Is the Crosman model 1077 still in production?

I am interested in buying one, but I can’t find one at any of my local sporting goods stores.

They’re still making it. At least according to Crosman’s website.(1) Probably your best bet is to buy it online from a reputable dealer like Pyramid Air.(2)

Tropical Vegetable Production

Tropical Vegetable Production

$125

Sustainable crop production is vital to ensure that supplies of fresh vegetables and their products are readily available. However, food security still remains a huge problem in areas of the world, including the tropics and sub-tropics, where communities rely solely on subsistence farming to meet their day to day food demands. It is evident that food production needs to become more sustainable to ensure economic stability and poverty reduction. With this in mind, "Tropical Vegetable Production" addresses the problems surrounding vegetable production in developing countries. Divided into two parts this volume discusses firstly the principles and practise of tropical vegetable production, from site selection, security and management to seeds, crop preparation and pesticides, and secondly provides details of those crops which are of particular importance in developing countries.

Resource Utilization in Rice Production

Resource Utilization in Rice Production

$113.11

Rice growing is dominant in the eastern parts of Uganda. The contribution of farm resources to rice production as well as the returns to resources and their management remains unknown. The book examines land management practices with specific emphasis on crop rotation and bush fallowing and goes further to analyse problems created by dominance of land ownership by men.The book further reveals that family labour is a dominant resource with high returns. The book recommends that production should be directed towards commercialisation of rice though investment in capital by smallscale rice farmers is still limited. Production of rice is characterised by high costs implying that the revenue generated is paid to the variable and fixed inputs, leaving a negative residual to the farmer. Therefore, increasing rice production in the shotrun will generally be achieved by putting more male labour and fertilisers to use. Given that rice production is done under lowinput farming systems, interventions such as row planting and use of oxplough is required. Furthmore, improved provision of credit and education services should be ensured for sustainable rice production Author: Kyomuhendo, Jacquiline Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 92 Publication Date: 2011/08/25 Language: English Dimensions: 9.02 x 5.98 x 0.22 inches

Prehistoric Quarries and Lithic Production

Prehistoric Quarries and Lithic Production

$51.16

This book was originally published in 1984. For over a million years rocks provided human beings with the essential raw materials for the production of tools. Nevertheless we still know very little about the behaviour and processes that resulted in the creation of archaeological sites at or near lithic quarries. In the past archaeologists have placed much emphasis on the process of exchange in their analysis of prehistoric economies while largely ignoring the sources of the exchanged objects. However, with the development of interest in the means of production, these sites have begun to take on a new significance. Prehistoric Quarries and Lithic Production is the first systematic study of archaeological sites that served as quarries for stone tools. Its theoretical and methodological importance will extend its appeal beyond those archaeologists concerned with lithic technology and prehistoric exchange systems to archaeologists and anthropologists in general and to geographers and geologists. Production of Foreign Proteins in Industrial Fungi

Production of Foreign Proteins in Industrial Fungi

$125.85

Proficiency of filamentous fungi for producing massive quantities of extracellular enzymes has promoted them attractive resources to be exploited in industrial manufacture of foreign proteins. A number of filamentous fungi are generally regarded as safe to be used, for example, in the food and feed industry. Numerous production bottlenecks are still a mystery, and overall production amounts of foreign proteins are still considerably lower than those obtained for native proteins. The less known attributes in protein production and secretion in filamentous fungi are discussed in the book, where the economically important fungus, Trichoderma reesei, occurs on the spotlight. The fungus has been exploited in food, animal feed, textile and pulp and paper industries, in biological control of plant disease, biodegradation of chlorophenolic compounds, and soil bioremediation. It has been harnessed also in production of calf chymosin and barley cysteine peptidase. Their production and secretory bottlenecks in the fungus are going to be revealed. Could we be able to get the fungus to manufacture effectively also therapeutic proteins in pharmaceutical industry? Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries

Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries

$559

Industrial production in high-wage countries like Germany is still at risk. Yet, there are many counter-examples in which producing companies dominate their competitors by not only compensating for their specific disadvantages in terms of factor costs (e.g. wages, energy, duties and taxes) but rather by minimising waste using synchronising integrativity as well as by obtaining superior adaptivity on alternating conditions. In order to respond to the issue of economic sustainability of industrial production in high-wage countries, the leading production engineering and material research scientists of RWTH Aachen University together with renowned companies have established the Cluster of Excellence "Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries". This compendium comprises the cluster's scientific results as well as a selection of business and technology cases, in which these results have been successfully implemented into industrial practice in close cooperation with more than 30 companies of the industrial production sector.

