Beatrix Potter $9.99 Peter Rabbit, Mr. McGregor, and many other Beatrix Potter characters remain in the hearts of millions. However, though Potter is a household name around the world, few know the woman behind the illustrations. Her personal life, including a romantic relationship with her publisher, Norman Warne, and her significant achievements outside of children’s literature remain largely unknown. In Linda Lear’s enchanting new biography, we get the life story of this incredible, funny, and independent woman. As one of the first female naturalists in the world, Potter brought the beauty and importance of nature back into the imagination at a time when plunder was more popular than preservation. Through her art she sought to encourage conservation and change the world. With never before seen illustrations and intimate detail, Lear goes beyond our perrenial fascination with Potter as a writer and illustrator of children’s books, and delves deeply into the life of a most unusual and gifted woman–one whose art was timeless, and whose generosity left an indelible imprint on the countryside. |

Mr. Potter $6.99 The story of an ordinary man, his century, and his home: “Kincaid’s most poetic and affecting novel to date” (Robert Antoni, The Washington Post Book World) Jamaica Kincaid’s first obssession, the island of Antigua, comes vibrantly to life under the gaze of Mr. Potter, an illiterate taxi chauffeur who makes his living along the roads that pass through the only towns he has ever seen and the graveyard where he will be buried. The sun shines squarely overhead, the ocean lies on every side, and suppressed passion fills the air. Ignoring the legacy of his father, a poor fisherman, and his mother, who committed suicide, Mr. Potter struggles to live at ease amid his surroundings: to purchase a car, to have girlfriends, and to shake off the encumbrance of his daughters—one of whom will return to Antigua after he dies and tell his story with equal measures of distance and sympathy. In Mr. Potter , Kincaid breathes life into a figure unlike any other in contemporary fiction, an individual consciousness emerging gloriously out of an unexamined life. |

Reading Harry Potter $70 J. K. Rowling achieved astounding commercial success with her series of novels about Harry Potter, the boy-wizard who finds out about his magical powers on the morning of his eleventh birthday. The books' incredible popularity, and the subsequent likelihood that they are among this generation's most formative narratives, call for critical exploration and study to interpret the works' inherent tropes and themes. The essays in this collection assume that Rowling's works should not be relegated to the categories of pulp fiction or children's trends, which would deny their certain influence on the intellectual, emotional, and psychosocial development of today's children. The variety of contributions allows for a range of approaches and interpretive methods in exploring the novels, and reveals the deeper meanings and attitudes towards justice, education, race, foreign cultures, socioeconomic class, and gender. Following an introductory discussion of the Harry Potter phenomenon are essays considering the psychological and social-developmental experiences of children as mirrored in Rowling's novels. Next, the works' literary and historical contexts are examined, including the European fairy tale tradition, the British abolitionist movement, and the public-school story genre. A third section focuses on the social values underlying the Potter series and on issues such as morality, the rule of law, and constructions of bravery. |

Who Invited Harry Potter? $132.24 Myths about heroes involve early parental loss, mentors, battles against evil, and nightsea journeys during which selfawareness deepens. J.K. Rowlings books about the hero, Harry Potter, share these plot similarities, while they engender phenomenal attention and commercial success. Using the methods of depth psychological analysis, this book asks, Who needs Harry Potter, with his adventures, challenges with evil and decision making? We have invited Harry, and he has shown up. This work posits that the archetypal images within the novels represent connections to the collective unconscious, and offer meaningful commentary about love, loss, and transformation in contemporary culture. Throughout the chapters, excerpts from Rowlings books and other works of literature illustrate theories of childhood development, grief and loss, evil, and the archetypal. Jungs theories about the shadow provide a framework for understanding Harrys emerging self, warts and all, as well as the personality of the antagonist, Voldemort. Enlightening research and reading for educators, psychotherapists, and Harry Potter fans, especially for those who believe in the power of story to transform. If Harry Potter Ran General Electric $14.99 However important the magic of wands, brooms, cauldrons, potions, and spells might be to the vivid story telling of [the Harry Potter] books, it is merely incidental to their philosophy of life…. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard someone in a business context say something like “I wish I could just magically solve all these problems” or “I’ll try my best to deal with this, but remember, I’m no magician.” What is particularly interesting is that the most difficult problems that the people in Harry’s world face are rarely solved with just magic, but rather by the use of intelligence, reasoning, planning, courage, determination, persistence, resourcefulness, creativity, fidelity, friendship, and many other qualities traditionally known by the philosophers in our world as virtues…. The meaning of life is not to be found in elixirs or incantations, secret words or exotic objects with esoteric powers, but in real moral virtue and the magic of what it can help us do….” J. K. Rowling’s novels about Harry Potter and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry have captured the imaginations of people everywhere. In IF HARRY POTTER RAN GENERAL ELECTRIC, bestselling business author Tom Morris (IF ARISTOTLE RAN GENERAL MOTORS) uncovers the values and timeless truths that underlie Rawling’s hugely popular books and illuminate the lessons they offer to all of us in our careers and daily lives. But, you say, Harry Potter lives in a world of magic? What can we possibly learn to apply to our own careers and everyday lives? Morris shows that the most difficult problems Harry and his friends face are rarely solved by the use of magic alone. Rather, they are conquered by intelligence, reasoning, determination, creativity, friendship, and a host of other classic virtues–the very qualities, in fact, that make for success in every aspect of our lives. Blending an array of provocative examples from the novels with thought-provoking commentary on contemporary management practices, IF HARRY POTTER RAN GENERAL ELECTRIC offers readers a master’s course on leadership and ethics, told in an engaging and insightful way. |

