City of Evil $17.98 Avenged Sevenfold’s first two albums had a clear influence from heavy metal, but the California combo also freely incorporated emo, screamo, and post-hardcore elements. The mixing and matching meant 2003′s Waking the Fallen had as many sighing harmonies as it did harmonized guitar freakouts. And yet City of Evil, the band’s third record and Warner debut, is absolutely rife with the imagery and pacing of classic metal. Look at that artwork. It features a skeletal swordsman flying a steed with steaming nostrils over the urban inferno of the title; tattoos, demons, and a skull with flapping wings adorn the lyric book. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal influence is immediate and prevalent, from the maniacally rippling percussion throughout to the triumphantly whining lead guitars in the chorus of “Blinded in Chains,” or the soaring melody in “Burn It Down” that meets its match in Metallica-styled verses. The downshifts into guttural roars are largely gone, replaced by better-integrated atmospheric stretches or the tighter songcraft of a track like “Bat Country,” which intersects punk and pop influences in a manner similar to My Chemical Romance. At over seven minutes, “Wicked End” is a late-album standout. Vocalist M. Shadows rips through couplets like “We’ve grown in numbers, six hundred sixty-six/War breaks, a sign of the end, eternally expelled/Look to the sky for knowledge, the stars align tonight,” guitarists Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance trade off blistering solos, and there’s a full choral interlude in the center, complete with an angelic host and sighing cellos. Which is all totally metal, and refreshingly unmarred by attempts to fit too many jumbled genres in. City of Evil’s ballads are a little trite, and even its double-bass raging doesn’t necessarily break new ground. But Avenged Sevenfold gets all the pieces right, and sound like they’re having more fun here than in the scattershot approach of the first couple records. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi |

Dear You [Expanded] $14.98 Released in 1995, Dear You found Jawbreaker cleaning up and streamlining their punk-pop sound and coming up with a sleek, slick punk-grunge classic that relies as much on clever songwriting and restrained emotions as it does on the group’s trademarked high-energy attack. From the opening chords of the anthemic “Save Your Generation,” Blake Schwarzenbach’s vocals are the star. He was coming off of throat surgery that robbed him of a lot of his vocal power, but gave him a smoky intimate sound that gives the feeling that he is whispering right in your ear. On songs like “I Love You So Much It’s Killing Us Both” and “Jet Black,” he sounds wounded in a way that screaming could never convey. The album is a powerful mix of jumpy punk-pop like “Bad Scene Everybody’s Fault,” “Fireman,” and the aching “Chemistry,” and midtempo tracks like the amazing “Jet Black,” “Million,” and “Basilica,” which escape being tied to the time of grunge-by-the-numbers by being melodic and heartfelt without going over the top, by being just punk enough to be real and just epic enough to rise above the often boringly earnest approach of too many punk bands. Along with Weezer’s Blue Album, Dear You is one of the cornerstones upon which emo and late-’90s punk-pop was built. Certainly Jimmy Eat World wore out their copy (Bleed American sounds like a less-produced younger brother), and Dashboard Confessional’s whole oeuvre sounds like a lesser version of Dear You’s acoustic “Unlisted Track.” Depending on how you feel about emo, there is either a lot to blame them for or be thankful for here. Either way, Dear You is one of the best rock records of the ’90s and a fitting last testament to a great band. Decemberunderground $11.99 AFI is a band lucky to own fiercely loyal fans who embrace -- and ultimately expect -- the gradual transformation the band has undergone with each album since 1999's Black Sails in the Sunset. Where many bands get called out for signing to a major label or even just maturing their sound over time, AFI fans have chiefly stayed devoted to their ever-evolving goth-punk heroes. With that in mind, Decemberunderground comes as AFI's follow-up to their ambitious major-label smash Sing the Sorrow. Due to the clever production tricks employed on that album, fans might expect even more intricate arrangements, sound effects, and sonic landscapes to emerge from the wintry packaging of Decemberunderground. To an extent this is true, but it's more that the cloudy gloom permeating their career thus far has lifted, allowing a relatively tighter and lighter overall album to emerge. Take the band's traditional prelude for instance: this time it's infused with stirring strings and an uplifting dance-pop beat that is a far cry from the dark and eerie call-to-arms chants of previous albums. And though "Kill Caustic" (and later "Affliction") brings AFI's earlier hardcore punch, if you thought "Girl's Not Grey" was poppy, check out this record's lead single, "Miss Murder." Despite a slightly ominous undertone, the glam-tinged song is damn near playful and sunny amid bouncy rhythms, vaguely industrial beats, background "hey!"s (courtesy of AFI's fan brotherhood, the Despair Faction), and a bassline that could have been swiped from Green Day. The band further dips its hand into new wave exploits ("37mm"), truly stirring choruses ("Summer Shudder"), stark electro vibrations ("Love Like Winter"), and the customary ballad ("Endlessly, She Said"). Even If It Kills Me $19.98 With punk-pop stalwarts blink-182 now out of the running, Motion City Soundtrack could very well be crowned the genre's new torchbearers. Theirs is a punk-pop untainted by emo, unfazed by hardcore, and firmly focused on the latter element -- pop music. To that end, Even If It Kills Me finds the band working with (among others) Cars co-founder and veteran knob-twiddler Ric Ocasek, who piles their harmonies and distorted guitars into crunchy blocks of radio gold. Motion City Soundtrack shares more than a few similarities with Ocasek's former group -- their dedication to the pop genre, for instance, with roots in something harder -- and his presence is a warm tribute to a band whose efforts deserve some veteran recognition. As before, frontman Justin Pierre is the star of this album, whether he's doing his part to liven up a semi-sedate ballad ("The Conversation" -- one of the album's only downer tracks) or channel the commercial spirit of former single "Everything Is Alright." In fact, Even If It Kills Me does seem to consciously aim for commercial acceptance, but rarely at the expense of the quirks and literate lyrics that first endeared Motion City Soundtrack to its fans. There's simply more radio-minded material here, from the beefy bass-driven "This Is for Real" to the mix of synthesized pop/rock and latter-day Guster in "Hello Helicopter." By splitting productions duties between power pop veteran Adam Schlesinger, Eli Janney, and the aforementioned Ocasek, Motion City Soundtrack also avoids the seventh inning stretch -- that nebulous point on Memory and I Am the Movie where the albums' final tracks began to suffer from being so similar to their predecessors.
