Can anyone tell me the value of my vintage magazines?

I currently found some old magazines at the antique store in town and thought they were cool. After looking on the web and doing some research have found some prices but they have a very wide range. If anyone could tell me an acurate price on one of the following magazines, please answer.

September 19, 1936 Radio Guide

October 14, 1933 Collier’s The National Weekly

July 1948 McCall’s

November 18, 1966 Life (Robert Kennedy will Run)

This last one was said to be worth at least $60, is that true. If anyone can help please do.

I have some vintage mags also and I am currently researching the values of them.
So far I found this website: http://www.dtmagazine.com/ which has a detailed price list of the magazines I am researching. I’m not sure if it’s legitimate or not but you may want to check there. Also you can contact Antique Road Show appraisers. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/roadshow/series/appraisers/index.html
Have you tried searching Ebay to see if your specific item is for sale there.

Good luck,

Jeff S

Trollope and the Magazines examines the serial publication of several of Trollope’s novels in the context of the gendered discourses in a range of Victorian magazines – including Cornhill, Good Words, Saint Pauls , and the Fortnightly Review . It highlights the importance of the periodical press in the literary culture of Victorian Britain, and argues that readers today need to engage with the lively cultural debates in the magazines, in order better to appreciate the complexity of Trollope’s popular fiction.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Victorian Magazines were perhaps the greatest vehicles of topical dissemination throughout Britain and America in the midlate 19th century and early 20th century; and are credited for liberalizing society and advancing globalization. Some of the more popular magazines (based on their sells) were Scribners Magazine, Harpers Monthly, Leslies Magazine, McClures, Century and Puck Magazine. Although the Victorian era spanned from 18371901 (Queen Victorias birth and death), most magazines derived from the period circulated beyond the Victorian and Edwardian period, and for reasons of flow, all magazines from 18501930 are included. There have been large magazines with tiny circulations and there have been diminutive sheets which have reached thousands of readers. But all ‘little magazines’ have been small in one or another of these ways, and usually in both… And yet most of them have had arrestingly large-scale ambitions…’   From Ian Hamilton (1938-2001), himself the founder of the Review and New Review, comes this matchless survey (first published in 1976) of the literary magazine from 1912-1950: concentrating on those periodicals that enjoyed dominant editorial personalities (the likes of Pound, Eliot, Cyril Connolly) and which, ultimately, proved central to their cultural epoch.     ‘Our one consolation for Ian Hamilton’s early death is that his work seems to have lived on with undiminished force. He helped to shape our generation and at this rate may well do the same for the next as well.’ Clive James

Consumer Magazines of the British Isles

Consumer Magazines of the British Isles

$201.16

Consumer magazines have a long history in the United Kingdom and Ireland beginning in the seventeenth century, and a number of them that date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are still flourishing. This reference volume offers a representative sample of the current British magazine market, providing detailed profiles of fifty magazines, written mainly by scholars from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, and supplementary data on many others. The separately profiled magazines range from the venerable The Scots Magazine (1739), Spectator (1828), Punch (1841), and The Illustrated London News (1842) to relative newcomers of the 1980s such as Country Living (1985), Prima (1986), Q (1986), and House Beautiful (1989). Included are major circulation leaders like Radio Times, Smash Hits, and Womans Own, prestigious and influential journals like The Economist and New Scientist, regional magazines like Cumbria and The Dalesman, general interest magazines, and a wide variety of magazines in targeted subject or readership categories, like cars, homes, nature, and sports. Each essay consists of a narrative history from the magazines founding to the present, concluding with information sources and data on periodicity, publishers, locations of the magazines in the United States, editors, title changes, and circulation. Appendixes list the fifty magazines by date of founding and in subject categories; succinct data on 330 additional British consumer magazines appears in a directory. The volume opens with a concise history of British periodicals. Intended specifically for reference use on British journals, this volume will also be useful for research in journalism history and Britishcultural history. Author: Riley, Sam G./ Riley, Sam G. Regional Interest Magazines of the United States