Mr Sraffa on Joint Production and Other Essays

Mr Sraffa on Joint Production and Other Essays

$250

Interest in the application of the classical theory of prices, in its significance for the critique of economic theory, and in the special aspect of joint production has developed slowly but steadily since Sraffa’s Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities (henceforth to be abbreviated as PCMC) was published in 1960. The core of this book (Part II) consists of my PhD thesis Mr Sraffa On Joint Production’, which was written in 1969/70 when I was first a Visitor to the Faculty of Economics, then an Advanced Student at King’s College, Cambridge. At that time, almost nobody had written about the formal analysis of joint production, and the critique of neoclassical economic theory had only just begun in the form of the debate about the aggregate production function. Following adviceI still do not know whether it was good or badI did not immediately attempt a thoroughgoing revision of the book. Instead, I circulated my thesis in English as a private print (with an introduction in German) and set out to make the results available to a wider public by publishing two or three articles about it. As it happened, Sraffa and joint production shortly thereafter came into fashion; copies of the thesis appeared in unexpected places, and the articles (my own included) began to multiply. It became difficult to change the subject of my researches. Indeed, the time to attempt a final’ textbook has not yet come; the controversy about the revival of classical theory is far from being settled. I have therefore gladly accepted the offer to provide a second edition of this thesis, since the text is often demanded and not generally accessible.

Haunt Me Still

Haunt Me Still

Kate Stanley, Jennifer Lee Carrell’s dauntless Shakespearean scholar-turned-director, made a memorable debut in Interred with Their Bones. Having chased down her mother’s killer (and recovering one of Shakespeare’s lost plays in the process), Kate’s fame as a director with an expertise in “occult Shakespeare” catapults her, and Ben Pearl, her partner in crime-solving, into a new production of Macbeth, showcasing a fabled collection of objects relating both to the play and the historical Scottish king for whom it is named. The Bard’s darkest play is famously cursed, its reputation for malevolence so strong that many actors refuse to quote or even name the play aloud. And as rehearsals begin at the foot of Scotland’s Dunsinnan Hill, it doesn’t take long for the curse to stir. Strange references to the boy actor who first played Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare’s day – and died in the role-pop up. A trench atop Dunsinnan Hill is found filled with blood, and a severed human thumb turns up among the props. And Kate begins sleepwalking, waking early one morning alone atop the hill, her hands smeared in blood. Kate has no memory of how she got there, but later that day a local woman is found dead on the hill in circumstances that suggest not just ritual murder but ancient pagan sacrifice. With the police more focused on Kate as a suspect than as a possible future victim, she and Ben find themselves in a desperate race to discover a lost version of Macbeth, said to contain rituals of witchcraft aimed at conjuring demonic forces to gain forbidden knowledge. However much Kate would like to dismiss such rituals as superstition, someone else appears willing to kill for them – and for the manuscript said to spell them out.

Greening of Petroleum Operations: The Science of Sustainable Energy Production

$249.99

The Future of Petroleum Operations This state-of-the-art text analyzes some of the most contentious issues in the energy industry, covering new and greener processes for engineers and scientists and urging them to move petroleum operations closer to sustainability. Although petroleum is still the world’s most diverse, efficient, and abundant energy source, there is a growing initiative from global political and industry leaders to "go green," because of climate concerns and high gasoline prices. This book investigates and details how to do that. This groundbreaking new volume: Explains why current petroleum industry practices are inherently unsustainable and offers unique new solutions for "greening" the petroleum industry Discusses hot-button issues, such as global warming, carbon sequestration, zero-waste management, and sustainability Shows engineers and scientists how to implement the processes necessary to be more environmentally conscious Offers, for the first time, a new theory that certain carbons do not contribute to global warming, but their origin and the processes involved do Praise for The Greening of Petroleum Operations "The book proposes a paradigm shift in energy management. It correctly identifies root causes of environmental impact of current petroleum production operations. With proper science, the book shows that fossil fuel production and utilization are inherently sustainable as long as natural materials and energy sources are used…. This book has the potential of revolutionizing energy management practices." — Farouq Ali , Honorary Professor of Oil and Gas Engineering, University of Calgary

