While following directions on a treasure map, a pirate walks 45.0m north and then turns and walks 7.5m east. What single straight-line displacement could the pirate have taken to reach the treasure?
Please show the work & how you did it. I want to actually know how to do it & understand it & not just have the answer. Thanks.
Choose your scale and draw 45m along y-axis starting from the origin. Where this line stops draw a line along the x-axis to represent 7.5m. Go back to the origin and draw a line from the origin to where the 7.5m line ended. This is the single-line displacement the pirate could have taken to reach the treasure. Since the angle between the 45m line and the 7.5m line is 90degs, the magnitude of this line is found from the pythagorean theorem. Therefore the displacement is:
sqrt((45m)^2 + (7.5m)^2) = 45.6m.
