i dont want it to thunder storm next week :(
are meteorologist’s always right??

This time of year St. Thomas gets a lot of rain as this is their Monsoon season. Due to daytime heating the clouds will usually build up everyday to bring Thundershowers later in the day. This is normal for this time of year. It still gets hot (90′sF) but it is very humid during the day and all night 80′sF).

Thomas Aquinas

Thomas Aquinas

$50

The work of Thomas Aquinas has always enjoyed a privileged position as a pillar of Catholic theology, but for centuries his standing among western philosophers was less sure. Today, Aquinas's work is recognized as a cornerstone of the western philosophical tradition. This book offers a full-scale introduction to Aquinas's philosophy. Brian Davies has collected in one volume the best recent essays on Aquinas by some of the world's foremost scholars of medieval philosophy. Taken together, they illuminate the entire spectrum of Aquinas's thought: philosophy of nature, logic, metaphysics, natural theology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, and ethics. The essays are philosophically solid, readable, informative, critical, and evaluative of the texts of Aquinas. Davies frames the essays with a detailed introduction that provides an account of Aquinas's life and works, as well as of his major philosophical conclusions.

A Beautiful Offering: Returning God's Love with Your Life

A Beautiful Offering: Returning God’s Love with Your Life

$4.99

From The Publisher:Drawing wisdom from the Beatitudes, A Beautiful Offering is a call for women to live their lives as grateful offerings to the Father. For many years Angela Thomas thought of the Beatitudes as a list of Gotta Be’s, as in: Gotta be meek. Gotta be merciful. And when she compared her life to the standard they set, she always felt that she came up short. But through God’s great mercy, she has come to see this passage instead as a roster of When You Are’s. When you are meek, there is a spiritual inheritance. When you are merciful, you will be shown mercy. This shift in thinking has led Thomas to understand that God does not require perfection, but rather our gracious obedience. In His eyes, our lives–complete with mistakes, blemishes, and imperfections–are A Beautiful Offering.About The Author:Angela Thomas is the mother of four children, speaker, teacher, and best-selling author of Prayers for the Mother to Be, Prayers for Mothers of Newborns, Tender Mercy for a Mother’s Soul, Do You Think I’m Beautiful?, and A Beautiful Offering. Angela has a passion for encouraging women, who are drawn to her because of her honesty, humor, conversational style, and storytelling ability. Angela received her master’s degree from Dallas Theological Seminary.

A Brief, Liberal, Catholic Defense of Abortion

A Brief, Liberal, Catholic Defense of Abortion

$15.28

The Catholic Church has always opposed abortion, but–contrary to popular belief–not always for the same reasons. This tightly argued, historically grounded study sets out to demonstrate that a pro-choice stance, now held by a significant minority of Catholics, is as fully justified by Catholic thought as an antiabortion view. A Brief, Liberal, Catholic Defense of Abortion argues that the current Catholic antiabortion stance is justified neither by modern embryology nor by ancient church teachings. Combining up-to-date information on fetal development with a thorough grasp of the works of the church’s early thinkers (such as Sts. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas), Daniel A. Dombrowski and Robert Deltete expose crucial contradictions between the early and the modern Church’s views of abortion.

A Child's Christmas in Wales

A Child’s Christmas in Wales

There are always Uncles at Christmas. And Aunts, of course, who might sing a little loudly after dinner. There are the neighborhood cats sleek and long as jaguars and horrible-whiskered, the carols to sing at eerie houses, the Useful Presents and the Useless Presents, and the endless snow shawling out of the ground. First published in Harper’s Bazaar some fifty years ago, A Child’s Christmas in Wales showcases Dylan Thomas’s genius for language and remains the poet’s most popular prose work in the United States. Chris Raschka’s fluid torn-paper illustrations honor the poet’s words, evoking their musical cadences and bringing us a fresh appreciation for this most lyric work.

