Review: The voices are stunning but the story’s the thing in ‘Walküre’
This production, second in San Francisco Opera’s complete ‘Ring’ cycle, is an extended close-up on Wotan — here, a tycoon in a mile-high office with a panoramic view of Manhattan. Like some greedy financier, he’s boxed in by his own deals, and from this flows his fall from power and the ruination of his most cherished relationships, with his children.

Trick Baby

Trick Baby

$4.99

This is the gritty truth, the life of a hustler in south side Chicago where the only characters are those who con and those who get conned. Trick Baby tells the story of “White Folks,” a blue-eyed, light-haired, con-artist whose pale skin allows him to pass in the streets as a white man. Folks is tormented early in life, rejected by other children and branded a “Trick Baby,” the child conceived between a hooker and her trick. Refusing to abandon his life in the ghetto and a chance at revenge, Folks is taken under the wing of an older mentor, Blue. What happens next is not to be believed. Only Slim could bring us the story of a hustler, forced to learn the game and rise to the top. It’s Slim’s story and he tells it in the only way he knows how, in the language of the streets.

A Trick Of The Light

A Trick Of The Light

$7.91

In the green depths of spring, morning breaks on a woman splayed in a bed of flowers – her eyes wide, her neck broken. Her death is a mystery; so is the woman herself. But as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his team peer into the dark corners of the victim’s past, they expose a secret that rots at the very heart of their community – a secret that will implicate someone they’ve trusted for years. And as Gamache knows too well, in the flickering shadows of death, the truth may be just a trick of the light.

Unitarian Trick

Unitarian Trick

$60.54

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In mathematics, the unitarian trick (occasionally unitariantrick sic]) is a device in the representation theory of Lie groups, introduced by Hermann Weyl. It applies to show that the representation theory of some group G is in a qualitative way controlled by that of some other compact group K. An important example is that in which G is the complex general linear group, and K the unitary group acting on vectors of the same size. From the fact that the representations of K are completely reducible, the same is concluded for those of G, at least in finite dimensions. The relationship between G and K that drives this connection is traditionally expressed in the terms that the Lie algebra of K is a real form of that of G. In the theory of algebraic groups, the relationship can also be put that K is a dense subset of G, for the Zariski topology. The trick works for reductive Lie groups (suitably defined), of which an important case are semisimple Lie groups. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. “Hearts are broken,” Lillian Dyson carefully underlined in a book. “Sweet relationships are dead.” But now Lillian herself is dead. Found among the bleeding hearts and lilacs of Clara Morrow’s garden in Three Pines, shattering the celebrations of Clara’s solo show at the famed Musee in Montreal. Chief Inspector Gamache, the head of homicide at the Surete du Quebec, is called to the tiny Quebec village and there he finds the art world gathered, and with it a world of shading and nuance, a world of shadow and light. Where nothing is as it seems. Behind every smile there lurks a sneer. Inside every sweet relationship there hides a broken heart. And even when facts are slowly exposed, it is no longer clear to Gamache and his team if what they’ve found is the truth, or simply a trick of the light.

David Ashton, like Robert Louis Stevenson or Ian Rankin, is inspired by the beauty-and-beast nature of Edinburgh. It is 1860 and a Confederate officer, Jonathen Sinclair, arrives in Edinburgh with a sheaf of money to purchase a blockade-runner from Clydeside shipbuilders. He is betrayed to the Union forces and is shot dead by their secret agents. Who are they and where is Sinclair’s money? Meanwhile, a beautiful young American spiritualist, Sophia Adler, is the toast of upper-class Edinburgh with her dramatic seances. Sebastian gets out alive, but a woman across town isn’t so lucky. Then another person is found killed in circumstances eerily similar to one of Sebastian’s acts. Shelley is certain there’s a link between the magician and the murders. Even more unsettling is the way Sebastian invades her mind and stirs her senses. Not to mention Jake’s negative reaction to the man. Can Shelley fight off Sebastian’s supernatural influence to determine if he’s the killer…or another victim? 69,000 words