The Great Big Treasury of Beatrix Potter (Dodo Press) $19.62 (Helen) Beatrix Potter (18661943) was an English author, illustrator, mycologist, and conservationist who was best known for her childrens books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit. Educated at home by a succession of governesses, she had little opportunity to mix with other children. Potter had frogs and newts, and even a pet bat. The basis of her many projects and stories were the small animals that she smuggled into the house or observed during family holidays in Scotland and the Lake District. She was encouraged to publish her story, The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902), but she struggled to find a publisher until it was accepted when she was 36, by Frederick Warne Co. The small book and her following works were extremely well received and she gained an independent income from the sales. Potter eventually wrote 23 books. These were published in a small format, easy for a child to hold and read. Her writing efforts abated around 1920 due to poor eyesight. Israel Potter: Fifty Years of Exile $24.3 Herman Melville (18191891) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. His first two books gained much attention, though they were not bestsellers, and his popularity declined precipitously only a few years later. By the time of his death he had been almost completely forgotten, but his longest novel, MobyDick; or, The Whale (1851) largely considered a failure during his lifetime, and most responsible for Melvilles fall from favor with the reading public was rediscovered in the 20th century as one of the chief literary masterpieces of both American and world literature. Melville is less well known as a poet and did not publish poetry until late in life. Other works include Typee (1846), Omoo (1847), Mardi and a Voyage Thither (2v/1849), Redburn: His First Voyage (1849), WhiteJacket (1850), Pierre (1852), Israel Potter: Fifty Years of Exile (1855), The Piazza Tales (1856), Benito Cereno (1856), BattlePieces and Aspects of the War (1866), Timoleon (1891), The AppleTree Table (1922), John Marr and Other Poems (1922), The ConfidenceMan: His Masquerade (1923), Billy Budd (1924), and Journal up the Straits (1935). If Harry Potter Ran General Electric: Leadership Wisdom from the World of the Wizards $15.09 However important the magic of wands brooms cauldrons potions and spells might be to the vivid story telling of [the Harry Potter] books it is merely incidental to their philosophy of life. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard someone in a business context say something like "I wish I could just magically solve all these problems" or "I’ll try my best to deal with this but remember I’m no magician." What is particularly interesting is that the most difficult problems that the people in Harry’s world face are rarely solved with just magic but rather by the use of intelligence reasoning planning courage determination persistence resourcefulness creativity fidelity friendship and many other qualities traditionally known by the philosophers in our world as virtues. The meaning of life is not to be found in elixirs or incantations secret words or exotic objects with esoteric powers but in real moral virtue and the magic of what it can help us do." J. K. Rowling’s novels about Harry Potter and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry have captured the imaginations of people everywhere. In IF HARRY POTTER RAN GENERAL ELECTRIC bestselling business author Tom Morris (IF ARISTOTLE RAN GENERAL MOTORS) uncovers the values and timeless truths that underlie Rawling’s hugely popular books and illuminate the lessons they offer to all of us in our careers and daily lives. But you say Harry Potter lives in a world of magic? What can we possibly learn to apply to our own careers and everyday lives? Morris shows that the most difficult problems Harry and his friends face are rarely solved by the use of magic alone. Rather they are conquered by intelligence reasoning determination creativity friendship and a host of other classic virtues-the very qualities in fact that make for success in every aspect of our lives. Blending an array of provocative examples from the novels with thought-provoking commentary on contemporary management practices IF HARRY POTTER RAN GENERAL ELECTRIC offers readers a master’s course on leadership and ethics told in an engaging and insightful way. |

Telstar Joe Meek Story $18.58 Rated: NASynopsis: Set against the backdrop of hedonistic, swinging, early 60s London, Telstar shares the stranger-than-fiction true story of Joe Meek (Tony Award-winner Con O Neill, who originated the role on London stage). An enormously talented but quirky maverick, Meek revolutionized British pop, enjoying enormous success early on with the biggest selling record of its time, Telstar, the first U.K. album to hit #1 on American charts. But the flamboyant, tone-deaf songwriter was also a deeply troubled soul dabbling in the occult and addicted to amphetamines and his decline was as meteoric and spectacular as his rise. Also starring two-time Academy Award-winner Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) and Pam Ferris (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and featuring an original soundtrack. |

