Magician John

Biography Report Ideas?
I already did a biography report on John Lennon, for musician biographies, and I want to do a biography on a different person other than a musician. Such as fashion designers, authors, historical figures, magicians, or anyone interesting.
Thanks!!! My laptop wouldn’t let me catigorize it in the education section if your wondering why it is in the authors section.

Magician (Paranormal) $125.85 A magician is a person skilled in the mysterious and hidden art of magic, the ability to attain objectives, acquire knowledge, or perform works of wonder using supernatural or nonrational means. Some modern magicians, such as Aleister Crowley and those who follow the traditions of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Ordo Templi Orientis, describe magic in rational terms, using definitions, postulates and theorems. Aleister Crowley said the magician of the future will use mathematical formulas. The latter kind of magician can also be referred to as an enchanter, sorcerer, wizard, mage, magus, or thaumaturgist. These overlapping terms may be distinguished by some traditions or some writers. When such distinctions are made, sorcerers are more often practitioners of evocations or black magic, and there may be variations on level and type of power associated with each name. Some names, distinctions, or aspects may have more of a negative connotation than others, depending on the setting and the context. Author: Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John/ Miller, Frederic P. Magician of the Modern $22.99 The story of Chick Austin is the story, in Virgil Thomson’s words, of "a whole cultural movement in one man." Becoming director of Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum at the age of twenty-six, Austin immediately set about to introduce modern art to America and to transform this conservative insurance capital into a cultural mecca that would become the talk of the art world during the yeasty years between the two world wars. The first in the United States to mount a major Picasso retrospective, Austin was soon acquiring works by Dalí, Mondrian, Miró, Balthus, Max Ernst, and Alexander Calder. In the museum’s new theater (which he designed), he staged the premiere of the revolutionary Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson opera Four Saints in Three Acts (with an all-black cast). At Lincoln Kirstein’s instigation, he brought Balanchine to America. And he embraced all the new art forms, making film, photography, architecture, and contemporary music part of the life of his museum. For his own family he built a Palladian villa (now a recently restored national historic landmark), filling it with the baroque and the Bauhaus and inviting all the locals in to see how it felt to be modern. Austin’s instinct for quality proved infallible. Whether acquiring a matchless Caravaggio or a startling Dalí, he balanced the old masters with the modern. Mounting provocative shows that linked the past to the present, he created dramatic installations–and he threw himself into everything, hanging fabrics, creating backdrops, stitching up costumes. He loved to teach, to paint, to act, to give lavish costume balls, and to dazzle audiences of all ages with his performances as a magician, the Great Osram. Brilliant at using his magician’s sleight of hand, he could manipulate his conservative trustees to get what he wanted–but only up to a point. One more purchase of an incomprehensible abstract canvas, one outrageous party too many, one more shocking theatrical role, eventually led to a crisis. Never one to be idle for long, Austin left Hartford and took on a new challenge–to make an artistic triumph of the pink-and-white palace in Sarasota, Florida, known as the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, which housed the circus king’s moldering but magnificent collection. Here is the colorful life of Chick Austin, and as we relish his audacious career–the risks he took, the successes he enjoyed along with the inevitable setbacks–we understand what a far-reaching influence he had on the way Americans look at and think about art. Not only a brilliant portrait of an extraordinary man, this wonderfully American story gives us a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into the art world as it was then–and in many ways still is today. From the Hardcover edition. |

The Magician’s Book $9.99 THE MAGICIAN’S BOOK is the story of one reader’s long, tumultuous relationship with C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia . Enchanted by its fantastic world as a child, prominent critic Laura Miller returns to the series as an adult to uncover the source of these small books’ mysterious power by looking at their creator, Clive Staples Lewis. What she discovers is not the familiar, idealized image of the author, but a more interesting and ambiguous truth: Lewis’s tragic and troubled childhood, his unconventional love life, and his intense but ultimately doomed friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien. Finally reclaiming Narnia “for the rest of us,” Miller casts the Chronicles as a profoundly literary creation, and the portal to a life-long adventure in books, art, and the imagination. |

Quentin and his friends are now the kings and queens of Fillory, but the days and nights of royal luxury are starting to pall. Lewis, and the cutting edge of literary fantasy. |

Following an enigmatic summons to Rome, Rosemont finds himself at the center of a mystery that dates back to the fall of Troy, the pursuit of a mystical treasure many are willing to sacrifice fortunes and lives for: the earliest known tarot deck. As Rosemont delves deeper and deeper into the tarot’s unsettling secret origins, his own fate is inexorably intertwined with that of the Boy King, a homeless man with an unspeakable giftand a mysterious past of his own. For these two men and the demons, dupes, and power seekers drawn to them the cards will reveal everything, even the shattering, unseen truths of human life itself. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

