…And Out Come the Wolves $15.98 In the wake of the Offspring’s success, Rancid became a hot band, earning a dedicated cult and sparking a major-label bidding war. After flirting with a handful of major labels, the band decided to stick with Epitaph and returned with And Out Come the Wolves. While the title is a veiled reference to the attention the band gained, the album doesn’t mark an isolationist retreat into didactic, defiantly underground punk rock. Instead, Rancid develop their own identity on the record, which ironically makes them more accessible. Although they continue to draw heavily from the Clash and the Specials — and their roots in the ska-punk band Operation Ivy are quite clear throughout the record — the band plays with such energy and conviction, it’s easy to forgive their derivativeness. With this self-titled debut, the band will probably horrify the realtors. From moments of diversionary electronic tweaks to ones of shambolic, guitar-thrashed screeches (and sometimes both), the album realizes the importance of not trying to be important. The sound of bashing out unconventional “we hate something that we’ll make sure to mumble” punk rock without parroting any one musical thing is what — if anything — ties these eight songs together. And for good reason. Few bands can sound like such a rightful mess. The band has been lumped in with fellow rock unapologists Queens of the Stone Age and At the Drive-In, but this self-titled debut album is a caustic, fidgety yelp that almost belies its out-and-out intelligence. 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours $9.99 When Green Day’s first album appeared, anyone predicting that fame, MTV, top-selling albums, and more would be on the horizon in the near future would have been happily patted on the head and then sent to the insane asylum. It helps to remember that Nirvana’s breakthrough was still a year away, for one thing, and, for another, 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour isn’t a truly great album in the first place. It’s not bad, by any means, and quite arguably just about everything on it could be transposed with a slight aural tweak here and there to Dookie or Insomniac without anyone batting an eye. It’s just little more than a fun punk-pop album with some entertaining metallic flash here and there, one of many such records that the late ’80s and early ’90s produced in the indie rock world. After a great start with “At the Library,” it’s quickly clear that the rest of the record is going to continue in the same vein. What’s fun is realizing how much the band already had to work with, pursuing obvious love of three-chord forebears like the Dickies and the Ramones to energetic if not revelatory ends. Billie Joe Armstrong’s balance of disaffection and nervous, goofy passion is well in place, while he’s already showing his effective, no-frills approach to chewy feedback melody. Songs like “I Was There” and “Road to Acceptance,” not to mention the implicitly weed-celebrating “Green Day” itself, are great calling cards for later breakouts on both levels. Mike Dirnt’s no slouch himself, providing good backing vocals when needed for harmony, but oddly enough the most prominent performance throughout comes from original drummer John Kiftmeyer, who wouldn’t last through to the next album. 12 Crass Songs $15.98 While in the minds of many punk rock was supposed to be about upending the rules and assumptions that had come to govern rock & roll in the mid-’70s, punk also helped revive the ranting spirit that had informed the best political music and art through the 20th century, from the Situationalists to the Fugs. Among the first wave of British punks, none ranted with greater ferocity and sense of purpose than Crass, who actually were the anarchist firebrands the Sex Pistols pretended to be, though the brutal report of their music was rarely as impressive or as intelligent as their lyrics. Crass were massively influential during their 1977-1984 lifespan and beyond, both as musicians and as activists, and Jeffrey Lewis’ 12 Crass Songs is a surprising example of just how far their ideas have reached. Best known for his witty anti-folk tunes, musician and cartoonist Lewis first heard Crass while he was a college freshman in 1993, and the blunt wit and angry idealism of their songs made a powerful impression on him. As he began performing, Lewis began looking for ways to merge the fury of Crass’ broadsides with his acoustic-based music and he recorded some lo-fi interpretations of some of their tunes in his bedroom. A few years later, Lewis’ efforts have grown into 12 Crass Songs, in which Lewis and a handful of friends (most notably vocalist Helen Schreiner) have taken a dozen tunes by Crass and married them to arrangements that give them a far more melodic spin than they revealed in their original form. While electric guitars pop up here and there (and take center stage on “Big A, Little A”), most of 12 Crass Songs is dominated by acoustic guitar and Lewis’ sweet, slightly nasal vocals, but while he has succeeded in making these songs sound pretty and playful in a way they never were before, he’s also managed to carry forth their message with a surprising accuracy. 16 and Savaged [Bonus Track] $15.98 Silverhead’s second record, 16 and Savaged, finds the unit much tighter, yet like any great rock & roll band, they maintained that all-important swagger. The addition of guitarist Robbie Blunt gives the group an added punch, and he and Rod Davies proved to be one of glam’s best twin-guitar attacks. Vocalist Michael Des Barres steps up as well, and his Steve Marriott-bumping-into-Rod Stewart rasp never sounded better, before or since. The boys come out blazing on the groovy opener, “Hello New York,” nailing the Bolan strut and swiping the “Get It On” licks, while the gleefully sleazy “More Than Your Mouth Can Hold” has a definite Faces vibe, an intro borrowed from “Street Fighting Man,” and all the subtlety of a Gene Simmons lyric. In fact, the near-metal crunch of the album may have been an influence on the still developing Kiss sound. The lights lower for “Only You,” and while Des Barres shines, the song ultimately misses the mark. The newfound intensity of the group is most evident on “Bright Light,” a glam rock boogie monster that chugs along for a few minutes, before bursting at the seams for a photo finish that, paradoxically, sounds very much like a punk Led Zeppelin. The second half of the LP contains some fine and engaging rockers in “Heavy Hammer,” “Cartoon Princess,” and “Rock Out Claudette Rock Out,” but is in desperate need of a ballad to help with the pacing — ideally one on par with Silverhead’s “Wounded Heart” or “In Your Eyes.” Unfortunately, the weaker final numbers are made all the more obvious by this lacking element, keeping the disc a notch below their debut. 16 and Savaged turned out to be their final studio album, and Silverhead have all but been forgotten. Though not without its faults, the album is still one of the most exciting records from the glam period, and it, along with the group itself, should be remembered as one of the era’s finest. ~ Bart Bealmear, Rovi |
