Time Turner

why couldn’t harry save his parents with the time turner?
it makes sense.. harry could travel with ron or hermione and save his parents or even sirius or dumbledore from being killed…so why doesnt he?
Two words: grandfather paradox.
This is a variation on the classic question of “What if you went back in time and killed your grandfather before he met your grandmother?”
Suppose Harry goes back in time and rescues his parents. They raise him and he has a fairly normal wizarding childhood (well – he would’ve been famous as The Boy Who Lived, but that’s not the point). When he grows up and reaches the age when he was supposed to go back in time to save his parents, he has no reason to do that, because his parents are still alive. But if he doesn’t go back in time and save them, Voldy will kill them. So they can’t be alive when he’s a teenager. But if they’re dead, he’ll go back in time and save them, so they’ll be alive, but…
This assumes that within the Potter-verse, there is only one timeline, in which paradoxes are impossible.
Looking at it another way… if a Time Turner could be used this way, don’t you think Voldy would’ve tried it – say, killing Harry while he was still a child at the Dursleys, or warning his past self not to try to kill infant Harry?

Turner $5 JMW Turner was a prolific master born to a barber in Covent Garden, London, in 1775. When he died in 1851, he left over 19,000 artworks. Selecting which to include in this book was a major feat in itself. Turner was a Romantic when it came to landscapes, with an inimitable flair for seascapes, and was a pioneer of new techniques for creating tone and hue, deeply impressed by Goethe’s theory of colours. It took the great art critic John Ruskin to interpret his works in full. Turner was also a successful art gallery owner, professor of the Royal Academy and tireless traveller, who invariably returned home to England laden with outstanding artworks from abroad, especially Venice. With a keen eye for dramatic angle, he also documented on canvas the Battle of Waterloo, the fire that devoured Parliament and other major historical events of his time. Today, his works figure in the collections of the most famous museums in London, Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC. |

Turner and Hooch $5.01 Rated: PGSynopsis: One by-product of two consecutive Oscar wins is that Tom Hanks no longer has to appear in such potboilers as Turner and Hooch. Hanks plays Turner, a meticulously groomed, excruciatingly well-organized detective working in a small California coastal town. When local “character” John McIntyre is murdered by drug smugglers, the only witness is McIntyre’s slobbery, smelly mutt Hootch. You’re way ahead of us, folks: Turner, who despises dogs in general and Hooch in particular, is compelled to put the cantankerous dog up as his house guest. Also easily predictable is the fact that Turner and Hooch will, by the next-to-last reel, become boon companions. To its credit, the film has an abundance of laughs and thrills…but, gee, that ending! Neither terrific nor terrible, Turner and Hooch is a pleasant time-filler; we do wish, however, that more time had been spent on the budding romance between Turner and veterinarian Emily Carson (Mare Winningham). Martin Turner $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Martin Turner (born 1 October 1947, Torquay, Devon) was the bass guitarist, lead vocalist and a founder member of the rock band, Wishbone Ash. Known for their twin lead guitars, melodic songwriting and complex instrumental style, Turner was with Wishbone Ash from its inception in 1969 until 1980, during which time he was a key songwriter and creative force within the band. He played on their classic album Argus to which he also contributed vocals as well the bulk of the albums lyrics. Turners melodic basslines, where the instrument was often used as a third lead guitar, were an important part of the Wishbone Ash sound during the 1970s. In 1980, a decision by the rest of Wishbone Ash to introduce a frontman led to Turner parting company with Wishbone Ash. The frontman never appeared and Turner was replaced by John Wetton, who was formerly with King Crimson, Family and Roxy Music. Turner went on to a career in studio management and record production and also formed his own band The Wolfgang (also known as Bamboo and Martin Turners Stolen Face). J.M.W. Turner $15.99 In this second volume in the Ackroyd’s Brief Lives series, bestselling author Peter Ackroyd brings us a man of humble beginnings, crude manners, and prodigious talents, the nineteenth-century painter J. M. W. Turner. Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London in 1775. His father was a barber, and his mother came from a family of London butchers. “His speech was recognizably that of a Cockney, and his language was the language of the streets.” As his finest paintings show, his language was also the language of light. Turner’s landscapes—extraordinary studies in light, colour, and texture—caused an uproar during his lifetime and earned him a place as one of the greatest artists in history. Displaying his artistic abilities as a young child, Turner entered the Royal Academy of Arts when he was just fourteen years old. A year later his paintings appeared in an important public exhibition, and he rapidly achieved prominence, becoming a Royal Academician in 1802 and Professor of Perspective at the Academy from 1807–1837. His private life, however, was less orderly. Never married, he spent much time living in taverns, where he was well known for his truculence and his stinginess with money. Peter Ackroyd deftly follows Turner’s first loves of architecture, engraving, and watercolours, and the country houses, cathedrals, and landscapes of England. While his passion for Italy led him to oil painting, Turner’s love for London remained central to his heart and soul, and it was within sight of his beloved Thames that he died in 1851. His dying words were: “The sun is God.” Also available in ACKROYD’S BRIEF LIVES Chaucer |