Five years into one of the most unlikely reunions in recent rock & roll history, the New York Dolls have begun to acknowledge the great paradox of the new edition of the band. If ever there was a band with a distinctive musical and emotional personality, it was the Dolls, but with only two members of the original lineup still alive and able to take the stage in 2009, David Johansen and Syl Sylvain have had a heavy burden to bear, trying to make music that feels and sounds like the New York Dolls without their iconic lead guitarist, their original rhythm section, and the sort of lifestyle that defined their world view when they were the edgiest band in America’s toughest city. The new Dolls created a reasonable approximation of what their old sound would have been like had they all survived into the new millennium on 2006′s One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This, but 2009′s ‘Cause I Sez So suggests this band has little interest in living in the past, including their own. Todd Rundgren, who produced the Dolls’ brilliant 1973 debut, was behind the controls for this set, and the first two songs, “‘Cause I Sez So” and “Muddy Bones,” conjure up the sloppy downtown energy of the Dolls Mk. 1 better than anything on One Day It Will Please Us, full of dirty guitars, crashing drums, and broadly strutting vocals from Johansen, complemented by Rundgren’s roomy, natural-sounding production. But after that one-two punch, the album shifts gears, easing into a groove that’s more easygoing and (gulp) mature than the classic Dolls assault, with a warmer and more subdued approach. “Lonely So Long” is a great pop tune with a faint resemblance to the Beatles, “Nobody Got No Bizness” is a high-spirited, hip-shaking R&B shuffle, “Temptation to Exist” is a melodramatic ballad that sounds like it could have fit onto one of Johansen’s Buster Poindexter albums, “This Is Ridiculous” is a blues-influenced number that gives the singer plenty of room to showboat, and “Maki…

 ...And Justice for All

…And Justice for All

$40.99

The most immediately noticeable aspect of …And Justice for All isn’t Metallica’s still-growing compositional sophistication or the apocalyptic lyrical portrait of a society in decay. It’s the weird, bone-dry production. The guitars buzz thinly, the drums click more than pound, and Jason Newsted’s bass is nearly inaudible. It’s a shame that the cold, flat sound obscures some of the sonic details, because …And Justice for All is Metallica’s most complex, ambitious work; every song is an expanded suite, with only two of the nine tracks clocking in at under six minutes. It takes a while to sink in, but given time, …And Justice for All reveals some of Metallica’s best material. It also reveals the band’s determination to pull out all the compositional stops, throwing in extra sections, odd-numbered time signatures, and dense webs of guitar arpeggios and harmonized leads. At times, it seems like they’re doing it simply because they can; parts of the album lack direction and probably should have been trimmed for momentum’s sake. Pacing-wise, the album again loosely follows the blueprint of Ride the Lightning, though not as closely as Master of Puppets. This time around, the fourth song — once again a ballad with a thrashy chorus and outro — gave the band one of the unlikeliest Top 40 singles in history; “One” was an instant metal classic, based on Dalton Trumbo’s antiwar novel Johnny Got His Gun and climaxing with a pulverizing machine-gun imitation. As a whole, opinions on …And Justice for All remain somewhat divided: some think it’s a slightly flawed masterpiece and the pinnacle of Metallica’s progressive years; others see it as bloated and overambitious. Either interpretation can be readily supported, but the band had clearly taken this direction as far as it could. The difficulty of reproducing these songs in concert eventually convinced Metallica that it was time for an overhaul. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

