Motherhood and Feminism $14.95 How does feminism relate to motherhood, how has it changed over time, and what does the future of motherhood and feminism look like? These are just some of the questions Amber E. Kinser, PhD, tackles in this latest addition to the Seal Studies Series. Motherhood and Feminism examines the role of feminism within motherhood—a topic that has garnered a lot of attention lately as society shifts to adapt to new definitions of these roles—and offers insight into the core questions of motherhood: what it means to be a good mother, what role mothers play in the family and in society, and how motherhood has been redefined throughout time. Kinser also speculates on the future directions of feminism—focusing on the expansion of contemporary mother activism that has occurred in the last 15 years, and emphasizing the need for that expansion to continue—and examines how the changing world of motherhood fits into feminist activism. |

Are you looking for an outlet for self-expression, but can’t imagine how you could juggle one more thing? In Writing Motherhood , longtime writing teacher Lisa Garrigues dispels the myth that motherhood is an impediment to creativity. Drawing on her own efforts to balance the demands of motherhood with her dream of writing, she shows readers how everyday life can be a rich source of stories, and how writing can provide a means to both understand and document their experiences. Whether you are a new mother or a grandmother, someone who has long aspired to write or someone who has never written before, Writing Motherhood will help you find your voice and tap into your creative self. Filled with insight, honesty, and humor, each chapter of Writing Motherhood weaves together stories from the author’s life with wisdom from other writers and mothers. In daily writing Invitations, Lisa then encourages readers to tell their own stories. Along the way, she reveals how to: Start and fill a Mother’s Notebook — in just fifteen minutes a day. Silence the critical voices that stifle creativity. Throw away the rules that bind the imagination. Carve out the time and space for writing. Find a community of other mothers who want to write. Beautifully written and thought-provoking, this inviting and inspiring book will strike a chord with any mother looking to explore and reflect on her experience of motherhood. Here she will discover that mothering provides endless material for writing at the same time that writing brings clarity and wisdom to mothering. Writing Motherhood is an essential guide for mothers at every age and stage of life. |

Motherhood and Representation $66.83 From novels of the nineteenth century to films of the 1990s, American culture, abounds with images of white, middleclass mothers. In Motherhood and Representation, E. Ann Kaplan considers how the mother appears in three related spheres: the historical, in which she charts changing representations of the mother from 1830 to the postmodernist present; the psychoanalytic, which discusses theories of the mother from Freud to Lacan and the French Feminists; and the mother as she is figured in cultural representations: in literary and film texts such as East Lynne, Marnie and the The Handmaids Tale, as well as in journalism and popular manuals on motherhood. Kaplans analysis identifies two dominant paradigms of the mother as Angel and Witch, and charts the contesting and often contradictory discourses of the mother in presentday America. Author: Kaplan, E. Ann/ Kaplam, E. Ann/ Kaplan E., Ann Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 272 Publication Date: 1992/06/05 Language: English Dimensions: 9.25 x 6.22 x 0.71 inches |

Impossible Motherhood $15.95 Irene Vilar was just a pliant young college undergraduate in thrall to her professor when they embarked on a relationship that led to marriage—a union of impossible odds—and fifteen abortions in fifteen years. Vilar knows that she is destined to be misunderstood, that many will see her nightmare as an instance of abusing a right, of using abortion as a means of birth control. But it isn’t that. The real story is part of an awful secret, shrouded in shame, colonialism, self-mutilation, and a family legacy that features a heroic grandmother, a suicidal mother, and two heroin-addicted brothers. It is a story that looks back on her traumatic childhood growing up in the shadow of her mother’s death and the footsteps of her famed grandmother, the political activist Lolita Lebrón, and a history that touches on American exploitation and reproductive repression in Puerto Rico. Vilar seamlessly weaves together past, present, and future, channeling a narrative that is at once dramatic and subtle. Impossible Motherhood is a heartrending and ultimately triumphant testimonial told by a writer looking back on her history of addiction. Abortion has never offered any honest person easy answers. Vilar’s dark journey through self-inflicted wounds, compulsive patterns, and historical hauntings is a powerful story of loss and mourning that bravely delves into selfhood, national identity, reproductive freedom, family responsibility, and finally motherhood itself—today, Vilar is the mother of two beautiful children. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

Motherhood in the Balance $20 “Juggling the daily demands of career and motherhood is challenging for many of today’s working women. When the question of spirituality is raised they may feel as if they’ve dropped the ball. In Dance Lessons, Catherine Wallace recounts her ordinary, and often hilarious endeavors to stay sane as she learns to balance the demands of her career with the needs of her family, while adeptly describing the struggles of her relationship with God. Wallace examines her own encounters with a witty and persistent God who thinks that the real problem is not career-vs-kids, but call. This stand-off begins to crumble when a truce is called and the author realizes that nothing can separate us from the love of God.” |

Dangerous Motherhood $100 Dangerous Motherhood is the first study of the close and complex relationship between mental disorder and childbirth. Exploring the relationship between women, their families and their doctors reveals how explanations for the onset of puerperal insanity were drawn from a broad set of moral, social and environmental frameworks, rather than being bound to ideas that women as a whole were likely to be vulnerable to mental illness. The horror of this devastating disorder which upturned the household, turned gentle mothers into disruptive and dangerous mad women, was magnified by it occurring at a time when it was anticipated that women would be most happy in the fulfillment of their role as mothers. |

Unsafe Motherhood $85 Since 1987, when the global community first recognized the high frequency of women in developing countries dying from pregnancy-related causes, little progress has been made to combat this problem. This study follows the global policies that have been implemented in Solol, Guatemala in order to decrease high rates of maternal mortality among indigenous Mayan women. The author examines the diverse meanings and understandings of motherhood, pregnancy, birth and birth-related death among the biomedical personnel, village women, their families, and midwives. These incongruous perspectives, in conjunction with the implementation of such policies, threaten to disenfranchise clients from their own cultural understandings of self. The author investigates how these policies need to meld with the everyday lives of these women, and how the failure to do so will lead to a failure to decrease maternal deaths globally. Nicole S. Berry is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia.isFraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia. |

Sociology of Motherhood $93.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The sociology of motherhood is a sub branch of sociology which studies gender role in society, with particular reference to the parental role of the mother. In many cultures, especially traditional western, a mother is usually the wife in a married couple. Her role in the family is celebrated on Mothers Day. Anna Reeves Jarvis was a woman who originally organized Mothers Work Days protesting the lack of cleanliness and sanitation in the work place. Anna died in 1905 and her daughter created a National Mothers Day to honor her mother. Mothers frequently have a very important role in raising offspring and the title can be given to a nonbiological mother that fills this role. This is common in stepmothers (female married to biological father). In most family structures the mother is both a biological parent and a primary caregiver. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Motherhood in the Twenty-First Century $28.78 This book takes a fresh look at women in their maternal role. In the 21st century, with its frenzy and heterogeneity, where the mixture of modernity and post-modernity is not without danger, motherhood cannot escape the impact of social and cultural transformations. Psycho-history, the accumulation and variety of psychoanalytic theories of femininity and motherhood, the contribution of gender studies, cross-disciplinary research, and listening to what our patients have to say – all this has yielded, in the past few decades, much controversial data that challenges orthodox classical thinking with respect to the role and function of women as mothers. |
