Why do professional swimmers appear to drink the pool water before starting the race?
I’m watching the American pre-trials for the Olympics on TV right now and I noticed many of the swimmers, before getting into the pool. rub the water on their arms and face, but also cup a little in their hands and drink it (sometimes spitting it out).
I can understand putting it on your arms to get a feel for the temperature before hopping in, but why drink it? Is this a tradition or something they do for physiological reasons?
This is to prevent the gag reflex that can occur from accidentally swallowing water while swimming. By tasting the water in advance, the mouth is made accustomed to the taste and quality of the water and its additives.