Regional Interest Magazines of the United States

$146.95

In Regional Interest Magazines of the United States, Sam G. Riley and Gary W. Selnow focus on those magazines that direct their attention to a particular city or region and reach a fairly general readership intersted in entertainment and information. This work is a follow-up to their earlier Index to City and Regional Magazines of the United States. Titles are arranged alphabetically to facilitate access; each entry includes a historical essay on the magazine's founding, development, editorial policies, and content. Entries also include two sections that provide data on information sources and publication history, arranged in tabular form for ready reference. In choosing the magazines to be profiled, Riley and Selnow attempted to represent not only the biggest and most successful of this genre, but also some smaller and newer titles, plus significant earlier magazines that are no longer in print. Special care was also taken to achieve an even geographical spread. To attain greater accuracy, regional writers were enlisted to do the entries on their own region. These writers provide valuable information on how the various magazines began, how conditions have caused them to change, their problems, their editors and publishers, and their content as well as colorful and little known facts of their operation. Magazines were arranged alphabetically, and two informative appendices list the profiled titles by founding date and geographic location. This volume will be a valuable resource for students of magazine publishing history.

Distribution Planning of Magazines

Distribution Planning of Magazines

$95.59

The aim of this work is to determine the best values of total printing volume of magazines and the amounts that are sent to sales points, through forecasting and determination of optimum service level to be provided. The first part of the book deals with forecasting the sales endpoint demands for the future issue. Especially, the handling of the censored demand in case of sellout is analyzed. Also, studies are carried out for nding the optimum parameters of the forecasting method. The two main strategies used for planning are mentioned: topdown and bottomup. The topdown approach rst determines the printing volume and distributes it to the endpoints. In the second part, three alternative ways of applying the topdown approach are discussed. The third part presents the existing bottomup optimization approach that is valid under the assumption of normal probability demand distribution. It then deduces formulas for finding return and lost sales that would occur. Then, a simulation based approach is described that nds these performance measures, under any demand distribution assumption. In the end, a computer based illustration of these methods is given. Modernism, Magazines, and the British avant-garde

Modernism, Magazines, and the British avant-garde

$99

This book is a re-examination of the fertile years of early modernism immediately preceding the First World War. During this period, how, where, and under whose terms the avant-garde in Britain would be constructed and consumed were very much to play for. It is the first study to look in detail at two little magazines marginalised from many accounts of this competitive process: Rhythm and the Blue Review. By thoroughly examining not only the content but theinterrelated networks that defined and surrounded these publications, Faith Binckes aims to provide a fresh and challenging perspective to the on-going reappraisal of modernism.Founded in 1911, and edited by John Middleton Murry with assistance from Michael Sadleir and subsequently from Katherine Mansfield, these magazines featured a series of pivotal moments. Rhythm was the arena for a challenge to Roger Fry's vision of Post-Impressionism, for the introduction of Picasso to a British audience, for early short stories and reviews by Lawrence, and for Mansfield's discovery of a voice in which to frame her breakthrough writing on New Zealand. A further contextfor many of these experiments was the extended and acrimonious debate Rhythm conducted with A.R. Orage's New Age, in which issues of the proper gender, generation, and formulation of modernity were debated month by month. However, reading magazines as vehicles for avant-garde development can only provide half the story. The book also pays close attention to their dialogic, reproductive, and periodical nature, and explores the strategies at work within the terminology of the new. Crucially, it argues that they offer compelling material evidence for the consistently mobile and multiple boundaries of the modern, and puts forward a compelling case for focusing upon the specificity of magazines as a medium forliterary and artistic innovation.

Mothers and Work in Popular American Magazines

Mothers and Work in Popular American Magazines

$100.54

Drawing on articles appearing in popular womens magazines from 1950 to 1989, this study documents changes in justifications of genderbased divisions of labor in the home and workplace. The study details the types of rationalizations that have been used to reconcile one new familial arrangementtwoparent workers with traditional gender values that promote men as breadwinners/fathers and women as housewives/mothers. The study reveals that changes have taken place only within the context of being a good mother. A serious analysis of womens burden of being both breadwinner and homemaker, therefore, has not occurred. Womens magazines serve as moral guides for their readers, providing justifications for both working and nonworking readers. They rely heavily on experts to provide personal direction to their readers. This work is in the same vein as Susan Faludis Backlash, which examines the use of the media in the control of gender ideologies. This is vintage Vonnegut: short stories never-before collected or published in book form. They are from the era of the Golden Age of magazines: a pre-television time when publications such as The Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s, Argosy, and others reigned supreme as Americans’ entertainment choice. Before that Golden Age drew to a close half a century ago, a young PR man at General Electric sold his first short story to one of the publications. By the time he’d sold his third, Vonnegut quit GE to join the likes of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Faulkner to write short stories at fifteen-hundred dollars a piece.Vonnegut himself has selected the best of these early stories for this audio collection, and has written a new preface and afterword for the occasion. Now listeners can relive the genesis of the master. Stories such as Cruise of the Jolly Roger, The Powder Blue Dragon, Hal Irwin’s Magic Lamp, and Bagombo Snuff Box return us to the beginning of a literary voice that’s sure to endure forever Bagombo Snuff Box, the missing pieces of the master’s collection, is a ready-made classic for Vonnegut fans new and old.