12 Angry Men [Criterion Collection] [Blu-ray]

12 Angry Men [Criterion Collection] [Blu-ray]

$39.95

A Puerto Rican youth is on trial for murder, accused of knifing his father to death. The twelve jurors retire to the jury room, having been admonished that the defendant is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Eleven of the jurors vote for conviction, each for reasons of his own. The sole holdout is Juror #8, played by Henry Fonda. As Fonda persuades the weary jurors to re-examine the evidence, we learn the backstory of each man. Juror #3 (Lee J. Cobb), a bullying self-made man, has estranged himself from his own son. Juror #7 (Jack Warden) has an ingrained mistrust of foreigners; so, to a lesser extent, does Juror #6 (Edward Binns). Jurors #10 (Ed Begley) and #11 (George Voskovec), so certain of the infallibility of the Law, assume that if the boy was arrested, he must be guilty. Juror #4 (E.G. Marshall) is an advocate of dispassionate deductive reasoning. Juror #5 (Jack Klugman), like the defendant a product of “the streets,” hopes that his guilty vote will distance himself from his past. Juror #12 (Robert Webber), an advertising man, doesn’t understand anything that he can’t package and market. And Jurors #1 (Martin Balsam), #2 (John Fiedler) and #9 (Joseph Sweeney), anxious not to make waves, “go with the flow.” The excruciatingly hot day drags into an even hotter night; still, Fonda chips away at the guilty verdict, insisting that his fellow jurors bear in mind those words “reasonable doubt.” A pet project of Henry Fonda’s, Twelve Angry Men was his only foray into film production; the actor’s partner in this venture was Reginald Rose, who wrote the 1954 television play on which the film was based. Carried over from the TV version was director Sidney Lumet, here making his feature-film debut. A flop when it first came out (surprisingly, since it cost almost nothing to make), Twelve Angry Men holds up beautifully when seen today. It was remade for television in 1997 by director William Friedkin with Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott. ~ H…

3rd from the Sun

$18.98

Given how good the Edge/Creed/Stench lineup was, the fact that they never properly toured outside two dates — one in San Francisco and the other, bizarrely, in Italy — is all the more regrettable. Continuing the blend of straight-up rock crunch and crumbling weirdness that made the Chrome name, 3rd is both just accessible and just gone enough. Opening track “Firebomb” sets the stage well — Edge sings in deep basso profundo mode, the Stench brothers keep the beat going, and Creed unleashes more incredible, strong soloing to go with his crisp rhythm work. It’s another shoulda-been new wave classic that would still seem out of place among its fellows. From there it’s another trip into the “not quite right” — “Armageddon” is especially strong, an eight-minute slow burn toward doom with overly appropriate downbeat rhythms. Creed once again shines with his heavily treated fretwork; when toward the end he tracks two separate solos playing off each other, things really go to town. Another spooky highlight of his work is “Off the Line,” where more upfront death dirges are alternated with buried, creepy effects in the background. Creed gets in some vocal fun as well — at least, assuming it is him given the constant production treatments — on “Heart Beat,” his distorted words sneaking around the crisp beat and wheezing keyboards as well as the usual addition of feedback crunch. The title track was suitably freaked out and heavy enough for Prong to cover it years later on their Beg to Differ album. Though Hendrix’s “Third Stone from the Sun” may seem an obvious source of inspiration, the distorted vocals and steady beats come much more from Chrome’s collective brain. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

Meet a dewy-eyed ingenue, a gee-whiz tenor, stuck-up stars, hard-up producers, brassy blondes and shady ladies from the 80′s. They’re all denizens of 42nd Street, belting out ageless Harry Warren/Al Dubin songs and tapping out Busby Berkeley’s's sensational Depression-lifting production numbers. The put-on-a-show plot spins merrily, full of snappy banter and new faces Ruby Keeler (her movie debut), Dick Powell and Ginger Rogers. The show-stopping numbers ( Shuffle Off To Buffalo You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me and the title tune) still dazzle. Looking and sounding its best in years via this new digital transfer from the restored original camera negative and optical audio tracks, 42nd Street shows good times never go out of style.