 2Cellos

2Cellos

$12.99

Following in the footsteps of Justin Bieber and Soulja Boy, Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, aka 2Cellos, were discovered through YouTube, after six million people viewed their classical cover version of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.” Now with a major-label deal under their belt, the classically trained musicians face the tough prospect of translating what could be seen a one-trick pony novelty into a full-length album. It’s a task made even more difficult considering that, unlike violinist David Garrett’s forays into classical rock, which add layers of orchestral production on top of his virtuoso skills, the two 24-year-olds’ self-titled debut doesn’t feature any other instruments. Luckily, the pair’s masterful talents, which seem to produce sounds from a cello that otherwise wouldn’t seem possible, more than make up for the lack of background support. Indeed, other than the deliberately sparse reworkings of Johnny Cash’s rendition of “Hurt” and second Jackson interpretation “Human Nature,” its 12 tracks very rarely feel as stripped-back as one might expect, as the duo replicates the twanging guitar hook from Dick Dale’s Pulp Fiction theme “Misirlou,” the crunching riffs of Nirvana’s grunge classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and the lilting piano chords of Muse’s “The Resistance,” using a combination of plucking, bowing, and frantic strumming. While the bombastic treatments of “Smooth Criminal” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” have received all the attention, the whole concept is just as effective on the slower numbers, as they turn Sting’s flamenco-tinged “Fragile” into a mournful Gypsy folk ballad and transform U2′s “With Or Without You” into a poignant instrumental suitable for a soundtrack to a Jane Austen adaptation. The ambitious project only really falters on the one track, which on paper seems best suited to their craft, with their adaptation of “Viva la Vida” sounding surprisingly flat when compared …

 A Brief History of Love

A Brief History of Love

$14.98

On their debut album, A Brief History of Love, the Big Pink immerse themselves in all aspects of the first wave of shoegaze. The duo of Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell have doubtlessly made a complete study of the guitar music coming out of their native U.K. in the late ’80s and early ’90s and worked to build their sound into an impressive conglomeration of influences that’s made up of components like the proggy excess of the Catherine Wheel, the guitar overload of My Bloody Valentine, the drum loops and dance elements of Chapterhouse, the dark, industrial sheen of Curve, and the epic sweep of the Verve but with plenty of modern production tricks. The influence extends to the vocals, which recall the expansiveness of the Verve’s Richard Ashcroft rather than the dreaminess of the Thames Valley shoegaze contingent. Seeing (and hearing) all these comparisons may make it easy for some to instantly write the band off as record collectors or scene fetishists with no ideas of their own, but that would be a mistake. Yes, they are derivative. Yes, they are rehashing the past. This is key, though. They write really good songs and make them sound really good, too. That’s the neat trick that allows them to escape the retro-revivalist label and that’s why A Brief History of Love should appeal to both fans of shoegaze days gone by and the people who are still discovering the past and digging other groups who, like the Big Pink, are keeping shoegaze alive. The best songs on the album would do all right if stacked up against the work of their idols. Take “Dominos,” for example. The thundering drums combine with an instantly memorable hook, the kind that makes you want to sing along before the first chorus is half over, to make it soar. “At War with the Sun,” too, has a thrilling chorus and an uplifting feel, “Tonight” rollicks and rolls like a goofy cross between Jane’s Addiction at their most pop and Medicine at their frothiest, and “Love in Vain” is a heartbreaking balla…

