I keep hearing this theory that a martial art known as pankration influenced all asian martial arts.?
I think it is false because during the Zhou dynasty, the martial art known as Shuai Jiao was taught to the soldiers as well as for military strategy and archery during the winter. It eventually converted to a sport in the Qin dynasty.
Evidence:Possibly the Records of the Grand Historian, and Classic of Rites.
Shuai Jiao is correct as you have stated. Pankration never had the influence or battle hardness which makes Shuai Jiao so difficult to fend off and to master. Pankration may have influenced a few Asian MA but surely NOT a majority. Pankration is a minor player in the history of Asian MA. Shuai Jiao has a well documented and proven influence on Tai Chi(All Styles), Daitio Ryu…. and as well as both Southern and Northern Styles of Kung Fu as well as India’s MA.

Asian North American Identities $17.55 The nine essays in Asian North American Identities explore how Asian North Americans are no longer caught between worlds of the old and the new, the east and the west, and the south and the north. Moving beyond national and diasporic models of ethnic identity to focus on the individual feelings and experiences of those who are not part of a dominant white majority, the essays collected here draw from a wide range of sources, including novels, art, photography, poetry, cinema, theatre, and popular culture. The book illustrates how Asian North Americans are developing new ways of seeing and thinking about themselves by eluding imposed identities and creating spaces that offer alternative sites from which to speak and imagine. Contributors are Jeanne Yu-Mei Chiu, Patricia Chu, Rocio G. Davis, Donald C. Goellnicht, Karlyn Koh, Josephine Lee, Leilani Nishime, Caroline Rody, Jeffrey J. Santa Ana, Malini Johar Schueller, and Eleanor Ty. |

Looking for Asian America $39.95 In search of contemporary Asian America, celebrated photographer Wing Young HuieÑthe only member of his family not born in ChinaÑtraveled with his wife, Tara, through nearly forty states to explore and document the funny, touching, and sometimes strange intersection of Asian American and American cultures. Looking for Asian America illustrates their rich and surprising journey across the United States.Through HuieÕs eyes, keenly aware of his own Midwestern roots and perspective, we witness such images as a Vietnamese Elvis, Miss Congeniality on her cell phone in San FranciscoÕs Chinatown, a Hmong street sign in rural North Carolina, a meditating Falun Gong protestor in Washington, D.C., a bubble tea Valley Girl, and a Chinese theme park in Orlando. HuieÕs camera captures ABCs (American-born Chinese), FOBs (fresh off the boat), and a self-described Òredneck Chinese restaurant ownerÓ near the Okefenokee Swamp. Taken together the photographs reveal a complex portrait of the U.S. cultural landscape, and their dignified elegance invites a closer, deeper look.Accompanied by the personal reflections of both Wing and Tara Huie, the nearly one hundred spectacular photographs tell a story that both mirrors and contradicts stereotypes of Asian Americans, ultimately questioning what it means to be ethnic and American in the twenty-first century.Wing Young Huie documents the socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural realities of his home state, Minnesota. His photographs have been exhibited at the Walker Art Center, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Minnesota Museum of American Art, and he is a recipient of the Bush Artist and McKnight fellowships. He is the author of Frogtown: Photographs and Conversations in an Urban Neighborhood and Lake Street USA. |

East Asian Cinemas $89 Cinemas from East Asia are among the most exciting and influential in the world. They are attracting popular and critical attention on a global scale, with films from the region circulating as art house, cult, blockbuster and 'extreme' cinema, or as Hollywood remakes. This book explores developments in the global popularity of East Asian cinema, from Chinese martial arts, through Japanese horror, to the burgeoning new Korean cinema, with particular emphasis on crossovers, remakes, hybrids and co-productions. It examines changing cinematic traditions in Asia alongside the 'Asianisation' of western cinema. It explores the dialogue not only between 'East' and 'West', but between different cinemas in the Asia Pacific. What do these trends mean for global cinema? How are co-productions and crossover films changing the nature of Hollywood and East Asian cinemas? The book includes in-depth studies of Park Chan-wook, 'Infernal Affairs', 'Seven Samurai', and 'Princess Mononoke'. |

Annual Review of South Asian Languages and Linguistics 2007 $176 South Asia is home to a large number of languages and dialects. Although linguists working on this region have made significant contributions to our understanding of language, society, and language in society on a global scale, there is as yet no recognized international forum for the exchange of ideas amongst linguists working on South Asia. The Annual Review of South Asian Languages and Linguistics is designed to be just that forum. It brings together empirical and theoretical research and serves as a testing ground for the articulation of new ideas and approaches which may be grounded in a study of South Asian languages but which have universal applicability. Each volume will have four major sections: I. Invited contributions consisting of state-of-the-art essays on research in South Asian languages. II. Refereed open submissions focusing on relevant issues and providing various viewpoints. III. Reports from around the world, book reviews and abstracts of doctoral theses. |
