue as we encounter new dilemmas. The book uses many examples of psychological research to look at key ethical issues ethical guidelines of psychologists socially sensitive research ethics in applied psychology the use of animals in research This book will be essential reading for and undergraduate and pre-undergraduate students studying psychology and students of other subjects concerned with ethics. |

Social Issues in Television Fiction $99.5 Why are some controversial issues covered in TV soaps and dramas and not others? How are decisions really made ‘behind the scenes’? How do programme makers push boundaries without losing viewers? What do audiences take away from their viewing experience? Does TV fiction have a greater impact on public understandings than TV news? This exciting new book draws on unique empirical data to examine the relationship between popular television fiction and wider society. The book gives lively and engaging insights into how and why socially sensitive story lines were taken up by different TV programmes from the late 1980s to the 2000s. Drawing on a series of case studies of medicine, health, illness and social problems including breast cancer, mental distress, sexual abuse and violence it comprehensively traces the path of storylines from initial conception through to audience reception and uses contemporary examples to link practice to theory. Orthopaedic Issues in Osteoporosis $189.95 Orthopaedic procedures in elderly patients are challenging and costly. As the population ages these costs will continue to escalate. ORTHOPAEDIC ISSUES IN OSTEOPOROSIS weaves together theory and applications to provide the first reference available on the orthopaedic aspects of osteoporosis. The focus on the management of patients who have had a fracture sets this book apart. Featuring extensive coverage of surgical management of osteoporotic fractures, it highlights the challenges of internal repair in osteoporotic bone. The chapters combine the basic and clinical essentials of osteoporosis with the latest orthopaedic findings in applied research and surgical treatment. Fractures associated with osteoporosis account for the majority of the money spent on this condition. However, the orthpaedic treatment of osteoporotic bone is a formidable surgical problem, and one not covered explicitly in any book – until now. With over 300 tables, line drawings, equations, and macro or X-ray photographs, ORTHOPAEDIC ISSUES IN OSTEOPOROSIS is a long overdue resource. About the Editor: Yuehuei H. (Huey) An, MD, graduated from the Harbin Medical University, Harbin, Northeast China in 1983 and was trained in orthopaedic surgery at the Beijing Ji Shui Tan Hospital (Residency), and in hand surgery at Sydney Hospital (Clinical Fellow), Australia. In 1991, Dr. An joined with Dr. Richard J. Friedman in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina to establish the MUSC Orthopaedic Research Laboratory, which is now a multifunctional orthopaedic research center. Dr. An has published more than 100 scientific papers and book chapters and more than 100 abstracts and edited 6 books, including Animal Models in Orthopaedic Research (CRC Press 1999) and Mechanical Testing of Bone and the Bone-Implant Interface (CRC Press 2000). Issues in Bioinvasion Science $79.95 Biological invasions are a global problem whose local impact can be of great magnitude. The prevention and minimization of the impact of invasive alien species has become a priority because of their negative impact on biodiversity, economy and public health. Effective responses are needed; cooperation and coordination among countries and/or different sectors of society are a must. To combine and share experiences on biological invasions at international, regional and local level it is essential to develop compatible approaches to common problems. With this aim, the GEI (Grupo Especies Invasoras) organised the First National Conference on Invasive Alien Species in Spain in 2003. Scientists coming from different parts of the Iberian Peninsula belonging to universities, public administration, NGOs and environmental enterprises and world-renowned experts on biological invasions from other countries responded to this “call for action” and participated in the conference. Issues in Bioinvasion Science contains key contributions of this conference. The themes included cut across different aspects of non-native species invasions. This volume is essential reading for anyone seeking an understanding of non-native species invasions. |

Aboriginal Autonomy: Issues and Strategies $84.44 After more than two hundred years, one of the most important moral issues facing Australian society in the 1990s remains the need for reconciliation with its indigenous people. In this selection of essays, H. C. Coombs reflects on the nature of Aboriginal identity and the importance of autonomy for Australiaas Aboriginal people. He also suggests strategies by which selfdetermination might be achieved in practice. Dr Coombs writes with the conviction that mainstreama Australia stands to gain as much, if not more, than Aboriginal people from the fulfilment of Aboriginal aspirations. It is a personal and passionate plea for a just society, from one of white Australias most influential and eloquent advocates of selfdetermination for its indigenous people. Author: Coombs, H. Contemporary Issues in Modeling of Psychopathology $317.03 Despite considerable progress in clinical and basic neurosciences, the cure of psychiatric disorders is still remote, little is known about their prevention, and the etiology and molecular mechanisms of mental disorders are still obscure. Diagnoses are still guided by patients stories. The mission of animal models is to bridge the gap between the story and the synapse. Contemporary Issues in Modeling of Psychopathology attempts to do this by examining such questions as What good might come from such a model? Are we wasting our time? Ethical Issues in the Psychotherapies $109.01 Mental health professionals face many complex questions in the course of their work with clients and patients. Among the most difficult are dilemmas that involve ethical issues. This book presents a forthright exploration of these dilemmas and the ethical considerations they raise. How can the therapist make an accurate assessment of his or her appropriateness as a care provider for a particular patient? What about confidentiality? How are problematic financial arrangements best addressed? The author goes on to show how these dilemmas may be intensified by the unique assumptions of different therapeutic orientationsindividual, group, family, marital, and organizationaland how professionals can learn from such experiences to better understand and apply their particular approach. Confronting Equity Issues on Campus $27.99 How can it be that 50 years after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, our institutions of higher education have still not found ways of reducing the education gaps for racial and ethnic groups? That is the question that informs and animates the Equity Scorecard model of organizational change. It shifts institutions’ focus from what students do (or fail to do) to what institutions can do—through their practices and structures, as well as the actions of their leaders and faculty— to produce equity in outcomes for racially marginalized populations. Drawing on organizational learning theory and the methods of action research, it creates a structure for practitioners to become investigators of their own institutional culture, to become aware of racial disparities, confront their own practices and learn how things are done on their own turf to ask: In what ways are my practices contributing to equity/inequity? The Equity Scorecard model differs significantly from traditional approaches to effecting change by creating institutional teams to examine and discuss internal data about student outcomes, disaggregated by race and ethnicity. The premise of the project is that institutional data acts as a powerful trigger for group learning about inequities in educational outcomes, and that the likelihood of improving those outcomes increases if the focus is on those things within the immediate control of the participating leaders and practitioners. Numerous institutions have successfully used The Equity Scorecard’s data tools and processes of self-reflection to uncover and document the behaviors and structures that lead to failure to retain graduate students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds with a history of unequal opportunity; and to create the climate for faculty and staff to take ownership of the issues and develop sustainable practices to eliminate racial disparities in academic performance. The Scorecard can be used at a small-scale to analyze individual cou |