 Anything Goes

Anything Goes

$18.98

The Roundabout Theatre Company’s 2011 Broadway revival of Anything Goes offers a fresh take on Cole Porter’s 1934 hit musical while keeping close to the freewheeling spirit of the original. The production was a huge success, winning Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, going to Sutton Foster as the singing evangelist Reno Sweeney. The album debuted at the top of Billboard’s Cast Album Chart and offers ample evidence that the enthusiasm the revival has generated is fully deserved. The spotlight is on Foster, who brings considerable glamour to a role created by Ethel Merman. She skillfully manages the trick of conveying the character’s essential sweetness and vulnerability while still channeling some of Merman’s humor and brassy confidence. She’s immensely appealing in songs like “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” and “Anything Goes,” and she cuts loose in “Blow, Gabriel, Blow.” The supporting cast is consistently strong, which is essential in an ensemble piece like this that’s packed with eccentric, high-profile characters. As Billy Crocker, the guy who finally gets his girl, Colin Donnell has an appealing charm, and he and Laura Osnes as Hope Harcourt generate some heat in duets like “Easy to Love” (a song that had been cut from the original production), “It’s De-Lovely,” and “All Through the Night.” Osnes’ poignant solo, “Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye,” is one of the album’s highlights. Joel Grey shines in the crucial but relatively small role of Moonface Martin. This production, which uses a book updated by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman for a 1987 revival, beefs up the role and gives Grey the chance to sing “Friendship” (a song lifted from Porter’s show Dubarry Was a Lady) with Foster, as well as his standard solo, “Be Like the Bluebird.” (One of the special attractions of this album is the inclusion of several of Porter’s songs, including “The Crew Song,” “It’s…

 Berlin

Berlin

$11.98

Transformer and “Walk on the Wild Side” were both major hits in 1972, to the surprise of both Lou Reed and the music industry, and with Reed suddenly a hot commodity, he used his newly won clout to make the most ambitious album of his career, Berlin. Berlin was the musical equivalent of a drug-addled kid set loose in a candy store; the album’s songs, which form a loose story line about a doomed romance between two chemically fueled bohemians, were fleshed out with a huge, boomy production (Bob Ezrin at his most grandiose) and arrangements overloaded with guitars, keyboards, horns, strings, and any other kitchen sink that was handy (the session band included Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, Aynsley Dunbar, and Tony Levin). And while Reed had often been accused of focusing on the dark side of life, he and Ezrin approached Berlin as their opportunity to make The Most Depressing Album of All Time, and they hardly missed a trick. This all seemed a bit much for an artist who made such superb use of the two-guitars/bass/drums lineup with the Velvet Underground, especially since Reed doesn’t even play electric guitar on the album; the sheer size of Berlin ultimately overpowers both Reed and his material. But if Berlin is largely a failure of ambition, that sets it apart from the vast majority of Reed’s lesser works; Lou’s vocals are both precise and impassioned, and though a few of the songs are little more than sketches, the best — “How Do You Think It Feels,” “Oh, Jim,” “The Kids,” and “Sad Song” — are powerful, bitter stuff. It’s hard not to be impressed by Berlin, given the sheer scope of the project, but while it earns an A for effort, the actual execution merits more of a B-. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Forevermore

$70.99

Three years ago, Whitesnake released Good to Be Bad, a comeback album that reached the U.K.? s Top Five. It walked the line between their own brand of U.K. hard rock and ? 80s glam metal. On Forevermore, frontman David Coverdale polishes the production — a tad — focuses the guitars more, and successfully fuses Whitesnake’s various eras, and succeeds in spades. There is a new rhythm section with drummer Brian Tichy and bassist Michael Devlin. Forevermore commences with ? Steal Your Heart Away,? an old-school, nasty slide guitar workout with a harmonica solo, that revs into a full-blown blues-rocker with a killer chorus. Guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach shine on the instrumental bridge. The album’s first single, “Love Will Set You Free,” is top-notch Whitesnake that nods back to the early years while grounding itself in the present. “All Out of Luck” and “Tell Me How” measure up in the same way. “I Need You (Shine a Light)” is an enormous surprise; its hook is so infectious it sounds like Coverdale’s been listening to Cheap Trick’s earliest records. The acoustic midtempo ballad “One of These Days” carries a trace of country in its melody, hearkening back to the Restless Heart era. Coverdale reveals he’s more than competent to write a fine, lyrically savvy love song, when he? s not thinking with his dick. “Fare Thee Well,” another acoustic number, showcases Coverdale at his most intimate. “Whipping Boy Blues? is a dirty slide rocker that reconciles both sides of the band. “My Evil Ways,” with its calamitous drum intro, is punishing; Coverdale pulls out all the stops to deliver his finest vocal performance on the set. The album’s true highlight, however, is in the closing title track. Over seven minutes, it begins as an acoustic number before morphing into a stellar Whitesnake power ballad. After a two-and-a-half minute acoustic guitar/vocal intro, the band enters with a “Kashmir”-like chord sequence; they keep it slow but increase t…

 Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden

$14.99

There may be no better place to hear how both punk and prog rock informed the New Wave of British Heavy Metal than Iron Maiden’s self-titled debut. Often overlooked and overshadowed by the glorious Bruce Dickinson years, it’s easy to forget that Iron Maiden was itself a game-changer when it appeared on the scene in 1980. That year also saw important albums from Mot? rhead, Saxon, and Angel Witch, but Iron Maiden vaulted its creators to the head of the NWOBHM pack, reaching the U.K. Top Five and establishing them as an outfit with the talent to build on Judas Priest’s late-’70s innovations. On the one hand, Maiden was clearly drawing from elements of punk rock — the raw D.I.Y. production, the revved-up velocities, and the vocals of rough-and-ready growler Paul Di’Anno, who looked and sounded not like a metal god, but rather a short-haired street tough. On the other hand, Maiden had all the creative ambition of a prog rock band. Compositionally, even their shortest and most straightforward songs featured abrupt changes in tempo and feel. Their musicianship was already light years beyond punk, with complicated instrumental passages between guitarists Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton and bassist Steve Harris. When Murray and Stratton harmonize their leads, they outdo even Priest’s legendary tandem in terms of pure speed. The lyrics have similarly high-flying aspirations, spinning first-person stories and character sketches with a flair for the seedy and the grotesque. Add it all up, and Iron Maiden performs the neat trick of reconciling two genres seemingly antithetical to one another, using post-Priest heavy metal as the meeting ground. The seven-minute “Phantom of the Opera” is a landmark, the band’s earliest progressive epic and still among its best; with its ambitious fusion of musical styles, its multi-sectioned construction, and the literary retelling of the lyrics, it seemed to encapsulate all the promise of both the band and the NWOBHM. Two of the simpler, …

 Manners

Manners

$21.98

Passion Pit’s mode of operation on their debut album, Manners, appears to be to juxtapose the giddiest music possible with some truly dark and self-searching lyrics. It’s a classic trick that will have you singing along happily to the sound of confusion, sadness, and the torment of one man’s mind. You can dig below the sweet falsetto of vocalist/songwriter Michael Angelakos, the rollicking and joyful tunes, and the glittering, shiny surfaces that the group and producer Chris Zane painstakingly create and absorb the insights and feelings of Angelakos’ words or not, because the record is satisfying either way — especially if a record that combines Animal Collective’s twee-est moments, Mercury Rev’s most cotton-candied jams, the paisley-fied soul of Prince, and the synth pop hookiness of New Order sounds like a good idea to you. As if that weren’t enough, they also bring ’80s funk influences on the super catchy “Little Secrets” and a slick and pleasing ’80s pop sound on a track like “To Kingdom Come” (which would have sounded perfect wedged between Peter Gabriel and INXS on a modern rock radio playlist back in 1986), and made sure to include the song from the previous EP that made people take notice of the band in the first place, the otherworldly “Sleepyhead.” Add lots of glitch-pop sound manipulation for a modern sheen, live drums for a human heartbeat under all the Technicolor wall of sound, and a children’s choir on a couple songs for extra innocence, and you have a record that could have been a total clustercrash of influences and sounds that ended up sounding hollow and pointless. Instead, thanks to the meticulous production values, the insane catchiness of the hooks, and the pure and true emotional underpinnings below all the gloss, the album is a total success of both sound and vision. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi

Namedropper is the hilarious, razor-sharp tale of a star-struck teen who takes her style from Hollywood’s leading ladies and turns her everyday life into a blockbuster production. Utterly endearing and very funny .– Elle . From the Publisher Viva Cohen, sixteen-going-on-thirty, lives in a house adorned with movie posters and photographs of legends of the silver screen. Raised by an uncle who remains a loyal admirer of Elizabeth Taylor’s, Viva has picked up a trick or two from these movie mavens: she can bat her eyelashes like the stars of old; she dresses in elaborate fifties-style underwear; and she thinks that love, like a movie trailer, should last only long enough to give you the highlights. Living out the film version of her life, Viva and her sexy, if dysfunctional, best friend Treena take a wild ride to Los Angeles, where they join Ray, an aging rock star, on tour. When she falls in love with Ray’s opening act only to have him mysteriously disappear, Viva goes into high gear. Running as fast as her stilettos will carry her, she journeys through the movie and music worlds, merrily dropping names along the way. Like High Fidelity, Nick Hornby’s bestselling book about boys and music, Namedropper is a knowing, hip, and smart romp through the obsessions and dreams of adolescence. Publishers Weekly Viva Cohen, a self-proclaimed insecure teenage Jew, is the starstruck heroine of Forrest’s zippy, pop-conscious debut. When Viva’s mother decides to live a life of New Age ashram hopping, Viva is raised by Manny, her gay uncle in a North London flat coated with posters of Elizabeth Taylor. With Manny as her father figure, Liz as her matriarch, and her two best friends, Ray, a 33-year-old rock star, and Treena, a feckless bombshell, Viva, at 17, knits up her life with celluloid threads. She dresses up as Elizabeth Taylor in Suddenly, Last Summer, and she’s both lighthearted and cynical about love. The novel is a lo

The Doctor Who Error Finder: Plot, Continuity and Production Mistakes in the Television Series and Films

$47.89

In its long television run, the low-budget but beloved science fiction serial Dr. Who featured numerous bloopers that producers could not afford to reshoot. Today, spotting and discussing those bloopers has become a favorite pastime for fans seeking answers to penetrating questions: When was the First Doctor on a ?slight exploitation?? What does the Second Doctor call the sectional supply unit? When does the Third Doctor mistake a silicate rod for a silicon rod? What is hanging from the Fourth Doctor’s nose when is in a cell on Traken? How does the Fifth Doctor accomplish his disappearing hat trick? Where does the Sixth Doctor believe Peri’s heart and liver are located? What does the Seventh Doctor do when Ray asks what he is doing? Why does the Eighth Doctor not know the difference between Twelve and Thirteen? This work is the largest existing collection of errors appearing in Doctor Who, from every episode of the original television series, the movies, and the spin-offs. Presenting over 4000 errors and about 1500 other items of interest to fans, it includes transmitted bloopers such as microphones or equipment visible in a shot, obvious strings, anachronisms, unsteady sets, and actors having trouble walking. This book not only presents previously unrecorded bloopers, but also corrects errors in others lists and even refutes well-established blooper claims. The work guides the reader through the stories of each Doctor (first to eighth). Information on each story begins with the official BBC code and title, alternate titles, writers and directors, media examined in creating this list, running times, highlights, questions to keep in mind, and then information on the individual episodes. For each episode, the work provides information on the date of first transmission and a list of errors and trivia, each with its approximate time within the episode. The game’s all-important track list encompasses all forms of rock and metal music including classic rock, “hair metal”, heavy metal, modern rock and alternative rock. In total, Guitar Hero II features more than 55 songs. A number of thrillers made in the 1920s and 1930s have become available again thanks to new technology. There are a few, however, that remain elusive to most, if not all, movie buffs. This book covers 21 thrillers from those decades that are well-regarded and eagerly sought, but difficult to find–The Mystery of Dr. Fu Manchu (1923), The Unknown Purple (1923), The Sorrows of Satan (1926), While London Sleeps (1926), The Monkey Talks (1927), The Chinese Parrot (1927), Stark Mad (1929), The Unholy Night (1929), High Treason (1929), The Spider (1931), Eran Trece (1931), The Monkey”s Paw (1933), Trick for Trick (1933), Deluge (1933), The Vanishing Shadow (1934), The Witching Hour (1934), Double Door (1934), Black Moon (1934), Le Golem (1936), The Scarab Murder Case (1937), and Sh! The Octopus (1937). For each film, the author provides such details as the production company, running time, release date(s), cast and production credits, a synopsis, and commentary.