History of Men’s Magazines

The definitive annotated and illustrated history of girlie periodicals (1958-1967) Volume III begins with an explosion of new American men’s magazines following the redefinition of US obscenity laws in the late fifties. We examine the enormous impact of Playboy, not only on American titles, but on magazines worldwide. This is the decade when France finally declines as a great force in magazine production; England starts to show her pervy side; Argentina embraces burlesque; and Germany once again blends political activism with nudity. By 1965 even Australia has a booming men’s magazine industry. The volume ends with a look at those great back-of-the-magazine ads for party pills and the first inflatable ?dates?. The History of Men’s Magazines, Volume III contains over 400 full color pages of vintage covers and interiors and a well-researched text profiling quirky publishers and artists, individual magazines, and the place of it all in the Swinging Sixties culture.

 Livable Modernism

Livable Modernism

$45

During the years of the Great Depression in America, modernist designers developed products and lifestyle concepts intended for middle-class–not elite–consumers. In this remarkable book, Kristina Wilson coins the term livable modernism to describe this school of design. Livable modernism combined International Style functional efficiency and sophistication with a respect for consumers’ desires for physical and psychological comfort. Wilson offers a new view of many popular designs for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms of the 1930s and investigates the remarkable marketing savvy of the furniture and decorative arts companies of the day. As the first study of the advertising and retailing of modern design during the Depression years, Livable Modernism also features an extensive array of vintage advertisements from such popular magazines as House Beautiful and Ladies’ Home Journal. Engagingly written and handsomely designed, Livable Modernism is an essential book for anyone interested in modern furniture and decorative arts. The author demonstrates that the work of these designers–including Russel Wright, Donald Deskey, and Gilbert Rohde–paved the way for Charles and Ray Eames and other post-World War II designers, and that the importance of their philosophies, innovations, and influence has until now been underappreciated.

 Pownal

Pownal

$21.99

In the 1700s, the fertile valley lands and wooded hills of Pownal attracted Dutch tenant farmers and English settlers. French Canadians soon arrived in the villages of Pownal to work in the mills, as both adults and children. Later painters and magazines captured the beauty of the land, while hill farmers struggled to make the thin soil produce. Following World War II, a United Nations magazine featured Pownal on its cover as a symbol of the peace so many sought. The photographs in Pownal illustrate the beauty, as well as hardships, associated with rural life. Vintage images of barefooted school students, farmers working their horses, and proud owners of the first automobiles capture the hardworking people of this Vermont community living amid a beauty that tourists seek.

 Raunch-A-Rama

Raunch-A-Rama

$19.95

Today’s audiences have become very jaded with assembly line, mass-produced and mass-distributed hardcore pornography. In the United States alone there are over 11,000 adult movies released each year – more than 20 times the mainstream movie production. This is in addition to the estimated 420 million porn pages on the internet. Smut has become easily accessible and is more tolerated by our liberal society. But way before the plastic cartridges you popped in your VCR or those shiny discs you inserted into your DVD player, there was a market for prurient activities captured on film only whispered about amongst the closest circle of friends.Marketing and producing stag films was highly illegal and so these films were all shot in secrecy. They also were not distributed in the typical fashion. A traveling operator, who might conceal his wares in a doctor’s bag would bring his films and projector into town. He would typically organize a movie showing in the backroom or basement of an all-male social club or bar, where secrecy was assured. These vintage stag films or smokers as they were then called would be shown to an all-cash paying crowd, and immediately after the showing the operator would be on to another town. The operator and the audience could have gotten busted at any moment and even face jail time for such lascivious activities. It was the extreme illegality of stags that gave these films a certain excitement.Later, watching porn on a scratchy reel of 8mm film, projected onto a white sheet or a wall in a darkened room became the most profitable way of getting these films out to a wider audience. These movies were often advertised in the back pages of men’s magazines as art films. Possessing or selling these blue movies was still highly illegal and all the while the studios producing them, who most often were a one-man band, involved in every aspect of production and distribution, faced prosecution by the Feds on many charges.Raunch-A-Rama is