Babies love to bounce and sway, and that’s what the mamaRoo does. It still moves like you do. The mamaRoo is meant for babies from birth to 25 lbs (usually about 6 months), or until they start to sit up unassisted. -The mamaRoo is truly remarkable. From planning to production, it was shaped by the expertise of designers, doctors, nurses, and most importantly, hundreds of parents. Our team used motion sensors to measure movements of real moms and dads as they soothed their babies, and guess what was found? Parents don?t vibrate like bouncy seats or swing like swings. They bounce and sway. -When w4moms set out to create the mamaRoo, they put motion sensors on moms and dads and measured the ways they moved to comfort their babies. While there?s no one universal movement that everybody makes (that would have been too easy), there are certain types of calming motions every parent uses. That?s why the mamaRoo has five different motion settings. Each one is a variation on the up-and-down and side-to-side movements research found parents making over and over again to soothe their infants. It?s not just a tagline: the mamaRoo really does ?move like you do.” -The next study involved the speed of these movements. There?s a very real difference between how a motion looks and how it feels. Think about the swinging pirate ship rides at amusement parks: they look like they?re moving slowly, but step on and you?ll find that?s not the case. The mamaRoo?s motions were chosen for how they feel, and most importantly, for how they feel to an infant. What seems slow to an adult may be just right for a baby, and that?s what we?ve seen time and time again with the mamaRoo. Using extensive field research, babies consistently love the mamaRoo and find it very soothing. As such, speeds are widely adjustable to control movements. -The mamaRoo?s seat reclines to any position along its axis. The machine washable fabric removes easily. It?s as easy to clean as it is to use. Softer, plush seat fab

 A Brief History of Love

A Brief History of Love

$14.98

On their debut album, A Brief History of Love, the Big Pink immerse themselves in all aspects of the first wave of shoegaze. The duo of Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell have doubtlessly made a complete study of the guitar music coming out of their native U.K. in the late ’80s and early ’90s and worked to build their sound into an impressive conglomeration of influences that’s made up of components like the proggy excess of the Catherine Wheel, the guitar overload of My Bloody Valentine, the drum loops and dance elements of Chapterhouse, the dark, industrial sheen of Curve, and the epic sweep of the Verve but with plenty of modern production tricks. The influence extends to the vocals, which recall the expansiveness of the Verve’s Richard Ashcroft rather than the dreaminess of the Thames Valley shoegaze contingent. Seeing (and hearing) all these comparisons may make it easy for some to instantly write the band off as record collectors or scene fetishists with no ideas of their own, but that would be a mistake. Yes, they are derivative. Yes, they are rehashing the past. This is key, though. They write really good songs and make them sound really good, too. That’s the neat trick that allows them to escape the retro-revivalist label and that’s why A Brief History of Love should appeal to both fans of shoegaze days gone by and the people who are still discovering the past and digging other groups who, like the Big Pink, are keeping shoegaze alive. The best songs on the album would do all right if stacked up against the work of their idols. Take “Dominos,” for example. The thundering drums combine with an instantly memorable hook, the kind that makes you want to sing along before the first chorus is half over, to make it soar. “At War with the Sun,” too, has a thrilling chorus and an uplifting feel, “Tonight” rollicks and rolls like a goofy cross between Jane’s Addiction at their most pop and Medicine at their frothiest, and “Love in Vain” is a heartbreaking balla…

A Foucault Primer: Discourse, Power and the Subject

$92.97

Who are we today? That deceptively simple question continued to be asked by the French historian and philosopher, Michel Foucault, who for the last three decades has had a profound influence on English-speaking scholars in the humanities and social sciences.; This text is designed for undergraduates and others who feel in need of some assistance when coming to grips with Foucault”s voluminous and complex writings. Instead of dealing with them chronologically, however, this book concentrates on some of their central concepts, primarily Foucault”s rethinking of the categories of discourse, power, and the subject. ; Foucault”s writings contribute collectively to what he himself calls an ontology of the present. His historical research was always geared towards showing how things could have been and still could be otherwise. This is especially the case with respect to the production of human subjects.

