Sided Eisenhower
Over time who is more likely to leave the conservative side of the Supreme Court: John Roberts or Samuel Alito

A. Chief Justice John Roberts

or

B. Associate Justice Samuel Alito

Please do not say neither because there are only two choices to select from. Keep in mind that Justices have the freedom to change ideology and this phenomenon has occurred several times throughout history. Calvin Coolidge, Dwight Eisenhower, George Bush, Gerald Ford, Herbert Hoover, John Kennedy, and Richard Nixon’s SCOTUS nominees changed somewhat during their respective judgeships.
Key phrase people: “more likely”
Key phrase people: “more likely”

Roberts.

Why? Roberts is more focused on precedent than ideological pressure. If a liberal precedent is set, Roberts will be more inclined to follow it than overturn it.

This is also why I do not think Roe v Wade will be overturned- because “conservative” judges like to keep with precedent. “liberal” judges are more likely to overturn precedent.

I put “liberal” and “conservative” in quotes because they are relative terms and don’t necessarily carry over into the political scheme.

Eisenhower and Churchill

Eisenhower and Churchill

$14.99

Although born and raised more than an ocean apart, Dwight Eisenhower and Winston Churchill—the two titans of the greatest generation—led remarkably parallel lives whose paths would intersect during history’s most harrowing days. Through their youth, education, and military training, both men experienced similar triumphs and failures that shaped their lives, though they met only for the first time upon the eve of war in 1941. Eisenhower and Churchill tells the magnificent story of these two great leaders and their exemplary partnership in war and peace. Through enlivened pages and fascinating anecdotes, author James C. Humes illuminates the human side of each man, who had more in common with each other than a world war. You’ll discover the extraordinary stories of how both were born to domineering mothers and failed fathers, both did not qualify for the military academy on the first try, both were traumatized by experiences in World War I, both were talented writers, and both lost a child in the very same year (1921). Remarkably, each man did not warm to the other at first; but as they worked together, their respect for one another grew to become a powerful friendship that lived long after the echoes of war had receded into the past. As allies, they shared a hatred for tyranny and led the world through the greatest war of the twentieth century. As friends, they shared a sense of trust and cooperation that should be raised as a standard. Containing new research and memorable insights, Eisenhower and Churchill brings to life the two lions of the twentieth centruy. "Who would not welcome an intimate book about Churchill and Eisenhower, and who is better situated to write it than Professor Humes, who knew them both, and studiously—and ardently—records their careers and their friendship?" — William F. Buckley Jr. "James C. Humes’s Eisenhower and Churchill is a wonderful dual biography laced with lively anecdotes, engaging prose, and shrewd analysis. A truly welcome addition to our growing literature on the Second World War." — Douglas Brinkley, professor of history and director of the Eisenhower Center, University of New Orleans From the Hardcover edition.

Eisenhower 1956

Eisenhower 1956

$5.82

A gripping tale of international intrigue and betray-al, Eisenhower 1956 is the white-knuckle story of how President Dwight D. Eisenhower guided the United States through the Suez Canal crisis of 1956. The crisis climaxed in a tumultuous nine-day period fraught with peril just prior to the 1956 presidential election, with Great Britain, France, and Israel invading Egypt while the Soviet Union ruthlessly crushed rebellion in Hungary. David A. Nichols, a leading expert on Eisenhower’s presidency, draws on hundreds of documents declassified in the last thirty years, enabling the reader to look over Ike’s shoulder and follow him day by day, sometimes hour by hour as he grappled with the greatest international crisis of his presidency. The author uses formerly top secret minutes of National Security Council and Oval Office meetings to illuminate a crisis that threatened to escalate into global conflict. Nichols shows how two life-threatening illnesses—Eisenhower’s heart attack in September 1955 and his abdominal surgery in June 1956—took the president out of action at critical moments and contributed to missteps by his administration. In 1956, more than two thirds of Western Europe’s oil supplies transited the Suez Canal, which was run by a company controlled by the British and French, Egypt’s former colonial masters. When the United States withdrew its offer to finance the Aswan Dam in July of that year, Egypt’s president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, nationalized the canal. Without Eisenhower’s knowledge, Britain and France secretly plotted with Israel to invade Egypt and topple Nasser. On October 29—nine days before the U.S. presidential election—Israel invaded Egypt, setting the stage for a “perfect storm.” British and French forces soon began bombing Egyptian ports and airfields and landing troops who quickly routed the Egyptian army. Eisenhower condemned the attacks and pressed for a cease-fire at the United Nations. Within days, in Hungary, Soviet troops and tanks were killing thousands to suppress that nation’s bid for freedom. When Moscow openly threatened to intervene in the Middle East, Eisenhower placed American military forces—including some with nuclear weapons—on alert and sternly warned the Soviet Union against intervention. On November 6, Election Day, after voting at his home in Gettysburg, Ike rushed back to the White House to review disturbing intelligence from Moscow with his military advisors. That same day, he learned that the United Nations had negotiated a cease-fire in the Suez war—a result, in no small measure, of Eisenhower’s steadfast opposition to the war and his refusal to aid the allies. In the aftermath of the Suez crisis, the United States effectively replaced Great Britain as the guarantor of stability in the Middle East. More than a half century later, that commitment remains the underlying premise for A