Current Issues in Generative Hebrew Linguistics $165 This volume presents a collection of specially commissioned papers devoted to analyzing the linguistics of Modern Hebrew from a number of perspectives. Various aspects of Modern Hebrew grammar are discussed including the structure of the lexicon, grammatical features and inflectional morphology, as well as the grammaticalization of semantic and pragmatic distinctions. The psycholinguistic issues addressed include the acquisition of morphological knowledge, the pro-drop parameter and question formation, as well as language use in hearing-impaired native speakers. The collection of these papers together in a single volume allows these phenomena to be considered not in isolation but in the context of the grammatical system of which the language is an expression. As a consequence, more general issues connected to Modern Hebrew begin to emerge, such as the role of the inflectional morphological system in the grammar, and a rich set of facts and analyses relevant for many related issues are made available to the reader. |

Attachment Issues in Psychopathology and Intervention $29.99 To be a human being (or indeed to be a primate) is to be attached to other fellow beings in relationships, from infancy on. This book examines what happens when the mechanisms of early attachment go awry, when caregiver and child do not form a relationship in which the child finds security in times of uncertainty and stress. Although John Bowlby, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, originally formulated attachment theory for the express purpose of understanding psychopathology across the life span, the concept of attachment was first adopted by psychologists studying typical development. In recent years, clinicians have rediscovered the potential of attachment theory to help them understand psychological/psychiatric disturbance, a potential that has now been amplified by decades of research on typical development. Attachment Issues in Psychopathology and Intervention is the first book to offer a comprehensive overview of the implications of current attachment research and theory for conceptualizing psychopathology and planning effective intervention efforts. It usefully integrates attachment considerations into other frameworks within which psychopathology has been described and points new directions for investigation. The contributors, who include some of the major architects of attachment theory, link what we have learned about attachment to difficulties across the life span, such as failure to thrive, social withdrawal, aggression, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, dissociation, trauma, schizo-affective disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, eating disorders, and comorbid disorders. While all chapters are illuminated by rich case examples and discuss intervention at length, half focus solely on interventions informed by attachment theory, such as toddler-parent psychotherapy and emotionally focused couples therapy. Mental health professionals and researchers alike will find much in this book to stimulate and facilitate effective new approaches to their work. |

‘Never Had the Like Occurred’ $38.14 Never Had the Like Occurred’ examines Ancient Egypt’s own multifaceted encounters with its past. As Egyptian culture constantly changed and evolved, this book follows a chronological arrangement, from early Egypt to the attitudes of the Coptic population in the Byzantine Period. Within this framework, it asks what access the Egyptians had to information about the past, whether deliberately or accidentally acquired; what use was made of the past; what were the Egyptians attitudes to the past; what sense of past time did the Egyptians have; and what kinds of reverence for the past did they entertain? This is the first book dedicated to the whole range of these themes. It provides an explanatory context for the numerous previous studies that have dealt with particular sets of evidence, particular periods, or particular issues. It provides a case study of how civilizations may view and utilize their past. |

‘injuns!’ $16 The indispensable sage, fierce enemy, silent sidekick: the role of Native Americans in film has been largely confined to identities defined by the white perspective. Many studies have analyzed these simplistic stereotypes of Native American cultures in film, but few have looked beyond the Hollywood Western for further examples. Distinguished film scholar Edward Buscombe offers here an incisive study that examines cinematic depictions of Native Americans from a global perspective. Buscombe opens with a historical survey of American Westerns and their controversial portrayals of Native Americans: the wild redmen of nineteenth-century Wild West shows, the more sympathetic depictions of Native Americans in early Westerns, and the shift in the American film industry in the 1920s to hostile characterizations of Indians. Questioning the implicit assumptions of prevailing critiques, Buscombe looks abroad to reveal a distinctly different portrait of Native Americans. He focuses on the lesser known Westerns made in Germany such as East Germany s Indianerfilme, in which Native Americans were Third World freedom fighters battling against Yankee imperialists as well as the films based on the novels of nineteenth-century German writer Karl May. These alternative portrayals of Native Americans offer a vastly different view of their cultural position in American society. Buscombe offers nothing less than a wholly original and readable account of the cultural images of Native Americans through history andaround the globe, revealing new and complex issues in our understanding of how oppressed peoples have been represented in mass culture. |