A Measureless Peril: America in the Fight for the Atlantic, the Longest Battle of World War II By Richard Snow

A Measureless Peril: America in the Fight for the Atlantic, the Longest Battle of World War II By Richard Snow

$12.99

Of all the threats that faced his country in World War II, Winston Churchill said, just one really scared him—what he called the “measureless peril” of the German U-boat campaign. <P>In that global conflagration, only one battle—the struggle for the Atlantic—lasted from the very first hours of the conflict to its final day. Hitler knew that victory depended on controlling the sea-lanes where American food and fuel and weapons flowed to the Allies. At the start, U-boats patrolled a few miles off the eastern seaboard, savagely attacking scores of defenseless passenger ships and merchant vessels while hastily converted American cabin cruisers and fishing boats vainly tried to stop them. Before long, though, the United States was ramping up what would be the greatest production of naval vessels the world had ever known. <P>Then the battle became a thrilling cat-and-mouse game between the quickly built U.S. warships and the ever-more cunning and lethal U-boats. The historian Richard Snow captures all the drama of the merciless contest at every level, from the doomed sailors on an American freighter defying a German cruiser, to the amazing Allied attempts to break the German naval codes, to Winston Churchill pressing Franklin Roosevelt to join the war months before Pearl Harbor (and FDR’s shrewd attempts to fight the battle alongside Britain while still appearing to keep out of it). <P>Inspired by the collection of letters that his father sent his mother from the destroyer escort he served aboard, Snow brings to life the longest continuous battle in modern times. <P> With its vibrant prose and fast-paced action, <I>A Measureless Peril </i>is an immensely satisfying account that belongs on the small shelf of the finest histories ever written about World War II.

 A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

$25.48

After an historical survey of A Midsummer Night’s Dream from Shakespeare’s time through to the 19th century, Jay Halio focuses primarily on 20th century productions and adaptations, for film and television as well as for the stage. Chapters are devoted to productions by Max Reinhardt, Peter Hall, Robert Lepage, and especially to Peter Brook’s landmark production in 1970 and the reactions to it. Using a wealth of personal experience, as well as original promptbooks and critical reviews, Halio shows how differently but still very effectively the play may be staged, as the wide variety of plays he records. This second, enlarged edition contains three new chapters on Adrian Noble’s RSC production and film, Michael Hoffman’s film, and the Dream in China. Written in clear, jargon-free language, this is the only book so far in print that offers an extended study of major 20th-century productions of the Dream in their historical context.

 A Stitch in Time

A Stitch in Time

$63.32

The textile and fashion industries have forever been at the mercy of rapidly changing styles and fickle customers who want the latest designs white they are still fashionable. The result for these businesses, often forced to forecast sales and deal with suppliers based on volatile demand, is a history of stock shortages, or costly markdowns. But, as the authors disclose in A Stitch in Time, technological advances that began in the 1980s introduced a new concept in retailing — lean retailing.Pioneered by entrepreneurs such as Sam WaLton and WAL-MART, lean retailing has enabled apparel producers to reorganize the manner in which they related to retail customers, undertook distribution, forecasted and planned production, and managed supplier relations. In an industry that typically suffered from great delays from warehouse to rack, sales data was now captured at the retailer’s checkout through bar coding and immediately transmitted back to distributors, manufacturers, designers, and even to the textile mills that weave the cloth. Armed with up-to-the-minute data about colors, sizes, and geographic sales, everyone in the chain was able to reduce cost, increase efficiency, and keep the customer in style like never before. And today, the broad changes introduced in the apparal, industry by lean retailing are rippling through a growing segment of the American economy.A richly detailed and resonant account, A Stitch in Time brilliantly captures both the history and the future of the fashion industry as it a new paradigm for understanding the challenges of offers executives retailing and manufacturing in all segments of our rapidly transforming economy.

 Aerobic Granule and Membrane Bioreactor

Aerobic Granule and Membrane Bioreactor

$141.93

Among the existing technologies, a shift towards advanced biological or membrane treatment processes from the conventional biological treatment technologies are noticed in recent days. Nowadays, application of membrane technology has increased for its production of good quality treated water which can be reused and recycled for domestic, agriculture and industrial purposes. Currently, the membrane bioreactor (MBR) process is an emerging technology that has been successfully applied which operates based on combination of activated sludge and membrane unit. However, the conventional MBR technologies still stay behind of limitations, namely inability to achieve simultaneous organic and nitrogen removal in a single reactor and fouling control. To overcome these issues, the combination of granular sludge and membrane process could be an attractive treatment process. In addition it alleviates fouling and enhance simultaneous nitrogen removal.