All Things Human: Henry Codman Potter and the Social Gospel in the Episcopal Church $9.87 In addition to being the sixth bishop of the Diocese of New York, Henry Codman Potter (1835-1908) was a prominent voice in the Social Gospel movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This book, the first in-depth study of Potter’s life and work, examines his career in the Episcopal church as well as the origins and legacy of his progressive social views. As industrialization and urbanization spread in the nineteenth century, the Social Gospel movement sought to apply Christian teachings to effect improvements in the lives of the less fortunate. Potter was firmly in this tradition, concerning himself especially with issues of race, the place of women in society, questions of labor and capital, and what he called political righteousness. Placing Potter against the wider backdrop of nineteenth-century American Protestantism, Bourgeois explores the experiences and influences that led him to espouse these socially conscious beliefs, to work for social reform, and to write such works as Sermons of the City (1881) and The Citizen in His Relation to the Industrial Situation (1902). In telling Potter’s remarkable story, All Things Human stands as a valuable contribution to intellectual and religious history as well as an exploration of the ways in which religion and society interact. |

A member of a special-operations until so covert it may as well be run by ghosts, Buchanan is a master of impersonation, a specialist in assuming false identities. But now his unique gifts – and desperate pathology – threaten to destroy him. The beginning of his nightmare occurs in Cancun, Mexico, where Buchanan’s latest alias is brutally unmasked. Racing through a torturous escape route, he is shocked to discover that his controllers will no longer give him a new identity. For the first time in eight years, he will have to be himself. But after spending so much time assuming different identities, he no longer knows who he is. Suddenly, he receives a mysterious postcard, a coded, unmistakable plea for help. Its source is Juana Mendez, a former partner who had posed as his wife six years earlier, countless missions ago. In his quest for Juana, Buchanan is thrust into a stark wilderness of mirrors and faced with a harrowing conspiracy. Yet he finds the unreadable maze of his own mind as dangerous as the harsh, chilling world that assails him from without. His partner in the search is Holly McCoy, a reporter whose beauty is matched only by her determination to penetrate Buchanan’s multilayered psychological armor and write her subject’s real story. Seeking one woman, while inexorably drawn to another, Buchanan relentlessly follows a seductive but deadly trail from Key West to New Orleans, from San Antonio to Mexico City. Ultimately, he will find the truth about Juana, and even the truth about himself – if he can survive. |

Beer School: Bottling Success at the Brooklyn Brewery $16.95 What do you get when you cross a journalist and a banker? A brewery, of course. A great city should have great beer. New York finally has, thanks to Brooklyn. Steve Hindy and Tom Potter provided it. Beer School explains how they did it: their mistakes as well as their triumphs. Steve writes with a journalist’s skepticism-as though he has forgotten that he is reporting on himself. Tom is even less forgiving-he’s a banker, after all. The inside story reads at times like a cautionary tale, but it is an account of a great and welcome achievement. Michael Jackson, The Beer Hunter(r) An accessible and insightful case study with terrific insight for aspiring entrepreneurs. And if that’s not enough, it is all about beer! Professor Murray Low, Executive Director, Lang Center for Entrepreneurship, Columbia Business School Great lessons on what every first-time entrepreneur will experience. Being down the block from the Brooklyn Brewery, I had firsthand witness to their positive impact on our community. I give Steve and Tom’s book an A++! Norm Brodsky, Senior Contributing Editor, Inc. magazine Beer School is a useful and entertaining book. In essence, this is the story of starting a beer business from scratch in New York City. The product is one readers can relate to, and the market is as tough as they get. What a fun challenge! The book can help not only those entrepreneurs who are starting a business but also those trying to grow one once it is established. Steve and Tom write with enthusiasm and insight about building their business. It is clear that they learned a lot along the way. Readers can learn from these lessons too. Michael Preston, Adjunct Professor, Lang Center for Entrepreneurship, Columbia Business School, and coauthor, The Road to Success: How to Manage Growth Although we (thankfully!) never had to deal with the Mob, being held up at gunpoint, or having our beer and equipment rippe |

Birth of the Blues/Blue Skies $14.98 Two classic Bing Crosby films, BIRTH OF BLUES and BLUE SKIES, on one DVD.BIRTH OF THE BLUES: As a child, Jeff Lambert (Bing Crosby) hangs out in New Orleans’ Basin Street, playing hot swing on his clarinet instead of the classics his father prefers. He’s inspired by an African-American group there and, some years later, at the turn of the century, sets out to form a jazz band of his own. With cornetist Memphis (Brian Donlevy), singer Betty Lou Cobb (Mary Martin) and trombonist Jack Teagarden (of the Original Dixieland Jazz Group, after which the story is patterned), he’s on his way.A veritable history of jazz follows. Parsons, Los Angeles Examiner)BLUE SKIES: For what Fred Astaire had announced would be his last film, no expense was spared. This musical extravaganza boasts 30 Irving Berlin songs, 47 sets, sumptuous costumes, and a budget of $3,000,000. The result is sensational. (And fortunately, Astaire did not retire from films!)Dancing star Jed Potter (Astaire) and singer/nightclub owner Johnny Adams (Bing Crosby) are both in love with songstress Mary O’Hara (Joan Caulfield). She marries Johnny, but his passion for buying and selling nightclubs drives them apart. So Jed steps in, hoping to win Mary’s heart – until fate steps in and changes the lives of all three. The most outstanding number is Astaire’s famous Puttin’ on the Ritz, a split-screen gem with a chorus of miniature Astaires tap-dancing behind him.
