#1′s: The Warner Brothers Years $11.99 There are a couple of statistics in the late Conway Twitty’s career that are rather astonishing: the first is that he scored 52 number one hits in the 30 years between 1958 and 1988. Just how astonishing can be illustrated this way: 52 number ones is more than the Beatles, more than Elvis Presley, and more than Frank Sinatra. The second — and what might appear minor in comparison but is actually more so — is that ten of them were between 1982 and 1988, near the end of his major-label recording career for Warner Bros. Twitty scored during every major change in the music, from honky tonk to countrypolitan to outlaw to urban cowboy to the dawn of the new traditionalist era. The true influence of Twitty has yet to be recognized, but he was a major player when country music was at its most invisible. In fact, it can be said that Conway was countrypolitan and made the whole mess cross over into the mainstream for the very first time. These ten tracks do not measure Twitty’s best work. But they do show he could sing any kind of song and put enough behind it to make it utterly believable. These ten tunes do contain a few real treasures, such as “I Don’t Know a Thing About Love (The Moon Song)” by Harlan Howard and the smash “Slow Hand” (that scored big for the Pointer Sisters in 1981, before Twitty cut it and remade it in his own image). Also here, from the Warner period, Twitty had the audacity to cut Amanda McBroom’s “The Rose,” a career-defining moment for Bette Midler as the title track for the 1979 film she starred in. The final number here, something written especially for Twitty, is “The Clown,” a ballad that showcases that rough but utterly tender baritone for all it’s worth. While their announcement stunned contemporary country fans, recent albums showed the pair beginning to rely too heavily on their formula and not enough on new ideas. Still, as far as the industry was concerned, they went out on top. #1s…and Then Some contains 30 tracks spread over two discs and includes two new songs. Disc one opens with Ronnie Dunn and Terry McBride’s barroom and stadium rock killer “Honky Tonk Stomp,” which opens the set with special guest guitar blazer Billy Gibbonsof ZZ Top, and disc two opens with the pair’s own “Indian Summer,” a midtempo ballad that’s as fine a summation of their collective career as listeners are likely to get. Dozens of familiar cuts are here, from their first smash “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” to the gorgeous cover of B.W. Stevenson’s “My Maria” and a slew of other hits and B-sides — including “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” and “If You See Him/If You See Her,” both with Reba McEntire. While it’s true that many of these tracks have been collected on the two previous hits collections, this is the first time that all the number ones have been in one place, and it’s the best argument there is for the legacy they leave behind. Remember, this duo originally consisted of two solo artists who became a group as the result of an arranged marriage by their record company; the combination worked better than anyone ever dreamed. His early singles (which are collected here on his debut album) were strutting, ultra-hooky songs that mixed up hip-hop, rock, funk, and pop into a very appealing sound fronted by Black? s smooth and insistent vocals. ? Yours? and ? Alone? are both very inventive tracks, and easy-to-digest songs that fans of radio pop could get into, “Symphonies,” which is his high point as an artist so far, slows things down and wraps Black? s voice in a beautiful string sample, and shows he can deliver some real emotion. In other words, Black? s singles are a perfect manifestation of wonky pop. ((Un)) works almost as well. The singles are the best tracks, but there is plenty of competition. The rocking, dancefloor filler “Pump My Pumps,” the stuttering, fake hip-hop jam “I Love Life,” and the fun and huge-sounding “U + Me =” all come very close to dethroning the previously released singles for top honors. Black? s arrangements are always fresh-sounding, never too glossy, and filled with surprising little touches that let you know you are in the hands of a whiz kid, not just a pop singer. Yanks have never been terribly appreciative of the music that originated in their homeland, which might have been a contributing factor to Miller’s marginal popularity in the U.S. He was a fairly major star in the U.K., though, big enough for EMI to remaster, repackage, and reissue his catalog (at least for the titles on their Chrysalis imprint) into this generous four-disc box. They even include a few rare singles and, more importantly, the original mix of his second effort, High Life, along with the previously released one, expanding this set’s total to eight albums from 1973 through 1980. Because he has recorded just a handful of platters since, and only one after his debilitating brain hemorrhage in 1994, this covers the bulk of his output and all of his best-known songs. The playing time of each runs over 75 minutes, yet there are songs missing that were included as extras reissued on the individually expanded editions by Eagle/Repertoire in 1994. Not including those cuts, most of them as good and some even better than the ones on the albums they were appended to, is a major miss for a compilation that implies completeness. Regardless, the spiffed-up audio is crisp and warm, and while some of the material is spotty, Miller’s performance is consistently energized and enthusiastic. From the gritty pub rock of his Brinsley Schwarz-backed debut to the raw soul of the Allen Toussaint-assisted High Life to the harder-edged rock of The Rock and the somewhat slick Easy Money, there is a plethora of terrific material here. Miller is as impressive singing ballads as tough, Faces-styled rockers, which makes each release reverberate with an ebb and flow making even some of the filler — and make no mistake, there is a good-sized helping of that — worth hearing.