DJ Khaled comes from the DJ Clue school of disc-jockeying. He isn’t known for his production skills and is far from a master turntablist. What he does have, though, is connects–mad connects. And as his second full-length release, WE THE BEST, shows, DJ Khaled’s connections extend far beyond Miami city limits, as Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Jadakiss, Beanie Siegel, Juelz Santana, and Young Jeezy are just the tip of the iceberg. With production from Cool & Dre, Beat Novocaine, and the Runners, among others, WE THE BEST bangs with 12 tracks of neck-snapping, Dirty South slop. Fellow Miami representatives Rick Ross and Trick Daddy are also prominently featured.

 Yorkville NX750P 750-watt Active Speaker

Yorkville NX750P 750-watt Active Speaker

$1079

NX750P – Active Speaker – 750w, 15 inch / 1.5 inch The NX750P represents the culmination of all Yorkville’s research and development in molded technology to this point. The injection molded, internally multi-fin-braced enclosure supports a high-performance 15" neodymium-magnet woofer and an 80 degree x 50 degree rotatable custom ABS waveguide horn, all protected by a perforated metal grill. A rugged carrying handle, speaker stand socket and reinforced threaded flypoints are also built in. A new biamplification module delivers 750 Watts to the woofer and 100 Watts to the horn driver. The horn amplifier section uses a two-tier class H linear technology, allowing the horn to produce loud clean transients to match the high output of the woofer. Its two-tier design technology is lower in weight and more efficient than conventional amplifiers while providing higher headroom and lower operating temperature – a perfect solution for powering the top end. A newly designed 750-Watt switching amplifier drives the woofer in the NX750P. The amplifier uses Class D switching technology, in part to reduce overall weight – it also runs cooler. Class D technology is similar to the power supply found in the trend-setting Elite EF500P’s amplifier. Of particular significance is this technology’s inherently low heat production which ensures reliability in a wide range of environments. Then the NX750P’s combination of neodymium woofer magnetics and lightweight composite enclosure materials further ensure that all this remarkable performance comes in a lightweight, durable package. Added to this is a great degree of versatility. For example the NX750P can easily be used in any orientation – vertical or horizontal (eg stand-mounted or as a floor monitor) – close to walls in installations (flypoints are built-in) or in arrays with multiple NX750Ps. There is also a versatile direct input system and built-in mixer. The mixer allows the NX750P to be used directly with a microphone and/or a line source. A "loop" output allows multiple NX750Ps to be interconnected with mic or patch cables and controlled by one cabinet’s mixer stage or direct line input. Here’s another versatile trick – you can combine NX750P’s using the mixer inputs on each cabinet and coupling the loop outputs to provide a complete, easy-to-use PA with its own microphone inputs and line inputs for background music or other audio. It’s ideal for duos in small clubs, also presentations or teaching applications. Many NX750P’s can be linked together but a maximum of three "mixers" can be active at any one time making three mic sources and six line sources available in any three-or-more-cabinet arrays. The trim control allows looped cabinets to be individually adjusted in level. Finally, the microphone input has bass and treble equalization and a 100Hz selectable high-pass filter appropriate for vocal-only applications or to let you add NX or Elite powered subwoofers, without a crossover.. Acoustic performance is ultimately the most important factor in any loudspeaker. The NX750P offers 127dB of maximum sound pressure potential and a wide, smooth audio range to ensure fidelity throughout the audience area.Yorkville NX750P Active Speaker Features: Ultra-light injection molded Polypropylene construction Dual purpose full range and wedge monitor format enclosure Ultra-clear reproduction throughout bandwidth Lightweight, high efficiency, high tech, 750 Watt Bi-amped power module Proven TX style processing and component protection +6dB/-infinity input trim control for individual cabinet level adjustment XLR and TRS inputs / outputs for easy connection and looping Multi-input source mixer for direct inputs Direct microphone input with level control Two-way overall EQ controls Light-weight 15" Neodymium Woofer High quality 1.5" High Frequency driver Next generation woofer / driver / horn technology Integrated flying hardware (3/8" threaded hole