Newly discovered and declassified documents make for a surprising and revealing portrait of the president we thought we knew. Belittled by his critics as the babysitterinchief, Eisenhower ground down Joseph McCarthy, stimulated the economy to lift it from recession, and turned an 8 billion deficit in 1953 into a 500 million surplus in 1960. The President Eisenhower of popular imagination is a benign figure, armed with a putter, a winning smile, and little else. The Eisenhower of veteran journalist Jim Newtons rendering is shrewd, sentimental, and tempestuous. Admired as a general, he was a champion of peace. In Korea and Vietnam, in Quemoy and Berlin, his generals urged him to wage nuclear war. Time and again he considered the idea and rejected it. And it was Eisenhower who appointed the liberal justices Earl Warren and William Brennan and who then called in the military to enforce desegregation in the schools. From publisher description. Eisenhower in War and Peace

Eisenhower in War and Peace

$19.99

In his magisterial bestseller FDR, Jean Edward Smith gave us a fresh, modern look at one of the most indelible figures in American history. Now this peerless biographer returns with a new life of Dwight D. Eisenhower that is as full, rich, and revealing as anything ever written about America’s thirty-fourth president. As America searches for new heroes to lead it out of its present-day predicaments, Jean Edward Smith’s achievement lies in reintroducing us to a hero from the past whose virtues have become clouded in the mists of history. Here is Eisenhower the young dreamer, charting a course from Abilene, Kansas, to West Point, to Paris under Pershing, and beyond. Drawing on a wealth of untapped primary sources, Smith provides new insight into Ike’s maddening apprenticeship under Douglas MacArthur in Washington and the Philippines. Then the whole panorama of World War II unfolds, with Eisenhower’s superlative generalship forging the Allied path to victory through multiple reversals of fortune in North Africa and Italy, culminating in the triumphant invasion of Normandy. Smith also gives us an intriguing examination of Ike’s finances, details his wartime affair with Kay Summersby, and reveals the inside story of the 1952 Republican convention that catapulted him to the White House. Smith’s chronicle of Eisenhower’s presidential years is as compelling as it is comprehensive. Derided by his detractors as a somnambulant caretaker, Eisenhower emerges in Smith’s perceptive retelling as both a canny politician and a skillful, decisive leader. Smith convincingly portrays an Eisenhower who engineered an end to America’s three-year no-win war in Korea, resisted calls for preventative wars against the Soviet Union and China, and boldly deployed the Seventh Fleet to protect Formosa from invasion. This Eisenhower, Smith shows us, stared down Khrushchev over Berlin and forced the withdrawal of British, French, and Israeli forces from the Suez Canal. He managed not only to keep the peace—after Ike made peace in Korea, not one American soldier was killed in action during his tenure—but also to enhance America’s prestige in the Middle East and throughout the world. Domestically, Eisenhower reduced defense spending, balanced the budget, constructed the interstate highway system, and provided social security coverage for millions who were self-employed. Ike believed that traditional American values encompassed change and progress. Unmatched in insight, Eisenhower in War and Peace at last gives us an Eisenhower for our time—and for the ages. During the Cold War, few regions offered the American policy-makers a greater challenge than the Middle East. The Eisenhower administration’s attempt to balance its Cold War requirements with the demands of the new forces of nationalism established the blueprint of America’s policy toward the Middle East for the next four decades. In a richly comprehensive account, Dr. Takeyh employs new documentary evidence to reevaluate US policy toward the revolutionary Egyptian regime; the dynamics of the Anglo-American relations; the evolving nature of the Arab-Israeli conflict; and the Suez crisis and the Eisenhower Doctrine.