A Pastor’s Sketches: Conversations with Anxious Souls Concerning the Way of Salvation

$21.46

A Pastor’s Sketches is a sobering and challenging reminder that the Holy Spirit is the true agent of conversion. This book is urgently needed today when so much of our evangelism is patterned after current marketing methods. It has deeply convicted me to always seek to be in tune with the Holy Spirit as I minister to others. -Jerry Bridges, author of numerous books, With the decline of biblical Christianity in the 19th century God raised up Asahel Nettleton to be the evangelist who displayed the power of the old ways of bringing the gospel effectively to men and women. In the pastoral ministry it was the skill of Ichabod Spencer who patiently and wisely helped bring many to find rest and maturity in Jesus Christ. He was a pastor’s pastor and the fruit of a lifetime’s care for God’s people was given to the church in this invaluable book. -Geoff Thomas, pastor, author

Abysmal

Abysmal

$34.39

People rely on reason to think about and navigate the abstract world of human relations in much the same way they rely on maps to study and traverse the physical world. Starting from that simple observation, renowned geographer Gunnar Olsson offers in Abysmal an astonishingly erudite critique of the way human thought and action have become deeply immersed in the rhetoric of cartography and how this cartographic reasoning allows the powerful to map out other people s lives. A spectacular reading of Western philosophy, religion, and mythology that draws on early maps and atlases, Plato, Kant, and Wittgenstein, Thomas Pynchon, Gilgamesh, and Marcel Duchamp, Abysmal is itself a minimalist guide to the terrain of Western culture. Olsson roams widely but always returns to the problems inherent in reason, to question the outdated assumptions and fixed ideas that thinking cartographically entails. A work of ambition, scope, and sharp wit, Abysmal will appeal to an eclectic audience to geographers and cartographers, but also to anyone interested in the history of ideas, culture, and art.

Alphabutt

Alphabutt

$11.99

Since Kimya Dawson’s adult albums are filled with cutesy-pie rhymes and schoolyard singalongs, it makes perfect sense that the singer/songwriter has given herself over to a full-on children’s album. It also makes perfect sense that it’s called Alphabutt, as Dawson has always shown a propensity for juvenile jokes, and that title should also be a tip-off that just about every other song on this 15-track LP sports a joke about farting. Kimya doesn’t limit herself to farts: there’s poop and pee, even references to growing hair “down there,” all delivered with a child’s fascination with discovering their body — and sometimes delivered with a couple kids singing along, too. Such enthusiastic participation from a few tuneless kids highlights the fact that Dawson designed Alphabutt purely for young kids. These are not songs for the parents, nor are these tunes meant to educate or even entertain: these are the kinds of songs that kids chant in the backseat when they mean to annoy their parents. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Always & Forever

Always & Forever

$5.98

Randy Travis’ first album, 1986′s Storms of Life was one of those rare debuts that was nearly perfect: a confident, assured statement of purpose that set expectations for a follow-up almost too high. Remarkably, his second album Always & Forever — delivered just a year later — met those expectations and rivaled its predecessor in its quality. If there’s just a slightly increased inclination to slick, radio-ready productions and an emphasis on ballads, the songs themselves are sturdy, classically styled country tunes, whether they’re tales of heartache or devotion and they’re grounded by Travis, whose nuanced baritone — bearing a definite Lefty Frizzell influence but possessing his own distinctive idiosyncrasies — cuts through whatever production glaze there is here. But that glaze is slight — it’s just a hallmark of the era and when compared to other records in the charts in 1987, Always & Forever sounds positively lean — and the songs (including the chart-toppers “Forever and Ever, Amen,” “I Won’t Need You Anymore (Always and Forever”) and “Too Gone Too Long”) are great, and through it all Travis proves that he’s one of the great country singers of the ’80s, if not the greatest. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

New – Thomas Jefferson, in these letters to Americans and the citizens of the world, is as always a radical and visionary idealist. He is also outraged at contemporary America. Yet, his assertions are in the end even more shocking for their spiritual optimism. On matters of the human soul and spirit, his thinking has evolved well beyond where he is remembered historically. He is also writing to us cognizant of our future as follows: America means love. The word America means love. It is time, at