Dazzling and celebrity-filled, this survey of the life, times, and works of Seaman Schepps (18811972), one of New York’s greatest jewelers, is being published to accompany an important exhibition of his stunning designs. A true original, Schepps created eye-popping jewels that fused exotic materials with a sexy style and captured the imagination of trend-setting American women. An immigrant’s son from New York’s Lower East Side, Schepps rose to prominence by creating designs that defied all previous ideas of what jewelry should look like. Witty, even outrageous, and wildly flattering, Schepps’s jewelry stood for style more than wealth. Featured on the covers of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Look, and other magazines, it appealed to an enormous range of clients, from the duchess of Windsor to Andy Warhol. Today, more than 20 years after his death, his work has inspired a legion of new collectors, who seek out vintage rings, bracelets, earrings, compacts, and lipstick cases, and the firm continues to produce splendid pieces based on the original designs. This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, promise to bring Schepps’s extraordinary jewelry to a new generation.

Tawdry, titillating pictures from a sinful past–rare, vintage pinup and girly photos from the 1950′s and 1960′s, the golden age of girly photos. In this collection of 350 curvaceous kittens are dames, dancers, doxies, broads, floozies and would-be starlets from the 50′s. These Sex Cats were typified by Jayne Mansfield. Diana Dors and Mamie VanDoren and appeared in films like Baby Doll and Peeping Tom and magazines like Striparama, After Hours, Blast!, Spree, Taboo and Tom Kat. The awkward stare, ill-fitting lingerie and occasional bruise all provide testimony to the candid yet concupiscent nature of these seedy, yet provocative, pictures. These seductive images were fetish objects for the millions, and were discovered glued into albums or record sleeves, tied in stacks, in old cigar boxes, and hidden in books (notably: Dante’s Inferno).

 The Art of Lee Miller

The Art of Lee Miller

$60

This is the most scholarly, accessible, and exciting writing on Lee Miller to date. —Anthony Penrose, Lee Miller ArchivesLee Miller (1907–1977) was one of the most remarkable photographic artists of the 20th century. She created Surrealist-inspired photographs of haunting originality, portraits of genius, and daring war photographs. This unprecedented book brings together all of Miller’s major vintage prints for the first time, including sensational works never before published, rare and revealing drawings, selections from Miller’s writings as a war correspondent for Vogue magazine, and an extraordinary collage from 1937.Miller performed with unique success on both sides of the camera. A renowned beauty, she began her career being photographed as a fashion and fine art model by such luminaries as Arnold Genthe and Edward Steichen, stunning examples of which are included in this book. Miller moved to Paris in 1928, determined to take up photography; there she became the apprentice, collaborator, and muse of Man Ray. In the 1930s and ’40s, Miller shot remarkable portraits of such iconic figures as Marlene Dietrich, Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali. Turning her Surrealist eye to unexpected photographic subjects, she earned major commissions from American and European fashion magazines and also became a respected photo-journalist. Miller’s startling images of the Dachau concentration camp are among the most powerful records of the Holocaust.Published in conjunction with the centenary of Miller’s birth, this beautifully designed and produced book is an essential survey of this fascinating woman’s life and career.

Von Dutch

$194.14

10 x 10, 100 color photos, 200 b/w photos Von Dutch is one of the most interesting characters in hot rod and popular culture history. Considered the founder of modern pinstriping, he was a prominent character in many of the rodding magazines of the late ’50s, and his fame endured long after he apparently tired of it. Besides being a striper, he was a gifted artist, machinist, and gun-and knife-smith. Using stories and quotes culled from interviews, vintage photos, and images of the art and other works he left behind, this book chronicles Kenneth Howard’s life from pinstriping beatnik to bus-dwelling hermit. Where it can, this book sets the record straight on Von Dutch the man, but in many cases conflicting stories will serve to illustrate the contrary, colorful, and sometimes difficult nature of Von Dutch the legend. This book is a must-have for fans of hot rodding and hot rod culture!