The Confessions of Nat Turner $8.99 Few modern American novelists have dared as much as William Styron in writing The Confessions of Nat Turner. A white man and a Tidewater Virginian by birth, Styron put himself inside the life and mind of Nat Turner, the black man who led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831. It is a true story told as a novel, though the author prefers to call it ‘a meditation on history’ rather than a historical novel. Many black critics scorned it when it was published, refusing to accept Styrons bold conceit, though the novel won the 1967 Pulitzer Prize in fiction and was one of the most acclaimed American novels of its time. |

William Turner Visions Of Color And Light $12.52 Rated: NASynopsis: William Turner is one of the most important English painters of the Romantic Movement. He was unique in placing great significance on the atmospheric content of his portrayals. In his later works his subjects virtually dissolve into spaces defined by color. No one before Turner had placed such an intrinsic value on light and color, thus anticipating an aspect of modern painting. The unique film documents the life and work of the artist in his various phases; from his humble origin in the narrow alleys of London, to the triumphs of an artist who succeeded in becoming a professor of the Royal Academy. This informative and entertaining program also showcases Turner’s many journeys: he was travelling almost incessantly his entire life. Of great importance for his artistic development was the then obligatory tour of Italy. Who was this painter, whose later pictures developed an artistic freedom which increasingly liberated itself from the prevailing style? This program seeks answers to this question at original sites in London, Venice and Rome and tries to portray the psychological suspense of an art which, in its radicalism, was far ahead of its time. |

Florence Turner by Nicolao, Hardmod Carlyle [Paperback] $89.22 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Florence Turner (January 6, 1885 August 28, 1946) was an American actress, who became known as the Vitagraph Girl in early silent movies. Born in New York City, she was pushed into appearing on the stage at age three by her ambitious mother. Turner became a regular performer in a variety of productions. In 1906, she joined the fledgling motion picture business, signing with the pioneering Vitagraph Studios. Turner made her debut in Cast Up by the Sea (1907). At the time, there were no stars, unless an already famous stage star made a movie. Performers were not even mentioned by name. Long, drawn out screen credits were not thought of. There was nothing but the name of the company and the picture. As the content of movies evolved from simple incidents, or situations, into definite stories, some of the heroes and heroines were conceded a vague identity, such as the Edison Girl, etc. Author: Nicolao, Hardmod Carlyle Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 120 Publication Date: 2011/08/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.02 x 5.98 x 0.28 inches |