Over the two hundred-plus years that separate us, these connections are often surprising and always fascinating. Burke turns the signers from historical icons into flesh-and-blood people: Some were shady financial manipulators, most were masterful political operators, a few were good human beings, and some were great men. The network that links them to us is also peopled by all sorts, from spies and assassins to lovers and adulterers, inventors and artists. The ties may be more direct for some of us than others, but we are all linked in some way to these founders of our nation.
If you enjoyed Martin Sheen as the president on television’s The West Wing, then you’re connected to founder Josiah Bartlett. The connection from signer Bartlett to Sheen includes John Paul Jones; Judge William Cooper, father of James Fenimore; Sir Thomas Brisbane, governor of New South Wales; an incestuous astronomer; an itinerant math teacher; early inventors of television; and pioneering TV personality Bishop Fulton J. On the surface, all Primus albums seem to sound alike, especially to outsiders (read: anyone who either respects the group but doesn’t get them, or the minority that actively hates them, particularly Les Claypool’s demented comedy schtick). That’s not really true, even if the same basic elements remain in place each time, no matter who is in the band. And Primus has never tried to shake things up as much as they do on their seventh album, AntiPop. Primus enlisted a dizzying array of collaborators — Stewart Copeland, Tom Waits, James Hetfield, Tom Morello, Jim Martin, Matt Stone, Martina, and Fred Durst among them — all in the purpose of challenging themselves to find different dimensions to its music. Some play or sing, some produce, but it’s amazing how much each individual guest changes the tone of the music. It’s not always for the best, but it keeps things fresh, if not necessarily coherent. Though there are a couple of good lyrics here, this is by and large an album about music; it would have been even better if it had been primarily an instrumental album, actually, since the vocals get in the way occasionally. By now, the popping bass, dissonance, and angular riffs don’t seem like schtick, but the lyrics and singing do. Still, it’s possible to get past those and hear AntiPop as one of Primus’ most ambitious and best efforts. No, they’re not always successful, but no two songs sound the same, and some collaborations are among the best things Primus has ever recorded. AntiPop is dense music that isn’t afraid to be goofy or fall on its face — and even if it’s not to your particular taste, it’s hard not to respect this. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

The book is illustrated with Mehinaku drawings of ritual texts and myths, as well as with photographs of the villagers taking part in both everyday and ceremonial activities.

Azerbaijan Diary

Azerbaijan Diary

$36.95

This underground classic tells the story of oil-rich Azerbaijan’s first years of independence from Moscow. Goltz’s vivid, personal account, filled with memorable portraits of individuals in high places and low, carries the reader from the battlefront to the oilfield, the voting booth to the negotiating table, always with an astute sense of how it all fits into the geopolitical firmament. In its first years as an independent state, the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan was a prime example of post-Soviet chaos — beset by coups and civil strife, and losing the Karabakh war of secession, with a fifth of its territory occupied by Armenian troops. Azerbaijan may be endowed with vast oil reserves, but it also bestrides one of the greatest ethnic, religious, and political faultlines in the world.Thomas Goltz became an accidental witness to Azerbaijan’s inglorious history-in-the- making when he was detoured into Baku in mid-1991 — and decided to stay. This record of his years there alternates in style between tragedy and farce. Throughout, the intensity of immediate experience is balanced by an acute awareness of contemporaneous events in Karabakh and Nakhjivan, Georgia and Armenia, Russia and Chechnya, Iran and Turkey, Washington and Houston.

Beyond the Body: The Boundaries of Medicine and English Renaissance Drama

Beyond the Body: The Boundaries of Medicine and English Renaissance Drama

$77.67

This is a book about two things: medical instability and Renaissance drama. Medical stories are always also social stories, and William Kerwin presents five case studies of how the fragile and dynamic relationship between the medical and the nonmedical played out in Renaissance England. Renaissance drama richly staged that process, presenting medical practitioners in ways that undermined any attempt to imagine them as self-defining. Playwrights consistently unmasked fictions of medical autonomy, emphasizing that a variety of social narratives competed in the shaping of the medical culture. Drawing on research in the social history of medicine as well as a wide-ranging collection of primary narratives of medical encounters, Kerwin pursues the stories of several medical groups. Specifically, he examines women healers in terms of the changing place of women in the public sphere; the connections between drug sellers–apothecaries and alchemists–and an emerging modern economy; the role barbers and surgeons played in early modern concerns for protecting a new sense of privacy and interiority; the ways physicians defined their professional primacy through the language of theaters and actors; and the ways individual patients employed rhetorics of diagnosis as a way of participating in sectarian religious battles. The study moves from the dynamics of medical politics to the work drama does in exposing those dynamics. In addition to offering astute readings of works by Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, the book pays substantial attention to plays by Samuel Daniel, John Fletcher, John Ford, Thomas Heywood, John Lyly, Philip Massinger, and John Webster. Beyond the Body complements the wealth of recentcritical attention given to the body. Kerwin attends to a different sort of material politics; as the book’s title suggests, he asks a reader interested in the politics of medicine to look not at the practitioner treating the body but at the social forces influencing the practitioner. New – The story of Joan of Arc has always held a special fascination for writers – among them Voltaire, Mark Twain, George Bernard Shaw and Jean Anouilh. Here Thomas Keneally transforms the legend, presenting a Joan who is at once a tough radical, an instinctive soldier, a nagging prophet and a touchingly vulnerable girl – a haunting and compelling heroine framed by the tumultuous times in which she lived.