Inhaling the Spore-Journey Through the Museum of Jurassic $16.74 Behind a storefront in Los Angeles is one of the most unusual cultural institutions in America – The Museum of Jurassic Technology. It s a modern-day cabinet of curiosities, filled with juxtapositions of the genuine, the strange, and the truly unexplainable. Inhaling the Spore is an intimate journey through the MJT , and features its founder and director David Wilson, who can often be found in front of the museum, playing his accordion to attract visitors.Entering the museum, the camera winds through a dark warren of spaces. Behind glass are various exhibits presented with the normal trappings of a museum – exhaustive captions, hushed lighting, and scholarly audio programs. With Wilson as our guide, we see:–A collection of horns and antlers, including one that purports to be a human horn.–Micro-miniature sculptures of Napoleon and the Pope, each carved from a human hair, and mounted in the eye of a needle.-An elaborate exhibit about the bat Myotis lucifugus, or piercing devil which is believed to fly through solid objects.Yes, there is something very odd going on here, questioning our usual assumptions of what is real or not.We turn to some outside experts for analysis: Author Lawrence Weschler relates his experiences trying to verify some of the MJT s exhibits; the J. Paul Getty Museum’s John Walsh compares it to the first museums of the 17th century; art historian Barbara Stafford observes that Wilson s exhibits invite us to see the hidden associations between objects; and actor/magician Ricky Jay discusses his on-loan collection of desiccating dice.Museum director David Wilson views one particular exhibit as a metaphor for the entire enterprise. The African Stink Ant inhales the spore of a parasitic fungus that causes it to behave in curious and irrational ways. Eventually the fungus grows, horn-like, from the ant s head, and rains down new spores to the forest floor. All of us here at the museum feel like we’ve inhaled that spore, says Wilson, and ho |

Prelude to Civil War $32.25 When William Freehling’s Prelude to Civil War first appeared in 1965 it was immediately hailed as a brilliant and incisive study of the origins of the Civil War. Book Week called it fresh, exciting, and convincing, while The Virginia Quarterly Review praised it as, quite simply, history atits best. It was equally well-received by historical societies, garnering the Allan Nevins History Prize as well as a Bancroft Prize, the most prestigious history award of all. Now once again available, Prelude to Civil War is still the definitive work on the subject, and one of the most importantin ante-bellum studies. It tells the story of the Nullification Controversy in South Carolina, describing how from 1816 to 1836 aristocratic planters of the Palmetto State tumbled from a contented and prosperous life of elegant balls and fine Madeira wines to a world rife with economic distress, guilt over slavery, and apprehension of slave rebellion. It shows in compelling detail how this reversal of fortune led the political leaders of South Carolina down the path to ever more radical states rights doctrines: in 1832 they were seeking to nullify federal law by refusing to obey it; four years later some ofthem were considering secession. As the story unfolds, we meet a colorful and skillfully drawn cast of characters, among them John C. These and other important figures come to life in these pages, and help to tell a tale–often intheir own words–central to an understanding of the war which eventually engulfed the United States. The Average American $1.21 Traveling from New York to Nevada, Pennsylvania to Hawaii, Kansas to Connecticut and beyond, the author delivers a fascinating, often surprising, look into the history and culture of the common man and woman. At the end, he discovers the Average American is rather extraordinary. From The Publisher:John Q Public. Plain Jane. The Average Joe. We think we know the type, but have we ever actually met the person? To be the perfectly average American is harder than it might seem: You must live within three miles of a McDonald’s, and two miles of a public park; you must be better off financially than your parents, but earn no more than $75,000 a year; you must believe in God and the literal truth of the Bible, yet hold some views that traditional churches have deemed sacrilegious.Equipped with his trusty Mr. Q, a notebook that he has compiled with over 1,000 facts about the Average American, Kevin O’Keefe has completed a tour of America in search of the sublimely ordinary, the man or woman who represents most definitively all that is average in our country. In his travels from New York to Nevada, Pennsylvania to Hawaii, Kansas to Connecticut and beyond, O’Keefe talks business and pleasure with the proprietors of Average Joe and Jane Athletics, visits the polls on election day with the first candidate for the Average American party, bypasses both Peoria and Normal, Illinois (for, as he explains, they are not that normal), watches the magician Myklar the Ordinary wow the kids at a church in rural Maryland, and delivers a fascinating, often surprising, look into the history and culture of the common man and woman. At the end of the road he discovers that the Average American is, up close, rather extraordinary.About The Author:Kevin O’Keefe has held several high-profile management posts in the professional sports industry and has served as a media and marketing consultant for over a dozen Fortune 500 companies. Also a magazine reporter, he now r |