Joe Turner (Footballer) by Benoit, Kn Tr [Paperback] $111.53 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Joseph Turner (March 1872 20 November 1950) was a professional footballer who played in the 1902 FA Cup final for Southampton. Southampton were a Southern League club at the time, and their feat was all the more remarkable in that they had already been losing finalists two years earlier. Turner missed the 1900 final and had also previously missed a crucial penalty when Southampton lost a semi final to Nottingham Forest in 1898. Turner was born in Burslem, Staffordshire and started his football career with Newcastle Swifts in 1893, before joining Dresden United the following year. In the spring of 1895, Charles Robson, the newly appointed secretary/manager of Southampton St. Marys, and Alfred McMinn, one of the club committee, visited the Potteries in search of new players to strengthen the team ready for their second season in the Southern League. McMinn was a native of Staffordshire and was most persuasive on his home turf. Stealing Time $11.99 In January 2000, America Online and Time Warner announced the largest merger in U.S. history, a deal that would create the biggest media company in the world. It was celebrated as the marriage of new media and old media, a potent combination of the nation’s No. 1 Internet company and the country’s leading entertainment giant, the owner of such internationally renowned brands as Warner Bros., HBO, CNN, and Time magazine. But only three years later, nearly all the top executives behind the merger had resigned, the company had lost tens of billions of dollars in market value, and the U.S. government had begun two investigations into its business dealings. How did the deal of the century become an epic disaster? Alec Klein has covered AOL Time Warner for The Washington Post since the merger. His reporting on the company led to investigations by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission. In Stealing Time, he takes readers behind the scenes to show how a clash of cultures set the stage for a spectacular corporate collapse. AOL’s Steve Case knew it was only a matter of time before the Internet bubble of the late 1990s would burst, grounding his high-flying company. His solution: Buy another company to keep his own aloft. Meanwhile, Time Warner’s Jerry Levin was enamored of new technology but frustrated by his inability to push his far-flung media empire into the Internet age. AOL and Time Warner seemed like a perfect match. But the government forced the two companies to make concessions, and during the yearlong negotiations technology stocks tumbled. AOL executives lorded it over their Time Warner counterparts, who felt they were being acquired by brash, young interlopers with inflated dollars. The AOL way was fast, loose, and aggressive, and Time Warner executives — schooled in more genteel business practices — rebelled. In the midst of clashing cultures and conflicting management styles, AOL’s business slowed and then stalled. Worse yet, AOL came under government scrutiny, and when the company conducted its own internal investigation, it admitted that it had improperly booked at least $190 million in revenue. The Time Warner rebellion gathered momentum. This is a riveting story of ambition, hubris, and greed set amid the boom-and-bust years of the technology bubble. It is filled with outsized personalities — Steve Case, Jerry Levin, Bob Pittman, Ted Turner, and many more. Based on hundreds of confidential company documents and interviews with key players in this unfolding drama, Stealing Time is a fascinating tale of the swift rise and even swifter fall of AOL Time Warner. |

Magic Time $9.99 A prize-winning Southern master storyteller weaves a riveting tale of love, mystery and justice When the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Doug Marlette last turned to fiction, Valerie Sayers rejoiced in The Washington Post Book World : ” The Bridge [is] a great story–exuberant, proud, myth-challenging–and Marlette has a great, Dickensian time with the telling.” Pat Conroy saluted The Bridge as the finest first novel to come out of North Carolina since Look Homeward, Angel . Studs Turkel called it “enthralling.” Kaye Gibbons marveled at its “extraordinary grace [and] humor.” And the Southeast Booksellers Association gave The Bridge the 2002 Book Award for Fiction. Marlette’s new novel, Magic Time , is a spellbinding stew of history, murder, courtroom drama, humor, love, betrayal, and justice. Moving between New York City and the New South of the early 1990s, with flashbacks to Mississippi’s cataclysmic Freedom Summer of 1964, Magic Time tells the story of New York newspaper columnist Carter Ransom, a son of Mississippi, who had the great fortune and terrible luck of falling in love that summer of ’64 with a New York-born civil rights worker who wound up being killed alongside three coworkers. Carter’s father, the local judge, presided over the first trial of the murders. But now there’s evidence that the original trial was flawed, even fraudulent. And the question, among many others, is whether the good judge was knowingly involved in a cover-up. Magic Time is that rare thing: a page-turner whose driving plot line is matched by the depth of its moral vision. |

Time’s River $39.96 This volume stands as a key general resource for archaeologists working in the region extending from Louisiana through Mississippi north to Missouri and Kentucky, and it represents an opportunity to influence for decades a large part of the archaeological work to take place in the Southeast.   The book responds to a need for a comprehensive archaeological overview of the Lower Mississippi Valley that forms a portion of an interstate corridor spanning nine states that will run from southern Michigan to the Texas-Mexico border. The culturally sensitive Mississippi Delta is one of the richest archaeological areas in North America, and it is crucial that research designs be comprehensive, coordinated, and meet current preservation and future research needs. The authors are well-respected researchers from both within and outside the region with expertise in the full range of topics that comprise American archaeology. They examine matters of method and theory, the application of materials science, geophysics, and other high-tech tools in archaeology that provide for optimum data-recovery. Turner’s Paintbox $9.69 When art dealer Gerard Moyne falls in love with the elusive Julia, their attraction is as mysterious as the workings of art, their affair too perfect to last. Gerard has a passion for the genius of J.M.W. Turner – the painter of light – whose story shadows his and Julia’s. For Gerard, whose own perspective is beguiling if sometimes callous, Turner is the ultimate aesthete, the supreme technician, the most devoted of artists. Gerard delights in explaining him to Julia. But rather than dutifully learning her lessons, Julia sees something else in the painter. She, without knowing much about art, knows something about life. Lyrically stylish, Turner’s Paintbox is a tale of beauty and cruelty, one that ponders whether we can love another and yet stay true to ourselves. |