Bloody Mary's Martyrs: The Story of England's Terror

Bloody Mary’s Martyrs: The Story of England’s Terror

$9.3

New – Mary, the daughter of Henry VIII, was crowned queen in 1553. Always sickly, she died in 1558, but her short reign was entirely devoted to restoring Catholicism to England by whatever means were necessary. Her brutal methods earned her the name she has carried ever since, “Bloody Mary”. This is the story of her persecution of men such as Ridley and Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, both of whom were burned at the stake, as were some 300 others who refused to renounce their Protestan

Blue Break Beats, Vol. 3

Blue Break Beats, Vol. 3

$16.98

Blue Note’s Blue Break Beats series spotlights songs from their vaults that have been sampled for various hip-hop and techno tracks. As a result, it’s been one of their most popular and entertaining series of the ’90s, and for good reason — this funky soul-jazz lends itself to compilations much easier than bop, since the groove is the only thing that matters. Unfortunately, the compilers of Vol. 3 don’t always keep that in mind. Much of the collection is weighed down with vocal cuts like Shirley Bassey’s “Light My Fire” and Jackie McLean’s “Soul,” which intercuts nearly free bop with beat poetry. While these are interesting in their own right, they stop the momentum of the disc cold. However, the remainder of Blue Break Beats, Vol. 3 is on par with its two predecessors, featuring funky soul-jazz from the likes of Cannonball Adderley and Lou Donaldson. These are the tracks that can be sampled effectively, and they make for excellent listening in their own right. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

DAUGHTRY snap back to life with 2011? s Break the Spell. Working once again with producer Howard Benson, a collaborator since the early days when it wasn? t clear whether Chris Daughtry? s charms would translate outside of American Idol, DAUGHTRY add color back into their desaturated post-grunge, embracing their lineage as radio-ready rockers. Often, Break the Spell harks back to the glory days of the late ? 80s, when rockers played golden gods all for the sake of video cameras, secure in the knowledge that heavy rotation on MTV and AOR radio would shift millions of CDs. So it is with Break the Spell: there? s a candied confidence to DAUGHTRY? s swagger, they? re unconcerned with sobriety, they? re happy to have their riffs over-muscled, happy to have every speckle of their production sparkle. It? s still loud music — both by design and brickwalled mastering — but Daughtry has softened his defining trait as a rocker: he? s dampened his dourness, choosing to dabble in levity at least as far as surface sonics are concerned. It? s hard to imagine the Daughtry of 2006 acquiescing to the disco-rock on the syncopated stomp ? Outta My Head,? but here it? s part of a record colored by shellacked harmonies — arriving via vocals and six-strings — ambient echoes, and acoustics, all working in service of melody, not brawn. It? s as if DAUGHTRY believe they? ve earned their rock & roll stripes so they no longer need to prove that they? re for real — they can just ease into the role of sugary arena rockers that they? ve always been destined to be. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Broadway: The Great Original Cast Recordings

