Stage Trick

How long will my puppy be in the chewing stage?

I have a half border collie/beagle mix puppy. She chews everything, and we have tried all the tricks. Bitter apple spray, buying her raw hides, keeping her contained when we are out etc. I am on the verge of getting her a muzzle. She is about 6 and half months old. How long do you think I will be dealing with this stage of her life? SHE CHEWED UP MY COUCH!

My dog chewed everything–glass Christmas ornaments, Brillo pads, etc. for about the first year and half. It was driving my crazy! Since then she has calmed down and only rarely chews.

The only way I got through it was by ‘puppy-proofing’ the house. I shut up valuable and harmful objects into other rooms with the door shut while I was gone. Then I left plenty of chew objects in the living room for her to play with.

I’ve never had a dog chew the couch, though! Sorry. I’m sure the idea of muzzling went through my head as well–but its not safe. You are only supposed to muzzle a dog for short periods of times (walks, etc.). Muzzling for long periods of time could kill the dog because dogs sweat through their mouths.

I’m not a fan of crating. But it sounds like either doing that or dealing with chewed up furniture for a while, then replacing it when the pain of cutting teeth is over.

So many people on here have answered that simple training will work–I’m not so sure they’ve had puppies! I always corrected my dog–when I walked in the door she knew she was in trouble and hid under the table. Its just the pain of cutting teeth. You are at least 1/3 of the way past the problem, but I can’t tell you it gets easier because it doesn’t. I hope this helps you make a decision!
