Why do I tip after my credit card has been swiped at a restaurant?

I was just wondering why I always tip after my card is swiped instead of before. It seems to only make sense that the restaurant waiter would get the final final total after tip once. Why and how do they swipe a card that is approved and add the tip after?

It’s etiquette. If you received bad service, you’d be more comfortable leaving an appropriate tip knowing you’re heading right out the door after you sign the check.

Otherwise, you’d have to wait for your server to show back up with the charge slip after he found out what you thought of him.

You might feel “bullied” into tipping more than you should, indirectly, if it was the other way around.

In the states, people are non-confrontational to an extent where this methodology makes sense.

When the card is swiped, a hold is put on your account for the bill amount. In some cases, the bill amount plus 20%; I’ve never really paid attention to the variables and delineations concerning that.

Afterward, the tip is entered in, and the bill is adjusted. Generally, all of the credit charges are batch processed at the end of the business day. That is when your hold becomes a charge.

“You should never tip with a credit card — use cash.
I’ve seen it happen that 1) the waitress doesn’t get the tip directly (either the cashier keeps it or it goes into a pool shared by all wait staff — if the waitress earns my tip, which they do, then they should get the full amount) ”

If there is a tip pool (fairly uncommon, unless the case of a certain circumstance where multiple servers are taking the responsibility of the same tables), it is something that the employee has obviously agreed to. If they receive cash, they will include that tip just the same as a charge.

If they don’t, they are cheating everyone else; likely including the bus boys/girls who hover about and certainly see everything.

Whhhhat? That’s completely illegal.

A credit card holder can wait months before
filing a complaint or chargeback. Therefore,
every business I know of hangs on to their signed
credit card receipts, dated and filed. If a customer
claims a discrepancy, the business has to pull out the receipt and prove that they didn’t make an error.

How is this cashier supposed to be pulling this maneuver off? What benefit is it for said cashier since it’s the server’s tip?

Yes, you’re correct. This DOES NOT happen, EVERY TIME or EVERYWHERE.