Broadway: The Great Original Cast Recordings

$25.99

To commemorate the end of the century, Sony Music assembled the gargantuan 26-disc box set Sony Music 100 Years: Soundtrack for a Century. The title was imposing, as was the idea behind it — to chronicle the life of the oldest record label in the music industry. To be clear, Sony Music has not existed for 100 years, but the heart of its catalog, Columbia Records, was founded early in the 20th century. Sony acquired Columbia and its various subsidiaries in the late ’80s, purchasing one of the richest catalogs in pop history, as the box set proves again and again. Sony realized that most consumers wouldn’t invest in a 26-disc box, no matter how impressive it was, so they simultaneously released a series of 12 genre-specific double-disc sets that culled highlights from the box. That left two discs exclusive to the box, which was appropriate, since anyone who spends over $300 on an album deserves a little bonus. As it turns out, the double-disc sets are every bit as impressive as the big box, perhaps more so, because they’re easily digestible. Even so, the scope of the 41-track Broadway: Great Original Cast Recordings is impressive. Columbia and its subsidiaries were always at the forefront of Broadway cast recordings, which is evident from this set, which captures highlights from an amazing number of shows, including selections from Show Boat, Kiss Me, Kate, South Pacific, Pal Joey, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Gypsy, The Sound of Music, Bye Bye Birdie, Camelot, Cabaret, A Chorus Line, Annie, and Will Rogers Follies, among others. These are all taken from the original Broadway casts and, as such, provide a good capsule history of the Great White Way. Yes, some major performers and musicals are missing, but this gets the essence of its history, while being enormously entertaining. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

True to the cute, winking title of her Heads Up debut, the glamorous and funky Dutch sax superstar offers a tasty little bagful of everything to please the funky, smooth, and exotic taste buds of jazz and R&B fans around the world. There’s feisty, blistering jamming with multiple horn textures and jangling guitars (the sizzling opening track “Candy”), easy grooving, melodic old-school soul (“L.A. Citylights”), raw and thumping, brassy party singalongs (“Music = Love,” the buoyant and breezy “Summertime”), and even a scorching Latin/Caribbean island dance-along (“La Cabana”) and a jaunt to Jamaica (the jumpy, lilting “Smokin’ Gun”). Dulfer’s always had a little of that classic David Sanborn touch in her sound, and that inspiration shines through on the low-key, late-night vibing of “11:58,” one of a few rich ballads here. The dreamy ’70s jazz-soul trip “Soulsax” draws the listener back, ever so subtly, to the Earth, Wind & Fire style of balladeering. All of these add up to a truly inspired and energized date that gloriously brings Dulfer back to the hard hitting, emotionally compelling magic she achieved on her second album, 1993′s Sax-A-Go-Go. She’d been a consistent hitmaker since then, but was never quite as freewheeling and playful as she was in the early days. In the intervening years, Dulfer developed from a strong natural pop player into a true jazz stylist and improviser, and the maturity shines through even as the party continues. Best of all, she thankfully pulls 180 degrees away from the over the top electronic production of 2003′s Right in My Soul, a disc that, although meaning well, covered her rich R&B and jazz heart with too much machinery. While Dulfer collaborates with longtime partners Thomas Bank and Ulco Bed, keyboardist, bassist, and vocalist Chance Howard — a longtime member of Prince’s band — adds an extra charge to the mix with the same bounce and fire that he added to her live performances in the early 2000s. Chickenfoot

Supergroups are often motley groups seemingly formed at the end of an after-concert party but few are quite as strange as Chickenfoot, an endeavor featuring Van Halen’s Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, guitar legend Joe Satriani, and drummer Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. These four musicians are tied together by their many years playing in the arena rock trenches, a circuit that doesn’t necessarily yield common musical ground although it does lend its veterans a certain knack for pleasing crowds. This eagerness is evident on the band’s eponymous 2009 debut, which should come as no surprise seeing that Sammy Hagar has never seen a party he couldn’t rock, but this mentality doesn’t quite jibe with Satriani’s immaculate, tightly controlled playing. Satch always seems to want to burst out but can’t help leaning on precision, a problem that’s the polar opposite to Hagar’s let-it-all-hang-out philosophy, and this dichotomy is mirrored in the rhythm section, where Anthony’s chugging bass doesn’t quite fill the gaps Smith leaves. All this means is that Chickenfoot’s big picture is roughly in place but the pieces don’t quite fit. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Ordinary people don”t experience history as it is taught by historians. They live across the convenient chronological divides we impose on the past. The same people who lived through the Civil War and the eradication of slavery also dealt with the hardships of Reconstruction, so why do we almost always treat them separately? In this groundbreaking new book, renowned historian Thomas C. Holt challenges this form to tell the story of generations of African Americans through the lived experience of the subjects themselves, with all of the nuances, ironies, contradictions, and complexities one might expect.
