6 things you may not have known about Vampire Diaries
The Vampire Diaries first graced our screens over a year ago now and it seems to have gained a notable following since September 2010 when it originally premiered.
Getting off to a fairly shaky start with the critics, the reviews had improved dramatically by the end of the first season – the second series of Vampire Diaries kicked off with a pretty positive response from the critics too.
It’s an American horror TV drama, based on the series of supernatural horror novels with the same title and set in Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional town which is home to the three main Characters, Elena, a young human, and Stefan and Damon – both vampire brothers. The three of them become entangled in a bitter love triangle which urges Damon to create disorder and disruption around town and not to mention, plot vengeance on his younger brother, Stefan – all classic makings for the exciting twists and turns of an action-packed and emotional drama.
Warner Bros. TV is now hosting the series online in the UK and if you’re one of the millions of hooked followers, you might find this rather nifty list of interesting facts about the show useful:
- The show is filmed in Covington, Georgia, however the location for the pilot episode was Vancouver.
- Ian Somerhalder, who many will recognise from Lost, is the highest earning cast member, taking in $40,000 for each episode.
- The CW channel, which hosts the show in the USA, celebrated its biggest ever premiere on September 10 2009, thanks to The Vampire Diaries, with 4.9 million viewers tuning in, increasing to an official total of 5.7 million viewers with the addition of DVR numbers
- The Vampire Diaries was used in a Red Cross campaign designed to encourage youngsters to give blood. The slogan read: “Starve a Vampire. Donate blood”. The three main characters were featured in the campaign also.
- Nina Debrev, who plays Elena, along with three other cast members, was once arrested for disorderly conduct when they took part in a self-organised photo shoot one afternoon on a highway bridge, hanging over the highway and carrying out other stunts on the bridge.
- Kevin Williamson, one of the producers of the series, originally felt indifferent to the story and didn’t have much interest in it, however, after a bit of persuasion from co-developer Julie Plec, he began reading the novels and was captivated by the story.

#1′s: The Warner Brothers Years $11.99 There are a couple of statistics in the late Conway Twitty’s career that are rather astonishing: the first is that he scored 52 number one hits in the 30 years between 1958 and 1988. Just how astonishing can be illustrated this way: 52 number ones is more than the Beatles, more than Elvis Presley, and more than Frank Sinatra. The second — and what might appear minor in comparison but is actually more so — is that ten of them were between 1982 and 1988, near the end of his major-label recording career for Warner Bros. Twitty scored during every major change in the music, from honky tonk to countrypolitan to outlaw to urban cowboy to the dawn of the new traditionalist era. The true influence of Twitty has yet to be recognized, but he was a major player when country music was at its most invisible. In fact, it can be said that Conway was countrypolitan and made the whole mess cross over into the mainstream for the very first time. These ten tracks do not measure Twitty’s best work. But they do show he could sing any kind of song and put enough behind it to make it utterly believable. These ten tunes do contain a few real treasures, such as “I Don’t Know a Thing About Love (The Moon Song)” by Harlan Howard and the smash “Slow Hand” (that scored big for the Pointer Sisters in 1981, before Twitty cut it and remade it in his own image). Also here, from the Warner period, Twitty had the audacity to cut Amanda McBroom’s “The Rose,” a career-defining moment for Bette Midler as the title track for the 1979 film she starred in. The final number here, something written especially for Twitty, is “The Clown,” a ballad that showcases that rough but utterly tender baritone for all it’s worth. Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd $26.99 Though out of favor with many Abbott and Costello buffs, Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd is actually a lot of fun, so long as the viewer parks logic and dignity at the door. Captain Kidd is played by no less than Charles Laughton, who reportedly agreed to sign up for this film because he wanted to learn how to perform a comedy double-take. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello are cast as Rocky and Puddn’head, waiters at a pirate hangout on the island of Tortuga. Entrusted with a love letter written by the beautiful Lady Jane (Fran Warren) to cabaret singer Bruce Martingale (Bill Shirley), Puddn’head manages to get this missive mixed up with a treasure map coveted by both Captain Kidd and his rival, lady pirate Captain Bonney (Hillary Brooke). The upshot of all this finds Rocky, Pudd’nhead, Lady Jane and Bruce being shanghaied by Kidd, setting the stage for a climactic treasure hunt and chase on a faraway island. Laughton takes to broad slapstick comedy like a fish to water; indeed, at times he’s a lot funnier than Bud and Lou! Filmed in Cinecolor, Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd was the second of the team’s independent productions for Warner Bros. release; like the first, Jack and the Beanstalk, it was well received by the public, even while critics tore their hair and gnashed their teeth. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |
