Trick Clowning

Why do clown loaches play dead in the aquarium?

My clown loaches have this fun trick of finding creative ways of looking dead. One time I saw one belly up on the gravel. The other time it was laying on its side very still. Then the ultimate trick, one appeared very dead and attached it self to the filter that suctions the water out of the tank. Why do they play games like this lol .

I’ve had Clown Loach in one tank or other from the first tank I had back in 1972, they’ve always fascinated me with there antics, I ve watched them go to the top roll over and then drift to the bottom as if dead, I’ve watched endlessly as a group go in line and follow a fish around for several minutes, and I’ve sat and watched them come to the front of the glass to where the cat is sitting then rush off as it takes a swipe to come back to the exact spot over and over again tormenting the cat.
They’re amazing fish which are always bright and lively well worth keeping in groups.
I’ve also seen them tear a tank to pieces and kill members of the group for what seemed like no apparent reason.
No one has really done any study of them in there natural habitat but its thought they live in small groups only coming together for the breeding season during low water, maybe there aggressiveness during this period is offset in normal times by continual play.