In My Time $16.99 In this eagerly anticipated memoir, former Vice President Dick Cheney delivers an unyielding portrait of American politics over nearly forty years and shares personal reflections on his role as one of the most steadfast and influential statesmen in the history of our country. The public perception of Dick Cheney has long been something of a contradiction. He has been viewed as one of the most powerful vice presidents—secretive, even mysterious, and at the same time opinionated and unflinchingly outspoken. He has been both praised and attacked by his peers, the press, and the public. Through it all, courting only the ideals that define him, he has remained true to himself, his principles, his family, and his country. Now in an enlightening and provocative memoir, a stately page-turner with flashes of surprising humor and remarkable candor, Dick Cheney takes readers through his experiences as family man, policymaker, businessman, and politician during years that shaped our collective history. Born into a family of New Deal Democrats in Lincoln, Nebraska, Cheney was the son of a father at war and a high-spirited and resilient mother. He came of age in Casper, Wyoming, playing baseball and football and, as senior class president, courting homecoming queen Lynne Vincent, whom he later married. This all-American story took an abrupt turn when he flunked out of Yale University, signed on to build power line in the West, and started living as hard as he worked. Cheney tells the story of how he got himself back on track and began an extraordinary ascent to the heights of American public life, where he would remain for nearly four decades: * He was the youngest White House Chief of Staff, working for President Gerald Ford—the first of four chief executives he would come to know well. * He became Congressman from Wyoming and was soon a member of the congressional leadership working closely with President Ronald Reagan. * He became secretary of defense in the George H. W. Bush administration, overseeing America’s military during Operation Desert Storm and in the historic transition at the end of the Cold War. * He was CEO of Halliburton, a Fortune 500 company with projects and personnel around the globe. * He became the first vice president of the United States to serve out his term of office in the twenty-first century. Working with George W. Bush from the beginning of the global war on terror, he was—and remains—an outspoken defender of taking every step necessary to defend the nation. Eyewitness to history at the highest levels, Cheney brings to life scenes from past and present. He describes driving through the White House gates on August 9, 1974, just hours after Richard Nixon resigned, to begin work on the Ford transition; and he portrays a time of national crisis a quarter century later when, on September 11, 2001, he was in the White House bunker and conveyed orders to shoot down a hijacked airliner if it would |

The Turner Report by Turner, Randy [Paperback] $27.83 Each day, Missouri reporters and politicians, and many in our nations capital, read The Turner Report to get their first glimpse at stories that later appear in the traditional media. In his first nonfiction book, Randy Turner offers a collection of some of his favorite stories, old and new, including: A minor presidential candidate fakes his death, then mounts a political comeback. Small town police officers terrorize teens and minorities until a brutal beating in the city jail brings their deeds to light. In Missouris bestremembered gubernatorial primary race, the loser became one of the most powerful men in the country; the winner ended up in a federal penitentiary. An angry mob is ready to kill two men it believes were involved in the Oklahoma City bombing. The grieving parents of Nancy Cruzan go to the U. S. Supreme Court and back to prove their daughter has a right to die. The special interests backing Congressman Roy Blunt and his son, Missouri Governor Matt Blunt, are revealed. Randy Turner $95.59 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Randy J. Biscuit Turner (November 25, 1949 August 18, 2005) was an American punk singer and artist. He was born in Gladewater, Texas. He was the lead singer for the seminal hardcore punk band Big Boys, formed in Austin in the 1970s. Big Boys, along with The Dicks and MDC, are credited with the development of hardcore punk in Texas, while it was simultaneously emerging in other cities as well. They were one of the earliest skate punk groups, were featured in Thrasher skateboarding magazine and videos, and had their own Big Boys skateboard. The group also is known for being the first punk band to introduce funk rhythms into hardcore, influencing later bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers. Turner was noted for outrageous stage antics, such as wearing a tutu while performing. In 2004, in a song called Ode, from the CD Complete Discography, the queercore band Limp Wrist pay homage to Randy Turner, along with Gary Floyd of The Dicks and Joshua Plague of Mukilteo Fairies and Behead the Prophet, No Lord Shall Live, for being pioneering gay punks in the hardcore scene who have paved the way for Limp Wrist. 1913: Come and See the Big Parade $19.98 This release on Archeophone Records is part of the Phonographic Yearbook series, with each edition featuring the biggest hit records of a particular yesteryear. 1913: Come and See the Big Parade contains 24 such songs and a booklet with various pictures, graphics, and extensive liner notes, making the whole package a sort of musical encyclopedia for that year. While the sound quality is less than stellar (not surprising given that it was 1913), the music still shines through. The songs and the artists are unfamiliar for the most part, but they quickly grow on you. There are the deep vocals and somber tone of Alan Turner on “Till the Sands of the Desert Grow Cold” (the popularity of which had much to do with America’s fascination for the Persian world at the time), the silliness of Ada Jones singing “…and he knew just how to row, he was a rowing Romeo” on “Row! Row! Row!,” the happy upbeat marching melody on the instrumental “Too Much Mustard” by Prince’s Band, and Al Jolson turning in an overly dramatic rendering of “You Made Me Love You.” Not to be missed is the forgotten Irving Berlin song “Snookey Oookums,” performed here by Billy Murray, with such classic lyrics as “For goodness sake!/Don’t keep us all awake!/With your snookey, ookey, ookey, baby talk!” 1913: Come and See the Big Parade covers an array of styles from sentimental and silly to ethnic (such as the Irish songs by Chauncey Olcott and Charles Harrison) and timely. ~ Simon Cantlon, Rovi |