Dwight D. Eisenhower: Strategic Communicator

$125.78

This first booklength assessment of Ikes consummate skills as a communicator shows how, contrary to popular belief, he used language effectively as a weapon to achieve wellconceived strategic ends during the Cold War. Medhurst demonstrates how Eisenhower chose his audiences and times deliberately. This reference is an invaluable text and resource for students, scholars, and professionals in rhetorical studies, mass communications, public opinion, presidential studies, and Cold War history. The critical analysis shows that, despite caricatures of Eisenhower as fuzzy, muddleheaded, and obscure in his public speeches, he pondered over just the right words and employed halftruths, was ambiguous and indirect in a tactical manner. He knew exactly what he was doing and why. Texts of speeches exemplify how he served as a strategic communicator. A selected chronology points to his most important speeches. The bibliography is the most comprehensive to date on Eisenhower as a public speaker. The study is based on extensive use of primary research materials from the Eisenhower Library. Historic Photos of Dwight D. Eisenhower

Historic Photos of Dwight D. Eisenhower

$41.56

Dwight David Eisenhower is famous as both a soldier and as a statesman. Like George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant, Eisenhower the soldier commanded large American military forces and helped win a war that threatened his nation, and then served his country as president. Dwight Eisenhowers life is also the archetypal American story of the poor boy who rises as far as his talents and abilities enable him. I like Ike became a campaign slogan long after it was used to express the feelings of many of the people who met him in school, worked with, or served under him. This book, Historic Photos of Dwight D. Eisenhower, chronicles Eisenhowers amazing life in nearly two hundred photographs. These images and text help explain why another president said, America will always be a better nation . . . because Ike was with us when America needed him. Eisenhower and Harold Macmillan restored the ‘Special Relationship’ between the United States and Great Britain after the Suez Crisis of 1956 threatened to divide these longtime allies. The term Eisenhower Doctrine refers to a speech by President Dwight David Eisenhower on 5 January 1957, within a Special Message to the Congress on the Situation in the Middle East. Under the Eisenhower Doctrine, a country could request American economic assistance and/or aid from U.S. military forces if it was being threatened by armed aggression from another state. Eisenhower singled out the Soviet threat in his doctrine by authorizing the commitment of U.S. forces to secure and protect the territorial integrity and political independence of such nations, requesting such aid against overt armed aggression from any nation controlled by international communism. A Matter Of Justice: Eisenhower And The Beginning Of The Civil Rights Revolution

A Matter Of Justice: Eisenhower And The Beginning Of The Civil Rights Revolution

$5.89

Fifty years after President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered troops to Little Rock, Arkansas, to enforce a federal court order desegregating the city’s Central High School, a leading authority on Eisenhower presents an original and engrossing narrative that places Ike and his civil rights policies in dramatically new light. Historians such as Stephen Ambrose and Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., have portrayed Eisenhower as aloof, if not outwardly hostile, to the plight of African-Americans in the 1950s. It is still widely assumed that he opposed the Supreme Court’s landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision mandating the desegregation of public schools, that he deeply regretted appointing Earl Warren as the Court’s chief justice because of his role in molding Brown, that he was a bystander in Congress’s passage of the civil rights acts of 1957 and 1960, and that he so mishandled the Little Rock crisis that he was forced to dispatch troops to rescue a failed policy. In this sweeping narrative, David A. Nichols demonstrates that these assumptions are wrong. Drawing on archival documents neglected by biographers and scholars, including thousands of pages newly available from the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Nichols takes us inside the Oval Office to look over Ike’s shoulder as he worked behind the scenes, prior to Brown, to desegregate the District of Columbia and complete the desegregation of the armed forces. We watch as Eisenhower, assisted by his close collaborator, Attorney General Herbert Brownell, Jr., sifted through candidates for federal judgeships and appointed five pro-civil rights justices to the Supreme Court and progressive judges to lower courts. We witness Eisenhower crafting civil rights legislation, deftly building a congressional coalition that passed the first civil rights act in eighty-two years, and maneuvering to avoid a showdown with Orval Faubus, the governor of Arkansas, over desegregation of Little Rock’s Central High. Nichols demonstrates that Eisenhower, though he was a product of his time and its backward racial attitudes, was actually more progressive on civil rights in the 1950s than his predecessor, Harry Truman, and his successors, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Eisenhower was more a man of deeds than of words and preferred quiet action over grandstanding. His cautious public rhetoric — especially his legalistic response to Brown — gave a misleading impression that he was not committed to the cause of civil rights. In fact, Eisenhower’s actions laid the legal and political groundwork for the more familiar breakthroughs in civil rights achieved in the 1960s. Fair, judicious, and exhaustively researched, A Matter of Justice is the definitive book on Eisenhower’s civil rights policies that every presidential historian and future biographer of Ike will have to contend with.