Produced by George Harrison and Phil Spector.Excerpt From Liner Notes:It’s been thirty years since All Things Must Pass was recorded.I still like the songs on the album and believe they can continue to outlive the style in which they were recorded. It was difficult to resist re-mixing every track. All these years later I would like to liberate some of the songs from the big production that seemed appropriate at the time, but now seem a bit over the top with the reverb in the wall of sound. Still, it was an important album for me and a timely vehicle for all the songs I’d been writing during the last period with The Beatles. I began recording just months after we had all finally decided to go our separate ways and I was looking forward to making the first solo album of ‘songs’ (as opposed to Wonderwall and Electronic Sound which were instrumental)…

But as reality ought to become history at one point, what are we to do with such windows on the past?Developing and applying a highly innovative approach to the modern picture, American Icons sets out to expose the historicity of icons, to reframe the history of the screen and to dissect the visual core of a medium that is still so poorly understood. Dismantling the aura of apparently timeless icons and past spectacles with their seductive power to attract the eye, this book offers new ways of seeing the mechanisms at work in our modern pictorial culture.

 Another Perfect Day [Bonus Tracks]

Another Perfect Day [Bonus Tracks]

$12.99

To this day, Another Perfect Day remains one of the most unique (albeit misunderstood) albums in the entire Mot? rhead catalog. The band’s first effort sans legendary axe-meister “Fast” Eddie Clarke (following six albums, of which at least three are still considered timeless classics), Another Perfect Day would be the band’s only outing with onetime Thin Lizzy axeman Brian “Robbo” Robertson. Clearly a nervous musical marriage from the start, the album captures Mot? rhead mainstays Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister and “Philthy Animal” Taylor struggling to adapt their raw power and unparalleled distortion to Robertson’s more mainstream hard rock instincts and melodic tendencies. Thanks in part to Tony Platt’s excellent production, Another Perfect Day ranks among the band’s best-sounding records ever, but tinkering with a legendary formula is always fraught with danger (is that a boogie-woogie piano on “Rock It”?), and as one might expect, the results here are alternately exhilarating and sometimes frustrating. On the one hand, the glorious arpeggiated melodies that characterize singles “Dancing on Your Grave” and “Shine” (Robertson’s most obvious contributions here) were a total shock to the system by classic Mot? rhead standards, but their popularity and ultimate longevity as band highlights is a testament to their excellence. Furthermore, other drawn-out blues exercises like “One Track Mind” (which wouldn’t sound out of place on any number of early Ted Nugent albums) and “I Got Mine” simply took the intensity and power of previously delivered sub-three-minute blasts and diluted it into four to five minutes, which had some fans impatiently glancing at their clocks. The title track barely escapes this predicament, and tighter, punchier numbers like “Back at the Funny Farm” and “Die You Bastard” manage to revisit the classic bile and fury of years past, but Robertson’s unwillingness to be a team player (refusing to play standards like “Bomber” live, nev…

 Anthology 2

Anthology 2

$34.98

Anthology: 2 features the Beatles’ working tapes from their most fertile period–the years in which they abandoned touring, retreated into the studio, and recorded some of their most enduring music. This isn’t a survey of Beatles hits, but a treasure trove of rough drafts and near misses. An early take of You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away finds John Lennon still working out his vocal phrasing; a run-through of Got To Get You Into My Life, recorded before the brass section was brought in, has the band trying all sorts of harmonies and an alternate bridge. Your Mother Should Know, with a marching snare-drum beat, is nearly unrecognizable from the released version, and Good Morning Good Morning, stripped of the heavy Sgt. Pepper psychedelic makeup, rocks with Stones-like ferocity. There is also lots of clowning around on Anthology: 2–most prominently, John and Paul giggling their way through an early vocal take of And Your Bird Can Sing. But the bulk of Anthology: 2 isn’t genius at play; it’s genius at work. There are three takes of Strawberry Fields Forever that see this rock classic evolving from Lennon demo to bare-bones practice arrangement to full-blown production. Also featured are McCartney’s solo demos for two of the Beatles’ best. To hear him showing the band the chords to Yesterday, and sitting alone at his piano, still fooling with the words to Fool On The Hill, is to hear pop history quite literally in the making.