A Hard Day’s Write $167.31 With The Initial Publication of A Hard Day’s Write, music journalist Steve Turner added a new dimension to the Fab Four’s rich legacy by exploring for the first time the personal true stories immortalized in their compositions. In this updated edition, Turner adds 22 more songs, including the gold singles Free as a Bird and Real Love , and 19 others from the world record-breaking album Anthology, as well as the track I’ll Be on My Way from Live at the BBC. Arranged chronologically by album, the result is a one-of-a-kind collectible that reveals the untold tales of the Beatles themselves. |

A Hard Day’s Write $25 A lavishly illustrated, rollicking account of the real people and events that inspired the Beatles’ lyrics. Who was just seventeen and made Paul’s heart go boom ? Was there really an Eleanor Rigby? Where’s Penny Lane? In A Hard Day’s Write, music journalist Steve Turner shatters many well-worn myths and adds a new dimension to the Fab Four’s rich legacy by investigating for the first time the ordinary people and events immortalized in the Beatles’ music and now occupying a special niche in popular culture’s collective imagination. Arranged chronologically by album, the book breaks new ground by exploring how private incidents influenced the group’s writing and how their music evolved. Turner reveals that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was really a drawing by Julian Lennon of his childhood friend; Bungalow Bill was an all-American tiger hunter; Doctor Robert was a New York ‘speech doctor’; and much more. A longtime Beatles admirer, Turner tracked down and interviewed the real-life subjects of the songs, probed public records and newspaper archives, and spoke in depth to the people closet to the Beatles to unearth tales that have never before been made public. The result is a book that chronicles an untold story of the Beatles themselves. Illustrated with over 200 photographs, A Hard Day’s Write is a visually alluring and highly entertaining journey to the land stretching just beneath your conscious mind, mapped out with strawberry fields, fool-topped hills, and long and winding roads. |

A Masterpiece Reconstructed $30.65 The Hours of Louis XII is the stunning prayer book that Jean Bourdichon painted for the king of France, mostly likely on the occasion of his coronation in 1498. Bourdichon was the court painter to four successive French kings, including Louis and his predecessor, Charles VIII. The manuscript was originally illuminated with twelve large calendar miniatures and two dozen full-page miniatures, but by the seventeenth century the Hours of Louis XII had been dismembered so that the large miniatures could be enjoyed separately as individual paintings. In recent years sixteen of these images have been located, including the portrait of the king that served as the book’s frontispiece. This catalogue, which accompanies an exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum, to be held October 18, 2005-January 8, 2006, publishes the paintings together for the first time, along with a selection of other books illuminated by the artist, by his teacher Jean Fouquet, and by their contemporaries. Janet Backhouse, who originally assembled the evidence attesting to the existence of this long-forgotten masterpiece, introduces the book and its cycle of miniatures. Thomas Kren considers the book’s provocative miniature of Bathsheba bathing within the context of the king’s own taste and predilections and within the emerging genre of the female nude in French painting. Nancy Turner examines the important evidence of the painter/illuminator Bourdichon’s technique in the Hours of Louis XII in relation to his other work and that of Jean Fouquet. Mark Evans examines the individual histories of each of the surviving portions of the manuscript to reconstruct their peregrinations and to weigh the evidence of the book’s place inthe history of collecting single illuminated leaves. Lastly, an appendix presents a reconstruction of the book’s devotional contents and program of illumination. |