Eisenhower by Sixsmith, E. K. G. [Paperback]

Eisenhower by Sixsmith, E. K. G. [Paperback]

$30.23

In the making of Allied Force Headquarters into a truly single Allied interservice headquarters, Eisenhower started on a task that was to continue throughout the warand beyond. Its fulfillment was perhaps more than any other his special contribution to the practice of war. Because he did not actually command troops in battle, Eisenhower has occasionally been underestimated by military writers. The Eisenhower volume in the classic Military Commanders series clearly demonstrates that his organization of the Allied effort in Europe owed nothing to the practices followed in World War I and represented a decisive breakthrough in the conduct of war, particularly in coalition warfare. Ike was a military manager without equal, who also had the ability to inspire confidence and loyalty among his subordinates of all nationalities. Eisenhower is most closely associated with the military principle of Unity of Command, and his doctrines are more relevant today than ever, in the world of coalition armies and hightech battlefields. General Sixsmiths comprehensive description of Eisenhowers World War II actions makes for particularly interesting comparisons with the lessons forgotten in Vietnam and reapplied in the Persian Gulf. Presidents from Eisenhower through Johnson, 1953-1969

Presidents from Eisenhower through Johnson, 1953-1969

$88

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Communism and the Cold War pervaded almost every aspect of American policy and concern. Eisenhower’s Highway Act sought to strengthen America with the sort of roads system and military advantage Germany’s Autobahn provided in World War II; Kennedy looked to space, the Peace Corps, and the schools to improve America’s actual and perceived status in the eyes of the world; LBJ continually found concerns about Southeast Asia pressing in upon him notwithstanding his desire to found a new Great Society in the United States. However, despite the Cold War and demands of international politics, these three presidents were continually involved in critical debates about the domestic future of America, and their roles and victories in these debates have left deep impressions upon American society. This volume provides readers with access to the primary documentsboth foreign and domesticthat reflect the debates that have had such a strong influence in shaping the United States. This resource covers thirty-two key issues and initiatives of the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson presidencies. An introductory overview of each president’s administration provides a useful window through which to assess the specific debates and documents addressed, and each of these individual issues is also supplemented by a brief introductory discussion. Among the issues covered are: Eisenhower’s attempt to establish a new look for national defense, the Eisenhower doctrine, and the National Defense Education Act; Kennedy’s Alliance for Progress and Peace Corps programs, his role in Cuba, his plans for America in space, and his work on arms control and the Limited Test Ban Treaty; and Johnson’s Civil Rights Act, Model Cities Program, war on poverty, and role in the ground and air wars in Vietnam. A timeline provides a chronological backdrop for the subject, and recommended readings following each section offer helpful direction for further study.

Even so the West German-American alliance was taxing for both sides during much of the first two decades of the Cold War. Ultimately despite frequent significant challenges to the alliance from without and within the two allies managed to achieve a positive and productive relationship – Eisenhower and Adenauer explains how they did so.In both capitals the top foreign policy makers were deeply involved in the conduct of what they viewed as a vital bilateral alliance with both President Dwight Eisenhower and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer taking the lead in his own government. For the Americans a rearmed FRG tightly bound to the West was the bedrock of any European security policy that could contain the Soviet Union for the long-term. For the West German government their relationship with the United States was the bedrock of rehabilitation and indeed survival as an independent country.
